Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just checking in to report I'm still alive and have managed to run two days in a row. This summer has been pretty chaotic so I'm actually looking forward to the semester starting this Thursday so I can get back to a regular routine. It's good to see everyone is still going strong! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Swam in an angry lake Michigan yesterday. Large waves and a nice rip current. Amazing how much faster I could swim away from the shore given the waves and how much harder it was swimming back. Nice swimming in open water again. After my swim the best part was bodysurfing for the next hour. The lake was around 74 degrees (barry, jim and scott - unbelievable, huh?). I hope to finally try out my wetsuit today. Also need to get my run in.

Also need to get my run in. The water temps have been unbelievable this year. Tawas Bay was 77 on Satuday, and the temp hit 70 at my house. In 13 years we have been in this house the water has never gotten over 65. August is a Blast on the Great Lakes, if you like to play in the surf! |

I did my HIM in 78 degrees with a full and it was fine, but I got it off right away. But it seemed borderline to me. If the water had been much warmer, I wouldn't have worn it, not because I expected to medal, but because I would have been worried about overheating. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Barry:Besides the heat issue, if the water temp is above USAT standard 78 and below 83, you will be relegated to the last heat of the day. If it is warm weather, the extra heat during the bike and roft at substantially diminish the benefits of the faster swim time. I am not at risk for podiuming either, but I like to see how I do in my AG. If you go with the wetsuit, your results will not be posted in your AG, but, rather, in a separate wetsuit division. |

I had no idea. All of my previous races have been wetsuit legal (some barely and by very "strategic" choices of where to measure, I suspect) so I never got to experience what they do if they actually measure a temp between 78 and 83. Thanks. |

Thanks Chris & Joe. Joe, I didn't know that either. Even though my swim is improving, I'm by no means a strong swimmer and doing 1500 in open water without the wetsuit is going to be a test for me but I'm sure I can. It'll just be a matter of how much energy I use. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WTC races where the wetsuit is optional (i.e: Ironman Texas both years) clearly state that you will get a medal, a finisher's certificate and official results but you will not be eligible for prizes, Kona slots or even appear in the rankings. Not a good option from my POV. Some races like Buffalo Springs purposedly take their temp measurements near the spring outlet so it's lower, therefore they make it wetsuit legal but then you bake in reality. I suspect they try to make races wetsuit legal because of the astonoshing numbers of swim related deaths during the last few years. NYC Nautica Triathlon had two people die during the swim in the same year and one the year before. I think the Hudson may have something to do with it. Some have gone as far as to suggest that races should require a certificate of completion of an Open Water Swim Clinic for newbies, not a bad idea... |
![]() ![]() |
![]() | ![]() From what I've read, these swim deaths almost always occur at the very beginning of the race, like the first 300 yards. The growing consensus is that they are probably due to panic attacks, which might actually be made worse by wetsuits (since they feel like they are chocking you sometimes, especially for people not used to wearing them.) Panic attacks most often happen to people who were nervous about the swim to start with, but have also been known to happen to experienced and confident swimmers. The article I read counseled that if you feel yourself starting to get nervous, just flip to your back and float. Don't worry about the time. Just float. You won't sink and you can either let it pass and go on or flag down a boat. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got in my run as per my training plan, still on track and feeling really good. Looking forward to my next day without any bike or run though, my legs are getting tired. No aches and pains though, just the expected stiffness and tired muscles, so I'm happy with that.
