Anyone have any recommendations for a bento box for the bike? Really much difference and just find the best price?

Wow, you guys rock.  Everyone has been putting in some killer workouts.  I love this competition and race season hasn't even started.  Ok, it hasn't started up here yet.  I see some of you have races this month.  Good luck!

Bento Boxes.  I am assuming you mean the bag that goes either on your handlebars or the front of your frame.  I haven't had a need for one since I have only done sprints and usually tape GU on to my frame.  I can see the need for one in a longer race but not sure if I would go with one.  I carry gu in my pockets.  All my race tools are under my seat.

Yep, thats a bento box.  Looking at one on top tube behind handlebars.  Until now I also have been taping my gu's to the top bar and snack bars in my shirt pocket.  But for a HIM and ~3 hrs on the bike that is a lot of tape.  I have an under seat for my tools/tubes, etc.

Gary, I have a "bento box" not sure the brand... mine has velcro straps that strap to the top tube and to the stem, it's nice, I put all kinds of stuff in there when I ride.... my cell phone, key to my car, as well as some sports beans or snack bars, etc. I also keep nuun tablets, chamois butter... I like being able to get to those things easily. It's too small for gloves or arm/leg warmers... I keep those in my jersey pockets if I need to shed them.

Question:  For those who live where it rains - I have a Saturday ride planned, and it may rain - we were told to bring somewater proof clothing... what exactly do you wear on a bike ride in the rain? Do you even ride in the rain? Is it safe? What about your bike, doesn't it get real dirty? Not liking this idea at all!  (Theres a reason I live in the desert

Hi everyone. Dropping in for a quick hello. It's also kind of a goodbye.

Haven't spoken to most of you since the Haiti earthquake. DH was having a hard time. Part of his family is there and we have several friends working there as missionaries. One of DH's cousins and an aunt died. His aunt's remains were recovered but his cousin is among the thousands in a mass grave somewhere. Our friends who survived told us harrowing accounts of what they experienced and witnessed. Talking about or even thinking about tri training didn't feel appropriate at the time. Things are still sad but calmer now. DH has gone back to work and we are getting back to a routine.

I went for my first run this morning. 5 miles. So training has begun again.

This is a goodbye because the tri club I joined has so many activities, meetings, training events and activities that it is taking care of my support and training needs. The club has 8 tri coaches working with us in groups of 5-10 people each depending on our level and goals. From beginners to advanced, sprint to full ironman. They also have swim instructors and I signed up for the stroke mechanics group. It's a small group (3-4 swimmers per instructor) that meets weekly to work on stroke technique, swim efficiency, etc. I'm also working with a cycling coach and a sports nutritionist.

We train together and will be supporting each other at races. Additionally they have an online forum like this where we log workouts, ask questions, share tips, give support, meet up for a run or ride, etc.

I know I won't be able to do both, so instead of just fading away, I wanted to stop in and say thank you for getting me this far. Thanks for all your encouragement Bryan. Thanks for searching me out and inviting me to join this group.

Diane and Gary we've known each other for a long time. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for everything. Diane, I hope your shins fully heal so you can do everything you want to do. In the meantime, all the best at your upcoming century ride.

Gary, you'll ace your HIM. I have no doubt about that.  Penguins and Turtles alike will be cheering for you.

To all the new Turtles, you have a great group.

Take care everyone.

WAEF - so sorry to read that your family has been impacted by the devastation in Haiti. There is a very significanty Haitian diaspora here in Canada. We have had both troops and police there under the auspices of the UN for a number of years and a close friend of mine is a physician with "Helping Hands For Haiti" She now has 2 adopted sons from Haiti and spends a lot of time working at a clinic there.

Sorry too that you are taking your leave of our little group but great to know that you have a great support team taking our place. All the best!

WAEF - Sorry to hear about the family loses.  Good luck on the Tri training!

Diane - I usually avoid riding in the rain but have done it.  When I used to ride a motorcycle on the road I always avoided the first rain (So. Calif) as it raised all of the oils, dirt, etc from the road.  Past that just give yourself extra braking times.  Lightly tapping the brakes a couple of times will dry them off.  I don't have great rain gear so I just assume I am going to get soaked but if the temps are warm it should not be too bad.  Make sure to wear glasses to protect your eyes.  Have a towel and a change of clothes ready when you get back.  Bike will need a complete bath afterwards.  Hopefully the more rain experienced folks can help out.

Another question for all of you.  Anyone have experience with Mavic chains/cassettes?  Bonktown keeps running a sale on a chain/cassette combo (9 speed/shimano compatible) for $89.  Probably more than getting a 105 cassette/chain but I have heard good things about the Mavic stuff.  Based upon mileage I am getting close to needing a new chain (need to go get the tool to check it).

WAEF, sorry about the ties to Haiti,  It has impacted the entire world.  Will remember you and them in my prayers.  Good luck on your training.

Gary, yet another question for you, what do you use to clean you bike, and what is the best method.  Also, what is the correct means for relubrication following a good cleaning?

I told you I was simple and needed a lot of help.

Billy, I don't think you have come close to the number of questions that I have asked so no worries.  Even after all those questions LRR and Mav are still sane,,,,,well, um may be a bad example there!

On the BT site there is a great video on cleaning/lubricating chain, etc  Definitely worth a look.  I bought chain cleaner and lubricant recommended by my LBS.  I usually take the chain off and clean it separately.  I use mild soap and water on the frame, etc.  Don't know the brands of chain cleaner or lube but will post them later.  Interested to hear what others use.

Gary - I really liked the name you picked that was the length of the dictionary.....

Wetsuits - 78 degrees and under - wetsuit legal.  78-83 or so....you can wear it but no one does...or almost no one....above 84 they don't allow them because you can actually come out of the water pretty dehydrated.  I wore one in a race that was 78 degrees and also boiled....and it was sleeveless.  Xterra has a sleeveless for $99 right now for the next three or four days.  Fitting is SNUG....like a sausage casing.  Here's my advice - if it is legal 78 or below - always wear it.  If above 78 then I would not wear it.  The awards are not a big deal for me but you just won't need it.  Buoyancy is nice but not to burn up.  IMLOU is not wetsuit legal.  You can wear a speedsuit but not a wetsuit.  A speedsuit really has very little buoyancy and is CRAZY pricey...think Michael Phelps Olympics.  Prior to my first HIM, I swam an Olympic distance with no wetsuit to be sure that I could OWS a mile.  That boosted the confidence factor big time.  The HIM was wetsuit legal after all and I bobbed like a cork.  You will need to swim at LOU the full 2.4 with no suit.  I think they are specifically prohibited...I don't know if NA Sports cares if you wear them if you are not looking at awards or not.  I would email them the question off the race website.  Full vs sleeveless - I have both.  I don't notice much difference in buoyancy or temperature BUT they say that you are faster with a full because of the additional hydrodynamic shape with the arms covered. Rocket Science Sports has a video on YouTube showing how best to put on a wetsuit.  I recommend watching it and not only because the model is a beautiful young lady although that is an added benefit.

The Challenge - it is 2 weeks.  Then we may start Challenge 2 for the 2nd two weeks.  We will tweak what we need to at that time.  PLEASE DON'T OVERDO IT ON THIS SILLY THING (first that will help our team win and second no one will get hurt).  Do not add more than 10% in duration or mileage in a week.  Keep to the volumes and have some fun.  I do however love the smack talk.....

John - Passing On Your Left is just too long....we pass much quicker than that....how about shortening to On Your Left.....that is what I say to those I am fortunate enough to pass....there aren't many of them.....LOL.

What a great group you ALL are....I am still travelling a lot right now so sorry I haven't been here much....I will try to post more.  I am trying to figure out how to post from my phone.  Does anyone know how to post on an Iphone?

John - I will get you my volumes for the week by PM.  There are certain Mavs - I mean people lurking around my BT stuff.....and I don't log here anyway -- I use WKO+ from Training Peaks to sync my Garmin and my PowerMeter.

A good refresher above on NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY.  For you new folks, always try out equipment, food, techniques, etc prior to race day.  That is NOT the date to find our that your tri top actually absorbs water weighting you down or the pockets catch the water and cause extra friction (this happened with my first tri top).  And it is certainly not the day to try a flying mount or dismount.....

Billy - simple green diluted with water to wash the bike....keep the simple green less diluted for the chain....a chain cleaner works greats.  The lube the chain, leave overnight and then wipe off the excess the next morning.

One other thought, don't air your tires the night before a race....as it warms the next morning you can hear tubes pop.....there is nothing more disconcerting on race morning to hear than a POP....POP....POP....and then see some very disappointed cyclists....in cooler climates I wouldn't worry as much but here where it is hot....well, let's just say it happens....

Gary - I have a fuel belt bento box...it is a little longer and not quite as tall as some of them. It also has a plastic insert that you can keep in it for harder sides of take it out for a more free form bento box

Diane - layers for the temps as appropriate with the final layer being waterproof (breathable if possible).  also you can consider putting your feet in plastic bags or grocery bags - plastic - to keep some of the water off your feet.  Be sure you take dry socks to change into....you might also consider a pair in a ziploc bag in your jersey - if it quits raining you can change sox and your tootsies will be happier....IMHO.  Dry clothes after are a must.  I have also seen people wear a swimcap under their helmet to keep their hair dry / head warmer....I haven't tried this so I won't opine on the merits of that outfit.

I post from my iPhone. About 25% of the time I can't get the keyboard to come up. I think waiting for the page to load before touching the text box seems to help. And, I can't keep the paragraph breaks, so let me know if you figure it out

Thanks for the advice in riding in the rain - I don't think I own a water-proof - anything  LOL... it doesn't rain much where I live. I like the idea of a swim cap under the helmet... I'll be riding from home to the ride then home again, so no need to bring dry clothes for the car ride, but a pair of extra socks for when the weather clears might be the trick - we're only going 11 miles, so it won't be a super long ride.

Bryan - how much water in the simple green?  Also, how often do you lube your chain? doesn't that require taking the chain off the bike - YIKES!

"On Your Left" works for me.  Or OYL if we really want to shorten up the name.

Just let me know before the weekend so I don't violate your rule of posting totals at least once a week.  See, I was listening.  And they say I don't listen to people.

Diane, be very careful riding on the white/yellow painted lines on the road. When these get wet they are very slippery. DONT brake if you have to ride on them. Good sunglasses  that wont fog when wet, are a must. I dont know what your temps are, but gloves with fingers so your hands dont freeze. I try hard not to ride in the rain...but you cant pick your weather on race day!!!

Bento boxes are a must for longer races. I have two. Both attach to the top tube with velcro. Tri sports makes them and they are cheap $10-12. One of mine has the plastic insert which is great if your gels "leak" and it closes with a zipper. The other one has a mesh top that secures with velcro. I use the mesh top one for races as I can see what I need and its easier to open. The zipper one I use for training, when I carry my phone and my wallet.

If you dont have one I would suggest getting a Road ID. This is a strap of neoprene that goes around your ankle. It has a metal plate that has your personal info on it/name/phone/contact. There are road IDs that you can put your medical info in the computer and there is a website and code emergency personel can go to in case you cannot give your info. Many times we ride alone. Even when you ride in groups chances are the people you are with know your name and maybe your phone number. My husband bought me mine after I crashed...I really wish I had one the day I went down.

Yesterday I swam 3000. OYL...the only peole you will be passing are eachother!!!LOL

Oh Man, I have to agree with Mav on the road ID tag.  I don't leave home without it.  I run with the same people every week but if I went down, they would have a hard time contacting anyone since all my phone contact information is stored in their cell phones and we hardly ever run with our cell phones.  If someone has issues, it's usually when you are the farthest away from your house or vehicle.

And you may have me on the swim, but I will be passing on your left in the run.  Here me coming yet?
