rizer22 - 2011-07-25 11:27 AM Kelly, congrats on an awesome finish. You deserved that PR and sounds like you had a great experience. You've inspired all of us more than you know. At least me anyway. Whether it be a sprint or an ironman, you've never made anyone feel inferior to your training volume. I appreciate that and I am sure others do as well. I have otherthings that motivate me but there's no doubt knowing I have to post my workouts for you to see is motivating in itself. Thank you for all your time. It was great to see all of your hard work pay off with a PR. Running a marathon itself is a huge task nevermind a 2.4 mile swim and 112 bike prior, both at respectable speeds. Great job. Up next for Ironman, I believe, is Karen. Yes we will be watching on Ironmanlive.com as well. It was cool to get those updates at a birthday party, on the phone.

I agree with everything Jeff said.  This group has been great!!!

I did a smallish local sprint yesterday.  The company is slow to post the splits, but my time was 1:18.  I was really strong in the swim (most likely 1st age group) and strong on the bike, but I suffered a bit on the run.  2nd place and 3rd place women in my age group passed me in the last .5 mile.  Bah!!!!

It was HOT - 95 without heat index.  I had some serious GI issues going on and started the swim dehydrated.  I'm still not feeling quite right.  What do you all do when you're dealing with GI/stomach/dehydration problems during race weekend (this started on Saturday morning)?

I'll post my splits when I have them.  I had tons of family at the race cheering me on, so that made it the most fun ever

You'll get them next time!

I'm curious about the answer to this questions as well.  And more specifically, what do you do if you go into a race feeling fine, but start having upset stomach on the bike and/or run?  How do you correct the situation?  Endurolytes?  Stop eating/drinking to let the stomach empty?  Slow down?

First Q: drink a coke, take some tums and suck it up best you can.  I once played a football game with a 102 fever and occassional puking.  Not fun, but i actually had a good game.  Clearly it didnt effect you too much if you finished in 2nd place.

Second Q: there is not much you can do.  if you feel crappy eating/drinking/medicine wont do much.  if you are sick you have to decide whether you can push through or DNF if you are worried about injury.  If you are in a longer race and cannot stay hydrated you have to stop or you can get hurt.  particualrly if it is hot and humid.  No way you can do anything longer than about an hour or 2 without hydration in blazing heat like last week.

No, it didn't affect me too much until the run (and I got 4th...not 2nd ).  I almost had to stop and vomit, that's how dehydrated I was yesterday.  I'm still having problems today, so obviously I have a stomach bug.  Is it a bad idea to take Immodium before a race?

Immodium will pull water out of your intestines.  For a 1-2 hour race youa re probably okay.  I am not sure i would recommend it for something longer.  However, you ahve to do what you have to do to get through race day.  Someone else may understand the interplay on hydration better than i.  My general rule of thumb: anything less than 2 hours i'll make it through even if i am in a lot of pain or miserable, above that be careful.

Feel better Jen.  I felt like total crap this weekend.  fortunately i didnt have a race so i vegetated.

I believe Pepto is the way to go Jen.  Sorry.  Doesn't dehydrate you from what I've read in the past.  The fact it is designed to work on people who have multiple symptoms (the runs, vomiting, etc) that lead to dehydration it works via pathways that leave the water in your system.

So is that what happened with your bike splits then?   A guy in our tri group had almost the same splits as you (you beat him by 5 minutes!) and was wondering the cause (if other than fatigue) caused the 19 mph, to go to 16 mph, then 13 mph by the end???  Does the course get alot harder?

My race Sunday is cancelled.

I knew it was coming, but it still sucks. The largest fire NM has ever had is barely 2 miles north of there (and still going in some spots). They have been staging the fire fighters (over 1,000) in the camp grounds, the lake is being used to fill the helo's for fire fighter, and there's word that it might be contaminated with ash fallout.

That's a bummer.  I know how you feel.  I was all trained for the Santa Clarita Marathon a few years ago but the fires in So Cal were so bad, air quality was awful.  You could see the ash floating all over, grey skies (more than usual), and fires still burning.  They canceled the race and I was so upset.  Months and months of training (probably the best running condition I have ever been in) and my dreams squashed.  But, it made no sense to risk people's health, so in the end I understood.

Is there another race you can do in a few weeks to substitute?

thanks, yeah there's one in September (another oly). I was wanting to use this as a gauge to how I do at the distance before signing up. The September one is a TOUGH course, very hilly and hot. I might still sign up for it, though.

First split was taken at the bottom of the hills (at 28 miles), second split was a full loop of the course (56 miles from mid point in the first loop to mid point in the second loop) and third split was taken from mid point in the second loop to the end (the majority of the climbing and 28 miles).  So if you average splits 1 and 3 they should be close to split two.

Here's the course profile.  The splits were taken at miles 28, 74 and 112:

You can see why the first split is "fast" and the third split "slow"

@ Jen -- two questions:

(1) What did you eat the day before the race; and

(2) What did you drink on the bike?

The day before the race I had waffles for breakfast, turkey sandwich and yogurt for lunch, banana and pretzels for snack, and pasta with sausage for dinner (I wouldn't have had the pasta dish the night before a race if we hadn't had the birthday party for my son....it was pizza or pasta).  I spent a lot of the morning before the race on the toilet, and it persisted into the rest of the day and race morning.  Honestly, I still feel awful.  I spiked a fever yesterday and spent more time on the toilet.  It feels like I have a parasite or something.

I drank Gatorade on the bike.  I know you don't need the calories, but since it was going to be really hot and I sweat like a pig, I loaded my water bottle with the real deal.  I drank the entire thing while on the bike.

I'm embarrassed to say that I drank some lake water before the race started.  Yes, I'm serious.  My mouth was sticky and dry and my throat hurt.  I drank a few handfuls.  My mother said I probably consumed lots of delicious microorganisms.  My sister added that my microorganism cocktail probably had a dash of boat fuel in it too.  LOL  We've all the seen the videos of dead fish floating in Lake Erie.  Yummy.  Desperate times call for desperate measures.  Now I'm really feeling like I might have a parasite in my body.

Sausage. Big mistake. And waffles for breakfast the day before a race also not a great choice. Did you have syrup on those? Turkey sandwich, was it deli meat? Is this what you normally eat? All of these are things I would avoid pre-race, this looks like what you should have post race instead, to be honest. Waffles and pancackes are not a pre-race breakfast, they should be considered a treat post race as thye have little nutritional value. I'm a little late to this discussion, but I have noticed some odd pre-race meal choices in this thread.

Yes, I always have waffles the day before a race (with syrup).  I eat oats, almonds, raisins, and almond milk on a day-to-day basis, but the waffles don't usually send me to the bathroom as much as the oats do.

I had 5 houseguests in for the weekend, and I had a huge birthday party at my house the night before the race.  It wasn't my "normal."  The sandwich was a quick grab, and the pasta was what was available.  I even had a piece of cake and ice cream (also not my normal).  My baby turned 3 and my husband turned 40.  Life gets in the way sometimes.

I have to cut most veggies out the day before the race or I will seriously poop my pants while I'm racing.  Not to be gross, but I eat a mostly vegetarian diet with tons of veggies, fruits, and fiber.  I'm normally in the bathroom at least 5 times a day. I really have to work to eliminate that on race weekend.  I was probably in the bathroom at least 50 times over the course of Saturday and Sunday.

Kudos to you for even racing, really! I'm not sure I could have.

It sounds to me like you got a stomach bug more than anything. Could easily be the cause, since you say you had a bunch of house guests and likely lots of little kids for your little one's bday party.

Yes it does and that along with pre-race anxiety and different foods can create GI distress. I would suggest that you really don't need to look much further then that for a cause to what ailed you. Just because you have tolerated certain things in the past doesn't mean that will always be the case. As your options were so limited, you did the best you could.

What does a typical pre-race day of eating look like for you?  I'm genuinely curious.  I hate cutting out all of the things that are so good for me, but I really do worry about having a problem during the race, so I tend to eliminate most fiber.

I pretty much cut all fat and most protein the day before a race.  For me its easily digetible carbs and a little protein.  biggest meal of the day is breakfast and dinner is very small (usually 1 cup of pasta with no sauce and a half of chicken breast).  Lots and lots of fluids the day before as well.

You don't eat much meat and that coupled with the fat in sausage was probably a deal killer.

With regard to the bike, if it was super hot you probably needed more fluids and electrolytes.   In 95 degree heat your sweat rate can be super high.

What does a typical pre-race day of eating look like for you?  I'm genuinely curious.  I hate cutting out all of the things that are so good for me, but I really do worry about having a problem during the race, so I tend to eliminate most fiber.

Same as any other day just less. I usually begin to lower both daily calories in the days preceeding a race as I taper. I stay very hyrdrated drinking water, not sport drinks. I add a little more sodium to my food. But otherwise, it's the same combination of whole foods I always have. The day before Vineman I had some greek yougurt with a banana cut up in it after a short bike/run, around noon I had some eggs in a wrap, plain (my Aunt and Uncle wanted to stop at this Mexican place and I wasn't about to touch that crap), and for dinner i had some griled chicken, sweet potatoe, and some steamed brocolli. In general, I wouldn't have had the eggs, not that there's anything wrong with them, but I did just want something mild. To be honest, I have an iron gut but if I had what you had I'm not sure how I would have felt. Between the simple sugar in syrup, ice cream, and cake and the salty deli meat and suasage I would have certainly felt off.

In general, to everyone, you really just need to reduce calories a bit and if fiber is an issue, reduce it as well but never elimiating what you normally eat and replace it with things you don't. It really isn't as hard as we make it sometimes.
