Starting to do some of my morning workouts fasted as Bryan suggested.  See if I can't drop these last few lbs. around my gut.  Off to see the attorney about updating our will this afternoon.  It's been 2 years since our youngest was born and nothing in there about her.  Ooops.  This trip to Italy sure is making me remember a lot of things I've been putting off.

Anyone been to Venice?  We'll be there on our 10th anny so I'm thinking about dropping a little extra $$$ on a hotel room.  Suggestions?

..yeah, I saw your pre-race pancakes in your blog. What's with you gals and waffles and pancakes?

Its always pancakes (no butter), 2 eggs over easy and dry toast or a dry english muffin.

Why no butter?  I love eggs, but they sit heavy for me so they're a no go.  Plus I just don't want to do any real cooking at that time of the morning.

Doesn't really answer the question does it?

Look, at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter nearly as much as articles in Triathlete magazine and "studies" from PrepetuHammerHeedWhatever try and sell you. Just eat real, normal, food you are accustomed to. There is no such thing as "carb loading" or whatever else bit of nutritional voodoo is in vougue.

Why no butter?

She said it in the previous post, she eliminates fat...the real question is why?

I'm cool with the eliminating fat if you want to.  It's just that the eggs w/ yolks would run contrary to that premise.

Not to mention that pancakes often have oil mixed in and are grilled using butter.. at least if they are going to be edible.

The egg yolks/pancakes are pretty much the only fat for the day.

Fat aggrevates my stomach.  When I eliminated most of it the day before the race, stomach issues stopped.

My race Sunday is cancelled.

I knew it was coming, but it still sucks. The largest fire NM has ever had is barely 2 miles north of there (and still going in some spots). They have been staging the fire fighters (over 1,000) in the camp grounds, the lake is being used to fill the helo's for fire fighter, and there's word that it might be contaminated with ash fallout.

that really sucks, but i think they are looking out for the athletes in the long run. Go for that race in September, you are already trained and a little hills never hurt anyone!!!

What I've figured out in my short time as a triathlete.  Fast food and/or coffee pre race is not good no matter how short on time to eat I happen to be.  Red sauce on pasta the night before is a no go as well (acidity).  Fiber doesn't bother me so bland, fiberous carbs like oats/whole wheat pasta/ww bread are good to go.  Chicken breast and non blackened fish fit the bill for the proteins the day before.

I haven't had McDonalds since college maybe.  Makes my stomach hurt.  There are 5 guys and lots of local burger joints here.  Seems burgers are the new in food to try and make "gourmet" around here.

on a serious note, since you all know i am freaking crazy anyway, here is what i ate pre-half IM

I drank a ton of fluids, mostly water or EFS drink prior to the race

Breakfast the day before was a few bannana's, PB and J sammies, a cliff bar

Lunch was more fruit, a chicken breast  and some salad.

Dinner the night before the race was a Big Ol' Black and Tan (beer) , and grilled haddock with vegatables

Morning of race brekkie was a pb&j and a bananna, small cup of black coffee and 2 bottles of EFS drink to top off nutrition. Gu prior to start.

I have an iron stomach and as long as i visit the facility prior to race, i am good to go for the day.

On the bike i had 2 bottles of EFS shot and powder mixed, 500 cals per bottle, and 1 bottle of water and Gu rocktane mix (cherry lime). I grabbed one bottle of water while on the bike, most ended up on me, some i drank.

On the run i went through 2 gu's and a EFS shot bottle, about 600 cals.

for shorter races the morning of is the same, but i take in NO nutrition or really much fluid on the course.  All is done prior.

Things i avoid, rich foods, any mayonaisse, fried or other garbage. Pretty much anything dairy, except maybe cheese. i try to get protein and fiber, fruits and veggies.

Yeah, me too.  That's not so bad Rudy.

I'm another waffle girl.  Love my waffles pre-race.  Used to be a bagel with peanut butter (actually before that was 2 packets of instant oatmeal - one flavored, one plain), but I love Kashi 7 Grain waffles with peanut butter and honey.  Sits well on my stomach.

When you say you avoid fat, day prior to race, does good fat count?  I love an omelete with avocado and spinach.  Clearly the avocaod is fatty, but good fat, right?  And good energy.

Hit the lake this morning in the wetsuit.  arrived at 5:50 am, and the water was like glass.  Got in 800 yards, then practiced tranistion, and did an hour on the bike.  Couldn't get the HR down initially, too many hills early on, but then settled in.  Although, legs were pretty heavy.  Blaming it on yesterday intervals.

For me the type of fat doesn't matter.  I have a hard time digesting any fat so after breakfast the day before a race, I avoid it.  Pre-race breakfast is always the same:  unsweetened applesauce, a scoop of whey protein, a banana and 24 oz of sports drink.

Actually minus the EFS, I am very similar. And I have some red wine instead of a beer the night before, helps me relax.

Great report. In regards to pool vs. OWS, the issue I find is the lack of visual cues (the tiles on the bottom, the lane lines, the approaching wall, ect) which makes pacing more difficult OW.

This is going to sound weird but I think I need perscription goggles.  I use glasses for driving and I have a hard time seeing the buoys sometimes.  Not sure its going to fix everything, but think its going to help.

Great Race Report Kelly.  You truly stuck to your plan.  I have to imagine with all the excitement going on, it's hard to do that.

My question is, how common is it to hav GI issues like you did on the run, totally slowing down your pace.  Without that being an issue, how much time do you think you would have gained?  Just curious.  Very impressed.
