Kelly has recommended a rudy project. Was wondering what the rest of the group uses and what you would recommend. Any advice is appreciated. Go try some on. The Giro Selector was too small for my dome (even the L) and the Rudy was borderline too small too. I like my Bell Javelin a lot. I was checking those out online. Does it come with the shield? Do you use one? If so how does it workout for you? Comes with shield. I use it, but it's detachable so if you don't like it no biggie. I like the helmet a lot. It totally cuts out any wind noise you'd hear with a road helmet, so it's really quiet in there. Kind of nice really. My only wish is that there was a tinted visor for sunny days. I thought some of them had tinted lenses by the pictures. Maybe you can buy just the lens and swap them in and out. I like the idea of quiet. I ride near a lot of beaches and on windy days it can be so loud. Please tell me you don't plan on using an aero helmet as training helmet. |

Foeget HR zones, heck, I'm lucky if I can pace myself for the distance to finish. The HM last Sunday was 90 minutes at an ave HR of 166bpm, and my legs (3 days later) still feel the effects(affects) That's why I don't do "training races". I was relieved when I couldn't do the HM I had run the two previous years so I could just keep training for my A races. I knew I wasn't going to race it for training and was going to go as hard as I could and it would have blown up my next week. This is a lesson it takes lots of athlets way too long to learn. You need to remember what's important. If running 52 HMs in a year is important, by all means, run a HM every weekend. If suceeding at an "A" race is important, sometimes you need to sacrifice other things. This is kinda where I'm heading. I'd much rather just do the big A race and pass on all the little guys. I'm dealing with what Todd is dealing with - DOMS - and now I most likely won't be able to do my run repeats tomorrow due to the muscle soreness. Now I'm thinking my HM should have been just another training run even though it came after a recovery week, and then I'd be refreshed going into this new block instead of feeling like an enormous disaster area. LOL Yeah... for what it is worth I decided to do NO other races when I did the IM. I am injury prone though. boy was I praying daily to the stay-injury-free-gods. |

LOL. I'm not sure why I wouldn't so if you could expand on why not........ Couple of reasons: 1. Aero helmets are large and cumbersome, restrict your perepheral vision as they wrap around the side of your head and are difficult to wear when not in the aero position. Using it for everyday riding where there are stops, turns, other riders and motorists and a decent amount of time not in the aero bars is both uncomfortable and dangerous. Notice even in pro bike racing, the riders only wear aero helmets in TTs, they never wear them in road stages. 2. Aero helmets are expensive. If you crash once and hit the helmet its done. Its kind of like race wheels, they're expensive so you don't use them on a day-to-day basis so they don't get beaten up and destroyed. 3. Aero helmets are hot. Even the best aero helmets don't have the venting of a road helmet and its fairly easy to get over heated. 4. Turning your head in an aero helmet can create instability (aero helmets are aero when facing forward but if you turn your head, you create a sail). Not safe for road riding. 5. Most importantly you'll look like a total tool.

Well reasoned post, but this is really the only pertinent reason. It's just one of those race day only types of things. You would get mocked, and mocked mercilessly by most I know if you were caught training in an aero helmet. |

Pro 4723 CyFair | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED Some of the locals in the rural areas don't like cyclists on their roads. They've become more and more organized and really want Ironman and cyclists in general to leave their community. I've seen a ton of db cyclist activity out there so they're justified to a point, but I've seen the same attitude from motorists too so it goes both ways. |

Having raced in a few aero helemets, the Rudy Wingspan is my favroite because its the lightest and the coolest. You'll notice that in Kona many of the pros do not wear aero helemts because its more important to try to stay cool than to get aero beenfits from the helmet. |

I was under the impression that I could save calories and eat more later in the day in the form of mini meals. I have been following the fueling protocol you outlined for me, and it's helping (I'm not talking strictly about weight loss but energy, recovery, etc.). I'm going to fuel up for my long ride tomorrow, and I'm really interested to see how it helps with my performance. |
