Not really garden, per se, but this was my haul from the organic/whole foods coop dumpster last night--9 50lb bags of artisinal breads.  The chickens and pigs at our house eat better than many humans--almost all dumpster loot.

And here's a pic of the infant orchard-- 32 trees 4 years or less on this side (west), another 25 or so on the other side
(east) of the drive.

Those are beautiful! Isn't it amazing how crisp fresh potatoes are when you cut them? Was the salad a cold mayo based one or a warm vinegar and oil based version? If you guys agree to live in a tipi or yurt, you could come live at the farm for a year or two

cold mayo based. That's from one potato plant. We pulled another one and got a similar amount. I have about 10+ more plants that are also probably done as well. I might try and plant some more now.

Harvested all of my potatoes. This is about 3/4 of the full harvest (eaten some already and gave some away to the neighbor who watered my garden while I was gone for a week)

Going to try and get some more in the ground today or tomorrow.

I'm about to be overwhelmed with peppers and tomatoes.

That is gorgeous Josh. Are you pumped or what? Do you put any in your stuff up? Freezing, drying, or canning?

I have an almost 2 year old and he got it(it's a squirt gun) taken away for dinner.

We haven't ever produced enough to store before so I don't have any of the equipment. I'm thinking about getting a canning set though. I'll have more than enough tomatoes to can a few jars.

Not bad for a late start. Little birds spend their mornings in the sun flowers. No seeded crops this year like carrots or beets. I am going to miss my beet salads.

May plant some greens this time. Anyone else plant a fall garden?

I would like to try a fall garden. I didn't want to plant a garden this year because I was afraid my puppy (now 7 months) would dig it all up but he left our sunflowers alone so I think we'll go for it. Now I need to research what to plant.

Here is a pick of my random pumpkin plants growing in our landscaping. I have had to tear out about six other vines because they were choking out everything else! My plants are very happy this year, we've had an unusually rainy summer here in IL. Every flower growing in this section is a start that my sister gave me from flowers growing at her house.

Woah!  What late start?  Look at those plants!  Your tomatoes have a foot one mine--lol.  Nice work, and the fence still looks super sweet :)

p.s.  You "could" vacation in the Teepee, but that's our "Pee-pee Teepee"-- we have a bigger one that is perfect for sleeping in, though we haven't replaced the cover since the last derecho tore it to shreds.  When we get it functional, I'll let you guys know, and then if you're ever passing through Iowa you can check it out :)

Very nice:)  Shared plants and starts are the very best kind, IMO.

Well your son has very good tastes in squirt guns:)  Funny, my boy has a purple squirt gun he's fond of too, and he just turned three yesterday.  When is your son's birthday?

Waterbath canning is very straight forward, though doing tomatoes that way can be a little tricky.  The Ball Canning book is pretty helpful resource.  For a "few jars" worth of tomatoes, freezing is a good option too.

Some very nice gardens pictured in this thread. One of our gardens can to an early demise as a tree fell onto it taking out the power service line damaging the house as well. But all is well, it could have been a lot worse. Yesterday I made purple hull pea hull jelly. Love the stuff and its a very nice color to boot.

His birthday is on 9/11 actually, easy to remember. I was going to try and buy some canning stuff this fall because hopefully next year I'll expand a bit more so I have even more to preserve.

I have done a lot of work on my dirt. The apparent raised beds is because of amendments - compost, poop, coffee grounds, Pete moss - have mounded up the area, and I kept framing it with river rock and bricks that i scavange.w N Nevada dirt is pretty stark, especially when your yard went years used as a skateboard park, all covered up with plywood. Not a single worm the first time I dug it up. I planted in the ground in mid-June this year due to fencing contractors. But the biggest thing for being ahead this year is that it did snow in June like normal!

I am surprised no one asked about the embedded wine bottles (my FB peeps really razzed me). Those are my back up emergency watering system.

Wow - to have two tee-pees! How cool are you!

Nice back up water!  Awesome!

Two teepees because we run a summer camp :

We seriously, seriously, considered living in a yurt out here, but my mom said she would call DHS on me if I moved into a yurt with two young babies in Iowa with winter approaching.  She's a wonderful woman, really, she just had a freaky grandmother moment;)

My husband sent me these pics of my girls' wheat project while I was away this weekend:

Harvested and hand threshed wheat.

Winnowing.

Kernels ready for grinding.

Bread made from 100% wheat flour.

They're in love with the Little House on the Prairie series, so this was a big deal for them.
