In response to Mo’s earlier request, my Jan. challenge feedback:

After my first day in the pool (oh my!), I never, ever, ever would have believed after one month of training, I’d be able to swim 1,000 yards, let alone do it in under 40 minutes.  I also didn’t expect after one month I'd be able to bike, run and/or swim back to back for an hour.  But I can.

I am really surprised at my progress so far, how much fun I'm having, and how dedicated I am to continuing with this.  I truly appreciate all the advice and motivation you all have offered.  It is an enormous help.  I recently signed up for my first tri (in April) and I’m pretty confident I’ll make it!

My key focuses this month:  endurance, learning proper bike form & technique, nutrition (learning to eat breakfast has been especially tough for me).

Again, my sincere thanks to all of you for your great inspirations and suggestions!  Keep ‘em coming!!

Btw, a few more reasons I know Mo’s a great coach:  he’s the only person who could convince me to buy a fitness swimsuit online, and to weigh myself naked – twice – first thing in the morning.  Both with surprisingly positive results, I might add.

awesome job on signing up for your first tri.. you will finish and with a big smile on your face... you have done a great job so far in training (consistency is the biggest thing in this sport).. KEEP IT UP and TRI HARD..

Thanks for the info about the heart rate Maurice.

My race is a 5k. I know in March the sat before my race ther is a 2 mile race and a 10K. I have already done 2 5k and I think I can get a group of friends to race and push me on a 5k outdoors.

The Jan challenge was good. I wanted to get one more swim in but..... I am looking forward to the Feb challenge. My totals were:

 Bike - 173 mi

 Swim -  7100 yds

 Run - 40 mi

I had set some personal bike & run goals that I will need to adjust :-)

GX your Jan totals are fantastic, especially when you consider the hours and devotion it took to produce them.  Congratulations!  Look forward to seeing what you achieve in Feb.!

Yes she is!!!Cool. I lusted after the same model last year before opting out for the cheaper S32. Don't regret it, but I can't stop from seeing an S22 without thinking admiring it. Now you better really enjoy that ride tomorrow!

thanks.. i got a good ride in on sat afternoon.. it was good other than the head wind. and burning quads from speed work.. it sucks sometimes.. that there is no such thing as a leisure ride anymore.. all rides have a purpose. i guess recovery is a leisure but its short.

didn't do anything but clean on sunday... feel like a bum because i didn't do anything.. UUURRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!

enough about me, what did you guys do?.. hopefully something more entertaining than i did..

I had a nice senic ride and run this weekend while away from home and I also went and tried on wetsuits.....this proved to be a source of frustration until I caught a glimpse of my efforts in the mirror and began to laugh. I had never put a wet suit on before and it took quite a while for me to get it on and adjusted. My face was red I felt like I was about to start sweating.  but had a good time and got to try a few out in the water. I was surprised at the bouncy. I dont think I could have drowned if I wanted to in a few of them.

Maurice great looking bike!

I did a long brick - 1:40 on the bike followed by 60 min run. Kept the heart rate below 150 the entire team and actually averaged 135. Felt like I could go for days at that pace, although I felt extremely slow. Probably going to take a rest day and give my body some time to recover from the weekend 5k and brick. Take care all!

Running form question - I should be trying to avoid a heel strike on my runs and really use my forefoot? Just checking as I try to improve my running.

How is your running posture?(straight, bent over, bent back).. Your posture will dictate the impact of the heel but not rid the heel strike. When i ran track in college.. the coach would always told the distance runner to plop along.. (meaning plant the entire foot, lifting the knees high to create a faster turn over)

I think heel striking is a natural thing for most of us.. but i do what my track recommended for the runners.. i still heel strike but not as much, and i wear a firm shoes(not much flex) with heel cushion. (ex.. mizuno and sacouny is have a narrow heel these shoes fit me best)

I will talk to some of people in my running club.. and ask them.. I will return to this.

Hi Team Mo, I just wanted to make a quick apology to everyone for being less active within the group as of late. I am trying to get my training groove back after some setbacks and extremely painful dental work done over the past few weeks.

My biggest frustration right now has been not being able to swim much because of an open wound on my foot. Am I being too cautious by staying out of the pool until it completely heals over? I am doing this to be courteous to my fellow pool mates and to avoid any infections. Any advice would be appreciated.

cuts are tricky when it come to pool.. how old is the wound? is it deep? my rule is if the cut is still tender, meaning hurts pretty good when i push on it.. i don't swim. that tells me that it could bleed if damp or rubbed.. That's my rule of thumb.. there may be difference of opinion.

I agree with you 100%, Mo. The wound is only a few days old and is still very tender. I am just feeling incredibly guilty for being out of the pool for so long. Thank you for the reassurances.  I will take a couple more days off from swimming until everything is all healed up.

My USMC Drill Instructor (DI) would have just said - "that chlorine" will help kill any creepers in your mouth!

Needless to say - I dont suggest you follow his guidance. Do what you need to get healthy! Sometimes we take shortcuts that turn out not to be so "short", so don't pressure yourself!!!!!!!

I had a pretty serious lung injury a couple of years ago and I took my time returning. I often felt like a "sloth", but that was better than putting myself out of commission for good. I promise the pool won't go anywhere and will welcome you with "cold" wet arms!

I agree you should allow your body time to heal. I hope your foot heals soon.

That's a beautiful bike, Mo!  Glad you're out there enjoying it.  Looks like a pretty tiny seat though - I don't know how you guys manage that!

My ride is a Schwinn mountain bike circa late 1980s I think.  I haven't done much road biking over the years.  Took it out for a lengthy spin this weekend on some back country roads.  Had a blast!  I was a little nervous dealing with the hills, wind, curves, and cars. My mountain bike ventures usually involve knocking into a tree or two, so it was pretty sweet to end the day relatively unscathed.

Learned I need to practice drinking while riding (it's tough to do while running too), and I'm going to look into getting some kind of mirror so I can see cars approaching.

I will tag on to Wilma's seat comment....I had been training only in the gym on the stationary with a nice fat seat with no problems. I was worried the little saddle on the new back would be bad...but so far no problems..I guess I had built up my sit muscles...nice surprise!

well.. the seat is pretty thin and hard... the horn of the seat has more cushion.. which helps us guys and you ladies to when in aero.. they make other seats.. at first i had a hard time with the seat.. after some adjustments, its ok..

I started my riding of a spin class stationary bike wick is like a brick hard seat that is to small for my tush....but oddly enough now I perfer that seat to the other stationary bike seats and I did not have any problems with the seat on my actual bike when I started riding outside. I think your body just adjust and gets used to it.
