What's happenin today?

well aside from my stomach being a mess from some frozen trader joe's eggplant parm last night, i had a nice little run between bathroom breaks at the gym this morning.  oops, tmi???

have a great morning everyone, it is raining buckets here today.

saw madison, WI on CNN at the gym but could not read the closed caption, what's up there at the capital, Wisconsin peeps?

Remember I live in the land of Libs.  The brand new Gov is conservative and he is ruffling feathers with his budget cuts and a stance on collective bargaining for State employees.  I don't disagree with what he wants, but I think he made an error in his delivery.  Shoving massive change down the throats of the unwilling is not a great way to kick off his tenure.  Schools have been closed for two days (teachers walked out) and protesting has been going on for several more days....not a lot of maturity.

The worst part is with the schools closed 6 guys from the Verona swim team showed up at the pool when I was there.  Holy crap, water everywhere, speedos, it was very distracting

Yuck, hammies kill when you pull them.  Hate it.  Best advice I have is to rest it as much as you can this week.  With 5 weeks to go, you should be okay by then if you give it some time to recover!  Good luck!

How bad is the hamstring? does it hurt when walking or only with activity?   I just resolved a pulled hamstring and it wasn't even remotely ready to be run on after 5 weeks, let alone with any intensity.  My pull was bad....and was on the medial side. Hamstrings are pesky even after healing so please evaluate before you start back at it.

It is up high and towards the inside (not really the groin).  Almost where my leg goes into the joint of my hip.  I can see what looks like a scar.  Does not hurt all the time, only when I run and my left leg makes contact with the ground.

Woo Hoo!

I ran outside today in shorts and a short sleeve shirt!

Also, yes I used COJ as a news source, Since a few of you live in WI, and I saw a post about impeaching the Governor I read the thread.

Lucky you...the good news is here the snow is melting at a rapid rate.  For February, that is a very good thing.  I just hope to heck it doesn't come back to bite us in March!

Impeach is thrown around all the time by people that don't have a frickin' clue what it takes to do it and what the basis for doing it would be.....I just shake my head.

Snow? What snow?

We don't get any of that here...*snickers*

Yesterday we had furious gale force winds. It was awful! The storm is coming, the storm is coming. I was going to go out on group rides this weekend, both Sat and Sunday, so I put off my trainer ride. Now they've been cancelled. UGH! I hate that. Puts a damper on my plans. If I've known earlier, I would have put in a trainer ride yesterday.  Oh well.

Hope the weather is nicer for those who are racing this weekend!

Is it here? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semitendinosus.  If so, that's one of the insertion points and CAN be a more serious issue than if it was in the belly of the muscle.  Mine was the opposite insertion point and took two months to heal completely and even then I am on a slow recovery back with running.  Two options, rest it a few days and see how it feels OR get it checked out.  My one concern is you said it only hurts when your foot contracts the ground.    Is it sore anywhere else? not even necessarily hamstring area?

From reading in COJ, they seem to be having issues with their Governor

PSHHHH.....trade him for Governor Moonbeam, anyday.

My 2 cents:
Dude. F That. You'll have trained hard for 6 months leading up to May.
It's June I assume? Relax. Kiss the kids. Kiss your wife. Have a couple beers.  ppffff 5k swim. Relax. Chill. Enjoy the downtime.

Following on John's heels with a race scheduling question...

Sorry John, I am a rook, so I have no idea what post IM 4 weeks will feel like...I am imagining a nice long recovery...

I have tentatively scheduled an Olympic on June 19, then Vineman 70.3 on July 18, then IMWI on Sept 11.

Today I got an email for a new race in Silicon Valley that is a long course tri (1 mile swim in a lake, 56 mile bike and then a 9 mile run).  Coach says either is fine...I tend to like longer bikes because I don't have to put pedal to the medal, but wonder if doing a pedal to the medal is a good thing pre- IM.  Any ideas?  Did you guys do sprints or olys before IM's?  or find them helpful?

Hello again.  We swapped out the hard drive and amazingly the computer still works. Major props for Dell.  I'm not even going to attempt to catch up so someone give me the Readers Digest version please.

I see John is back, good to see.  About your 5K swim race question, I would ask how much do you enjoy swimming and how overwhelming has your training been?  Personally I plan on taking some time off and gaining some weight after Canada.  Maybe you should check out this swim. The Chesapeake Bay swim, 4.4 miles.  I've put this on my short list of races to complete after the IM.  Maybe we could swim it together.

It is 70 degrees here and predicted to be 78 tomorrow!!!   I can't wait for my long run this weekend in shorts and a tank top!   People around me will need to wear sun glasses to protect from the white glare off my skin!

time off is in order for sure.  i'm thinking, maybe wrongly, that a couple weeks of doing nothing and a couple weeks of 3 x 3-4k swim work outs isn't time consuming and not to rough on the body.  i should be in decent shape.   and there's free beer at the end.

thanks for the feedback so far.  maybe not the smartest thing.

hi hot stuff.  good to be back.

Ooop. Didn't get to finish last post.

Funny -- I think answering posts before or after long workouts affects one's opinion. Having just finished a long day, I say heck no to that... but with a caveat!!

Play it by ear and make a decision a week or two before. Keep it on the back burner as a maybe, and if you find yourself jonesing to swim, then go for it. But I wouldn't PLAN on it. (Although to me it does sound fun, and I've thought about doing some OWS racing this summer...)

Also, I didn't get a response to this when I asked earlier, so I'm going to ask again!  Do you guys know what the limitations on a mag trainer are as compared to a fluid trainer?  I'm looking at buying a fluid because Ryan thinks I'm starting to ride outside the limitations of the mag.  I'm not really sure what that means.

Fluid trainers are usually quieter, provide the most realistic ride, and are very durable.  Usually considered the top of the food chain.    Here is a link that may help you.....

Love our new governor...but agree with Suzy that he presented the message all wrong.  Right idea, wrong execution.....kind of like some of my previous race strategies!!!  Foot in mouth

5k swim - isn't that 3 miles - over 5,000 open water yards?  I wouldn't do it.  For me, 2 weeks of NOTHING post-IM - and then I'm swimming and cycling recovery style for the next week to 10 days.  I know there are lots of athletes out there that go back sooner, but my body really wasn't ready for anything tough in a month - especially a race.  Having said that, you'll still have a pretty high level of fitness, and a swim shouldn't hurt.

HOWEVER (and my family always cringes at that) I'm with Trevor.  Kiss the wife and kids, spend some family time.  You're wiped right now.....and it's gonna get tougher.  On them, too.  I wouldn't schedule much for this summer.

October?!  Oh yeah.  Try to beat Kim's time!

it was AMAZING weather today!!! i woke up to 57* at 0530 and went for a slowish 3 miler before work, did crossfit at lunch and did a sort of TT on the bike in the afternoon (interrupted in the middle with a call from the wife telling me my son broke his nose!)... it reached 83* today and is supposed to continue in the low 80's - high 70's for the next week or so... needless to say, i will be doing all my training outdoors

on a side note, i got my first pair of desoto 400 milers and am absolutely IN LOVE with these bibs!!!  i do NOT know why i didn't get these soonerYell

I guess I don't know what it means that he thinks I'm "riding outside the mag trainer's limitations."  I know the fluid is better than the mag, but how so am I riding outside of one's limitations?  I don't get it.
