Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: Asphalt Junkies Spring 2013 - Closed jpbis26 - 2013-04-20 10:30 AM Hi everyone, I know I haven't been posting in awhile. I do still read the thread and wish I could be more active on it...as you guys know, I've been trying to get back into training, but it's just seemed like an uphill battle. I let other things take priority and have a hard time advocating for my needs sometimes. The past year I have not been myself and things that used to be easy have become overwhelming. There has been many days where I just focus on getting through the day. I've been trying to pull myself out of it on my own for over a year. I know my life is good. My family is healthy, we have what we need. Events like Sandy Hook and the tragedy in Boston make me feel awful for complaining. And for the most part, I don't. I just hold it inside. But I'm sick of feeling so stressed out and overwhlemed when nothing is really wrong. I have a history of depression and anxiety in my family, so I finally made an appointment to go to my doctor (which I have been thinking about doing for months). He put me on some meds for depression and anxiety so we will see how it goes. We may have to play around with it before we find what gets me back to "normal". I'm feeling positive about it. The other day a cowork was being ridiculous and I was able to just ignore it and not care (truly-not faking it. normally these things eat away at me). Also (and this is the best) 2 days ago I threw a baseball to my 5 year old for like 45 mins and enjoyed playing with him. Normally, I would find excuses not to or force myself to do it and feel exhausted the whole time. So hopefully there will be more of this to come. Little victories are very important to celebrate! Do so as often as possible to keep your mind fresh about all of the things that are going well in your life. Having a positive perspective on life is one of the biggest keys to happiness but remember that there will always be some hardships that each and everyone of us have to work through. Last year was a breast cancer scare for Lis. I have had multiple surgeries on one knee. If you look at each persons life we all must have a little bit of rain falling but if you have a good foundation you there's always something that is brighter. Keep working through your doc. Find the right combination of meds and try to keep moving. Being fit, not necessarily an elite fitness, can produce a strong mental attitude and provide examples for just how strong you actually are. Don't get hung up on where you used to be. That may only serve to defeat you. Rather, look to where you desire to be. Set realistic, small goals and work upward from there. Regardless of where your athletic aspirations take you, whether high or low, you can always find support through me and others in this group. There are people who care about you as a person and desire to see you succeed in all your endeavors. Be patient and decisive and it'll come to you. |

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: Asphalt Junkies Spring 2013 - Closed KWDreamun - 2013-04-21 4:47 AM We went to see the movie "Homerun" last night, it was a very good movie. We are goig to early church today, then I'm going to run to the gym, work out there and run home. After lunch I need to go for a swim but that may be to optomistic and today at 5:00 pm we are going to finish the Boston for a person, gosh this town has rallied. They had to change the race location due to so many people coming to run. Hope ya'll have a GREAT day. As I read your post I was overcome with so many emotions of how I felt on Monday for everyone involved. The support of the running community has proven to be such a huge implement in warring against the aggression perpetrated last week. As Warren said: "if you're trying to break the human spirit, targeting marathon runners is not likely to be a successful target group." But this has become something the national running community has grabbed hold of and turned it into something much larger than distance athletes. It has become a national support group for runners, spectators, victims and every citizen of our nation. I and my family will be "running for Boston" today at a local event. I was planning to take 3-4 weeks away from running to allow my foot to heal after Boston but I cannot miss this event. There are so many people that aren't runners planning to be there and it will likely be pretty emotional for me. I'll let you all know how things turn out. I know that many of you have had your own "Run for Boston" events already and knowing you have been involved provides so much needed encouragement to me and others around me. If I run Boston again......when I run Boston again....I will likely have my own jersey made up again reading: "Defy Terror!" |

I'm even thinking about racing a sprint in May if it works out with my schedule. Better yet, I'm seriously looking at purchasing a new bike A cross bike this time so I could ride on trails and the road. Then I would sell my road bike. Just something I'm thinking about but if anyone has any input on cross bikes I'm all ears. The good news is I've been riding my tri bike more and I have not had anymore issues with my back flaring up. I've also been able to increase my swim distance to 3000 yards for my most recent workouts. Now I've just got to find a way to keep my feet happy so I can run again. This latest issue seems to be the start of extensor tendonitis. The nurse practitioner put me on an oral steroide right away because she knows how things flare up for me and then hang around for months. I stopped running again for a couple of weeks. As of today I got out of bed without pain but also took my last dose of the meds so I will wait a while longer to see how things go. Happy Sunday! You seriously cannot know how happy it makes me feel to hear that you are getting your mojo back!! Seriously!! You are such a motivator to me, and I guess I can only speak for myself, but it bothered me to know you were struggling. And when I saw you had posted, without even reading your post, I was elated to see your avatar. It had been so long since you had posted anything and it brought joy to see you here. I'm so glad you're back! |

Expert 1151 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: Asphalt Junkies Spring 2013 - Closed Thanks everyone for the kind words. I got back in the gym this weekend. Did the elliptical for 30 minutes Saturday and took a spin class today. It felt really good to break a sweat today and feel positive about my workout. I'm feeling alot less irritable and more relaxed. At first I thought the meds were making me drowsy, but now I think that maybe this is what it feels like to not have so much constant nervous energy/ anxiety because I find that I still am able to do things like exercise. There have been several situations this week that would have sent me into an internal rage before but that didn't really bother me. I took the kids swimming yesterday which was HUGE for me (I've dreading leaving the house lately). I had all the kids help me make breakfast today (which totally stressed me out before). Some might think these things are no big deal, everyday things, but I have felt unable to do them and enjoy them for a while, so they are big victories for me. |

I really would have liked to have done something like that but did not see anything organized here. I did get out there Tuesday for a long run which I dedicated to Boston, it's not much but it was the least that I could do. Today I'm taking the day off and being a total slacker. I worked overnight last night from 1 am to 6 am so not much sleep last night and today. Plus I have not had a day off in 3 weeks and have been putting up some really good training volume so I was due for a day off. So with the wife and girls out today I have my dog Luna for company and am planning on drinking some beer, eating crappy and doing alot of nothing and enjoying it. I am not going to feel one bit guilty about it either. |

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: Asphalt Junkies Spring 2013 - Closed Here are a couple of pics and a very brief video link for our tribute Run For Boston today. It was an incredible expression of unity under one flag and for one purpose. There were no political parties there. No specific races or ethnic groups. No fast runners or slow runners. We just were! We were there to provide our support for all that happened in Boston last Monday. I was moved incredibly by the outpouring the community placed before us. People were honking and waving. Shouting and screaming. I again felt like a weight was lifted from my shoulders.
Lisa, Kyrie, Tyler (Kyrie's boyfriend) and myself. Tyler and I planned to run together but as the next pic and the video indicate I ran with the flag of this Great Nation with the help of others who were there, running in Boston. I felt this to be a tremendous honor to carry the Stars and Stripes.

NH | Subject: RE: Asphalt Junkies Spring 2013 - Closed Dirk, so glad you were able to run for the cause this weekend. I was supposed to run the last 5 miles of the course Friday along with a huge group, some of whom were pulled from the course on Monday, but those plans were obviously cancelled. Because our family was away on a Down syndrome camp I was unable to do an official run, but I did my own dedicated run through some trails Saturday. It was very emotional for me on so many levels. Thanks to everyone who has played a part in honoring our city and those who are beginning the process of rebuilding their lives. The needs will be very high for a long time. Some of the runners and other active people where I work are organizing a blood donation awareness program as the Boston hospitals have said they are overwhelmed with donors now, but apparently the blood supply doesn't keep very long so they've told the public to come back over the next few weeks as the need will continue to be high for some time as so many recover. I can guarantee that next year's marathon will be an amazing event. |

Subject: RE: Asphalt Junkies Spring 2013 - Closed Had a fun ride tonight. It started off rough as I was chased by a hound dog right from the start. I mean not 2 min into the ride he comes out after me. I was not warmed up AT ALL and going straight into the wind. Talking nice did not keep him home, blasting my air horn - nothing. Finally I just forced the issue and hammered down as hard as I could - 19, 20, 21 mph and he was still hanging on. I didn't even know I could hit those speeds going into the wind. Amazing what a little fear and adrenaline can do! I just kept at it and eventually he gave up but that was a heck of a way to start the ride. It took a while after that to get control of my HR and shake off that feeling of fear with every oncoming house. But that was the only chase so the rest of the ride I was able to work hard and enjoy the quiet country roads. The ride ended really fun with the wind at my back for a long stretch where I worked my speed up to 24.5 mph . WHEEEE |

Karl, Pam, and I ran in a local 5.2 at 5:00 for Boston and I am sure that the gal that started the idea on Tuesday had no idea that over 1,000 runners would show up and that they would raise over $12,000. At least 3 Boston Marathnoers who were at Monday's race, came out to run as well. |

Hey that was a good warmup w/ the dog...now you know you can go out fast, nothing to hold you back now!!! lol Dirk, looking forward to seeing the pics when I get home, glad you could run and I LIKE the T-shirt idea! Matt, get used to the baseball... lol Jackie, glad things are getting better! OK this may be longer than ya'll want to read. Like Jen posted, we ran the last 5.2 miles for the Boston Marathon. When it was originally planned they were expecing 40 - 50 runners. They had to change the race location due to the number of participants. Over 1,000 signed up on facebook I was told and word of moth spread so I expect at least 1,500 showed up. This was a donation race and Jen said they raised $12,000, all of which went to Boston. here are a few of the details. Most people were wearing yellow and blue, We sang the national anthem as a group and I thought we were having a "fly-over" but it was a passenger jet taking off but the timing was PERFECT!!! I could see the tears in people's eyes, then they they took a moment of silence. The Sheriff's Dept. brought out some of their horses and had the deputies riding them. This was really awesome. When we started there were so many runners the streets could hardly hold them. They had some small flying saucers, hovering above the crowd with cameras taking pics, that was really neat! I talked to some people who could not run but they rode their bikes, they wanted to be part of the experience and help. There were a lot of people who do not run but walked it, for support and guess what, they may start running because of this! As people crossed the finish line, I could see tears. I saw one lady just completely break down, crying. I am so proud of our town. I also want to brag on Jen and her daughters, she ran it with a double wide stroller. Her children are beautiful, sweet and have great personalities! |

Yesterday was a threshold run. 2 mile warmup at 7:30 pace, did 5k in 20:30 for my workout, ran 3 back at about 8:00 pace. That 5k is a PR for me, the day after a bike race, in the afternoon after a swim workout. I am beyond ecstatic. If anyone is looking for a way to amp up their running I am now a full advocate of the BarryP Plan. Consistent milage at mostly easy pace has completely transformed my running. Now I'm starting to add the tempo and speedwork and its just the icing on the cake. |

Expert 1151 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: Asphalt Junkies Spring 2013 - Closed All good news to report today. 1. The past couple days I have felt great in the morning. Getting out of bed has been a lot easier. Maybe I actually could do a morning walk/run before work? 2. I was motivated to get a haircut, put on some make-up, and put in my contacts (still haven't got the LASIK yet). I hadn't realized how much I stopped caring about my appearance. 3. I was motivated to take a long walk with my dog and had to hold myself back from running. This is the biggest thing for me. For so long I had lost the desire to run for the sake of running, for the feeling I get when I run. So ready to start up C25K again and see it through this time. I hate to be too hopeful, but life seems to be getting managable again. 2 of my kids are home sick from school today with a stomach bug, so I'm going to have them take it easy and skip baseball tonight as well. Looks like I might be able to go to a 6:30 spin class instead |
