Yuck Syndi, that sounds miserable. Here in Illinois, temps in the 90s are not uncommon in the summer, and the humidity is rough to deal with. To some extent, your body will acclimate to the heat, but until then, you may have to lower your expectations somewhat. Run early in the day if possible, hydrate a lot, be prepared to take walk breaks if need be.

Some people like to wear a visor or light-colored hat when it's hot too.

I can definately relate to the heat! We are hitting 100 now, and I doubt it will cool down now until Sept!
I did a miserable brick yesterday, and I am thinking a long brick before IM isn't going to happen! I started my 60 mile ride at 6am, and by the time I got at 10am, it was already 100 and my 6 mile run was awful!

wow crazy hot. and here i thought it was hot yesterday at 90 degrees in northern cali. i biked 70 miles and drank about 5 liters of water... i had 2 water bottles plus my aero bottle. i use sports drink but i've learned that i need to supplement with electrolyte capsules otherwise i'll start cramping. got back and my jersey was covered with salt crystals... but no cramping.

but its a great way to work on your tan.

WTG on your race with some rough circumstances!

I have a question for you race veterans - There is an rr up for a person on my May challenge team.  I guess in her race there was limited space for the bike portion and everyone got bunched up several times - a couple of people tried to get out of the bunch and go left so they wouldn't be penalized for drafting, but the refs had them get back in the group.  This woman stayed in the bunch, but then got penalized 2 min for drafting.  Is this just a situation where you have to stay back?

In my experience (which only includes 4 tris) there have been a couple times when the course was just crowded and it was nearly impossible to stay away from other people.  As far as I know the refs didn't get carried away with the drafting penalty.  Personally, I think the drafting penalty should only be applied when someone is actually trying to draft, and not stuck in a traffic jam.... but if they get an opportunity to leave the traffic jam, or they can drop back a little, they should, and if they don't, the penalty is deserved.

On the topic of heat.... I live in a rather mild area, but tend to end up in hotter areas on my bike rides, and sometimes it does get hot here.  I find that I have to drink WAY more when it's hot, and if I do that, I'm ok.  Also, I wear light colors, including a hat.  I'm still not great at gaging my body's reaction to heat though... case in point, Wildflower, where it wasn't even that hot, but I paid for not drinking enough on the bike, and I know I would have been fine if it was colder.

That's what I like about my aero bottle... its right there in front of my face and you can't help but not keep drinking. I take a sip every 15 min or so. I even use the aero bottle during regular rides now.

On regular rides I always wear a Camelbak. That's why I'm thinking about doing it for races now. When it's hot I need a LOT of fluids.

What is this "heat" and "hot" that you all are talking about?  Foreign concept.  I'd love a bit of that up here in the still-cold northland.  At least the ice is off the lakes now.  Cool

Ok, I am getting a little worried and hope the weather forcast is wrong! I have my big weekend planned with 100 mile ride. The last one I did I ended up on the trainer for 2 hours. I really want to be out for this one. Forcast is thunderstorms, which I can't ride in. We get wicked storms outs here in the desert and I would be all alone on the highway for miles. Storms for Fri, Sat and Sun- which are all my open days! Good news is these record highs are going away and we should be back in the 80's for a few days!
I am getting so stressed! This IM training is really taking a toll on me. I need to relax and enjoy the journey, but it is hard when me, and everyone around me is concerned about making the bike cut off. For some reason I am odd and just can't go fast. The other day on the flats I finally managed 15 mph average over 60 miles! My hope is that my downhills will balance the uphills and the rest I can maintain over 14 mph. This only happens when I have no wind. What is the chance of that happening at IM? Probably slim.
I am trying to think positive. Last week my 7 year old son tested for his black belt in Karate and I have been stressed over that for weeks! He doesn't do well on his bored breaks, and during practice he just wasn't doing it. I was a wreck at testing, but when the time came, he went through those boards like paper and got it done! I just keep thinkg that the same thing can happen to me- when it counts, I can do it!
Sorry for the vent, I am just feeling very stressed right now and needed to share with someone besides hubby- who hears it too much!

I wish I could worry about heat. Where I live, it refuses to warm up past 65 degrees!

Subject: ITB anyone?

So I went to the sports med doc yesterday.  Seems that my strange knee pain on Sunday was the start of an ITB issue.  Yay.  At least it isn't something huge (like requiring surgery).  I know this is managable.  Anyone here dealt with it before?  Suggestions?

Donato, hope your week is going well.

Yuk, sorry to hear that.  Unfortunately, I have some experience in that area.  It seems to be pretty common, especially with women runners. My doc kept referring me to physical therapy, and I would do it religiously for a while and then get bored.  The best thing I ever did was to start taking a kickboxing/body conditioning class 2x a week.  There are a lot of runners in the class, and the teacher has us doing lots of one-legged drills, squats, etc. so that we are really working the hips, knees and ankles.  Also lots of core work.  So now I'm having plantar fasciitis issues, but no more hip, knee, ankle pain...

Today Donato is doing IM Lanzarote.... 2.4 mile swim. 112 mile bike complete with 9000 ft elevation change and 20 mph winds (sometimes both at the same time). 26.2 mile run... all in 80 degree weather. What are you folks doing this long weekend?

I'm doing a light easy ride this morning, hopefully 50 miles but it depends on how my colleague holds up. Likely hike and OWS Sunday. Then I'll try to push it on a hilly 70 miler on Monday to finish off my 3 week bike cycle... so to speak.

So now I am feeling like a wimp because I cut my 100 mile ride to 50 when the lighting started! the weather just hasn't been cooperating this week. Suppose to clear up and should do better next weekend.

Great job Donato!!!!  Way to go!!!

How is everyone doing this week?  I had a 4-day weekend and planned on training my rear end off.... however, on Sat I went to a BBQ and got absolutely hammered (oops!) so yesterday was lost to my hangover.  At least I did get in a nice brick on Fri and a decent ride today.

Ok, so I have been itching to make some changes to my bike.  I used to have a cheap road bike (sold it to my sis) and several months ago I bought a tri bike (used Cervelo One).  It is nice enough, 105/Ultegra, and feels fairly comfortable even though I have only made minor tweaks and haven't gotten a proper fitting.  So for all of this year I've been riding it, and it's great on flat ground, but on climbs and descents and winding roads with crappy pavement (which is most of my riding around here) I like having immediate access to both my brakes and my shifters.  I've put about 600 miles on my tri bike, but I just haven't felt that comfortable (mentally more than physically) riding in the aerobars.  So the way I see it, here are my options:

1.  Get a proper fitting on my tri bike (I think I could use shorter aero bars and narrower bullhorns), and stop being a weenie about climbing/descending in aero.

2.  Get a new road bike!  Then I can make a decision regarding the tri bike later (I would probably keep it for flatter races).  I'm not exactly thrilled at the prospect of dropping major cash, but I could tolerate parting with around $1500, maybe a tiny bit more if necessary to get what I want.

hmmmm... decisions, decisions.

Donato, that is impressive! Way to go!

Froglegs: I would at least start with a fitting to see if you can make this bike work. Even if you drop $100, if it works it's much cheaper than $1500. If it doesn't work, you know you gave it a good shot and didn't waste your money.

Hi peeps.  Guten morgen from Berlin (we're 9 hours ahead here).  Thanks for all of your support before my race and the congrats afterward.  it was quite grueling at times, but I survived.  I had a bit of a chest cold (thanks to my relatives) and I had somehow injured my big toe prior to racing.  Still I did it.  My toe, however, is quite swollen and painful, so I have to figure that one out.  my mom, dad, and sister's father in law are all retired M.D.'s so I get good care, but it's quite painful and I'm limping.  We're back to Bremen on Thursday and fly back to S.F. on Saturday.

Glad to see everyone is keeping up their training!  I'm looking forward to being back in the swing of things again.

I'm racing in my first oly this weekend. It should be fun, though the ows in the bay could be interesting.

Hope you all are getting some good training in!
