Transition opens at 5:00 a.m. and closes at 6:15 a.m. So if you are in the last age group wave, you don't start until 7:30 a.m. and have an hour and 15 minutes to sit and wait. Just the way it is. Last year it seemed as if a LOT of athletes thought 6:15 a.m. was too early to close transition and caused some unnecessary drama. I felt bad for the organizers who were sweeping transition and people were literally just ignoring them. They had to resort to threatening penalties. So just a heads up... transition closes at 6:15 a.m. Yeah, this is a good heads up. I forgot my water bottles at my campsite last year and thought I would have plenty of time. Boy was I wrong. I spent a few stressful minutes getting threatened with disqualification if I didn't get out of transition. Not the way I wanted to start the morning. |

Did you pack your wet suit and stuff in the T1 bag to be moved to T2 or leave it at T1? Thanks They did not offer this service last year from what I remember. I plan on leaving everything in T1, not packing it up. I had to do this (required) for another race last year and felt it added significant time to my T1. Stuffing a wet wetsuit in a tiny plastic bag is not as easy as it sounds. Plus T1 is less than half a mile from the finish line so it will be a nice cool down walk after the race |

Did you pack your wet suit and stuff in the T1 bag to be moved to T2 or leave it at T1? Thanks Well, I placed my gear in the dinky gatorade bag they gave us for T1 so they would bring it to T2. That bag was not big enough for a wetsuit and any leftover misc gear like shoes or anything you wore to T1. I somehow got it all in there but it never made it to my T2 spot and I had to go rumage through the pile of bags they tossed by the finish stage to find it. Moral of the story, leave it at T1 and go get it after the race or you may never see it again unless the improved the method. |

Veteran 297 Kansas | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread I don't remember last year them saying the T1 bags would be deposited in your designated T2 spot. There was an area set up where the bags were in piles based on numbers. The Gatorade bags, while not large trash bags, can get a squeezed wetsuit inside and maybe some flip flops worn down to the T1 that morning, but nothing else. If you want to use the bag method, the key is just bring down there what you need and not the non-essentials like an ipod. I didn't leave anything at T1, but I do remember, they started tearing that transition area down pretty quickly, so if you are going to leave stuff there, I would book it down there pretty quickly after finishing. While maybe not the best system, I didn't regret not having to walk down and back from T1 after the race as I was entirely satisfied with traveling just 70.3 miles that day on my own locomotion. Regular 75 Prairie Village, KS | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Alright, how about this for a swim plan on Saturday. We can all meet at 3:15 at my campsite (261). Based on RR's comments about the swimming, we may have to go across the lake to the Bloomington Beach area to get the swim done. I have no problem letting 4 others pile in my car to head over there. I am not sure how many will show up, but we probably would need another vehicle unless someone has an SUV where we can all fit. 3:15 lets anyone who wants to go to the 2pm race briefing still come swim. It will also give everyone a chance to ride their bikes a bit and get them checked in. We would probably be in the water by 4pm and could conceivably be back to the race site shortly after 5pm at the latest. The other option would be to push it back an hour to 4:15 just to give everyone more time to get checked in and go to the briefing. It would just mean we get back to the race site later. If anyone has any opposition to this let me know. If anyone has a better idea let me know. I just want to get everyone on the same page so we can all get a swim in together. Suggestions........ |

I like the plan, but the only wild card is how long the packet pickup/bike check in line will be. Last year it was horrendous. I'd rather do a 4:15 time just to be safe? But then again I don't have dinner plans except sitting in my camp chair and eating some homemade pasta salad - so timing is not a huge issue for me in the evening. Anyone else want to chime in? |

Too many variable between when you drop off the bike and it closes on Saturday and during the night. Last year, a storm rolled through, and you would have had soggy shoes the next morning. |

I haven't really responded to anything here before, but I am interested in joining you gals and guys for the swim. This would be my first actually BT get together and I am interested in meeting all the people behind the words they write! I like the 4:15 time if that is any help in the decision process. |

My hard flat training rides have left my wishing for one more gear... Most of the hills are not steep (out of your saddle type) but long, not many chances to carry your momentum up, but if you typically leave your bike on the big chain ring for avarage hills, and don't spend much time on flats, go with the 11-23, that is what I will be using, it comes in handy on the long descents back down. |

Last year I rode a 12-25 and never got into the big cog, but I did spin out of my 52-12 on some of the down hills. |

Veteran 144 Little Elm, Texas | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread I rode a 12-25 last year and it was perfect, but I don't push the downhills at all and try hard to spin the uphills. On the T1 questions. I left my wetsuit, goggles, etc... at the bike. I can't remember if I picked it up at the bike or somewhere else, but someone did pack my stuff into the gatorade bag. I remember b/c when I got back to the hotel room I realized that they put an extra pair of goggles in my bag. Ooops. Hopefully this year we will just be able to go back and pick up the stuff. T1 is crowded (which is common), on concrete, and last year there were no wetsuit strippers. These were my only complaints about the race last year. Everything else was top notch! I liked it enough that I'm coming back. If you're reading this Ryan, how about wetsuit strippers this year? Makes life easier and with the hard surface, can help prevent damage to your wetsuit. |
