I was suppose to go out on my group ride this morning but I was just feeling a little off and my legs felt really tires so I skipped it today. I'll still get something done today at the gym. It is suppose to be 115 degrees here today so Summer hasn't left yet. Maybe in a few weeks the heat will start to break some.

I got in 80 plus miles of hills and heat!!  Half with the bike shop group the rest with a friend.  I need some pool time today if I can and then tomorrow is a 15 mile run.

Have a great long weekend everyone!

PennState - 2010-09-04 10:09 AM Any training this weekend?

I was traveling for work last week and now I'm in San Diego for the weekend staying with my parents and attending a high school friend's wedding tonight. Yesterday I got in my 8 mile run - the first 5 miles were around a lake near my parents house with the temps reaching almost 100 degrees. I was melting so I decided to do the final 3 miles at the beach on the hard packed sand where it was much cooler. Tough run but I'm feeling good about my training. I have my first meeting with my new coach on Monday evening to talk about marathon training.

Nice job with the run! I hope the coach works out the way you want.

I am in San Diego for the night, using up some frequent visitor points to get some beach time! Planning a run in the morning around Mission Bay!

Nice weekend of training!  Looks like your starting to build up the volume/distance.

PennState - 2010-09-06 7:05 AM 10 mile run became a 12 miler somehow. Not real fast, but was running with a friend.

Any holiday training for you folks?

I'm not sure how many people would refer to a 12miler at 8:21 pace as simply 'not real fast'.  I'm guessing 90% of people who have run a half marathons would love to do that during their race, let alone during a training run.  It's a solid run, you're just being humble ;-)

Wanted to share this image from the trail head from the run I did this morning.  I guess sometimes twisting an ankle or stubbing a toe on a rock is the least of your worries on the trail.  This takes the normal sign of 'Do not feed or pet the wildlife' to a whole new level.

thanks Pete!

Who goes the training?

The running is going great and really is the sport I love the most.  So unfortunately balancing the 3 isn't going to well.  Luckily I've found that because of the type of running I've been doing (straight uphill) it's translated well into power on the bike.  Hopefully the long distances I've been running (that also include a lot of hills) will retain my endurance on the bike a bit too.

I find that as I approach my big races each year, I begin to have the attitude of 'the hay is in the barn' for this race and I start focusing on the next one a little too soon.  Since my races following IMAZ are ultra marathons I've started to refocus on running a little too soon. I guess it's a mental thing I have to resolve. But I still have a nearly 3 months to kick it in an get on the bike and in the pool a lot more.

After building some pretty good volume the last 3 or 4 weeks I was sure glad to see a recovery week planned for this week!  Plus it gives me a little mini taper form my HM Sunday.  Still trying to figure out whether to race the half or just use it as a supported training run.  It all will depend on how the legs feel the end of the week.

Train well folks!

I'm not sure what your training plan calls for the week after the HM, but looking at the fact you have like 7 or 8 weeks until Florida... if your training plan calls for a hard weekend of training and a few easy days following the weekend, I'd personally end up racing the HM.  But if your plan calls for some pretty consistent higher volume for the following week I'd likely throttle myself back so it didn't effect what I was capable of doing that week so it didn't effect the IM training.

Just my thoughts. Personally I see the majority of my races as hard training days, since I'm able to push myself harder mentally in a race than I can on just a normal day of training.  So with that, I build my races into my overall training schedule and will anticipate easier days following a race that fits with my larger goals.

Good points and I could get away with hard run looking at what is coming up.  I do like to do the races harder, even if there isn't a goal involved just like you mentioned, mentally it is easier on race day.  Plus doing most of my run training at an easy pace, it is nice to see the results of the work now and then.  But, I am still going to ride and swim on Saturday so I'll have to see how it goes.

PennState - 2010-09-07 5:44 PM Hey, anyone ever gotten into riding cross-bikes?
I am about to buy one and was wondering if anyone had any experience here?

I haven't personally, but I have a number of friends that have.  I can definitely see how it'll improve your mounting and dismounting of the bike in triathlons though ;-) Beyond that, all I know is that it's typically described as the combination of the hardest aspects of mountain biking mixed with the hardest aspect of road cycling.  Good luck to you, it's definitely a workout.

Beyond that, all I know is that the deep dish wheels will help you out drastically with cutting through the mud and preventing as much suction action on the wheel slowing you down (or something like that) and that cantilever brakes are used instead of newer shimano road brakes since they shed mud much easier.  Do they use discs in cross on the higher end stuff?
