Wow you guys are chatty.

Went for a 2 hour ride today it was so nice out. Ended up getting in 46 Km's or so.  It is funny the days I go with my tri club are the days that only people training for IronMan show up and then me so it was a bit of a killer ride but they only had to wait a few times.  I HATE HILLS .  But I got it done and it was great to get out there.

Haha .. good thing I didn't go with you. ;-0 Actually my Achilles is KILLING me today ... trying to run this morning may have been a major setback ... I'm hobbling around the house now. I can't even go to spin tonight, I'm in that much pain. Damm I hate injuries.

I'm really sorry to hear that! Now you make sure you stay off it until it's good and healed--we want you in the best shape possible ... being a fitness instructor you know all this ... but I still thought I'd "yes, MOOOOM" you.

Thanks for the encouragment on the bike.  If any of you have time, stop over at the Classifieds board and check out the bikes that have been offered to me http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid... I also have a bid on Ebay for a Trek WSD.    I am more drawn to the WSD.   The Trek is a men's frame.  Haven't heard back from the first offer - the craigslist one - on price.   Got some nice photos of the Specialized today.

You're right about the classifieds. I bought a great used Cervelo P2 SL here two weeks ago. I'm still slow but I feel faster.

See if you can get the WSD, especially since you have long legs. However, the Trek looks good, and Kristin is very trustworthy, so whatever you can get

Also check out the classifieds on slowtwitch.com ... they move a lot faster than they do here.

Thanks for all the info. I was starting to feel like a slacker because I haven't done any sort of testing for my running. But, now I'm feeling like it's okay that I haven't yet.
I just really started running in January, and I've been taking it slow. The last thing I want is a running injury to take me out for weeks or months. So, I think I'll hold off on the testing, and not put extra pressure on myself.

Yes MoOOOM! LOL!

This is an old injury - I tore my Achilles about 10 years ago, and it healed terribly so am now very often prone to re-injury and inflammation. I'm used to it.

I've tweaked my plan for the next few weeks to cut out running - just swim, bike, and yoga ... even though my doc has cleared me to run I think I'll still go easy.

Take it from me kids - take it slow and easy until you're really prepared! These injuries are tough to come back from!

I LOVED BART YASSO'S BOOK, 'MY LIFE ON THE RUN'  [Yasso is the Chief Running Officer for Runners World Magazine.  cool gig, huh?]

mostly funny/inspirational stories.  [i especially enjoyed the chapter on 5K he did at a nudist camp.  no joke]

some trng info, but all run focused.

I've since met Yasso in person.  He came to PGH and spoke at a marathon kick off event.  VERY nice man.  AMAZING life story.

my middle son (who is just starting to 'take' to running) told him about his open heart surgery he had last year.  and Bart took Mitchell aside, put his arm over his shoulder and very genuinely told him that Mitchell was his hero.  my kid was on cloud nine for weeks.

hes the real deal.

HAPPY READING.

skrtrnr - 2009-04-13 4:23 PM ANYONE HAVE ANY SECRET TRICKS TO MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM THE BIKE TO THE RUN GO SMOOTHER?

i have orthotics that need to be contended w.  not much i can do about that, but....

im all ears w my first tri experience just round the bend.

im not so concerned about the swim to bike transition since i will only have to get my cycling shoes and helmet on.  (im wearing a tri suit so no fuss that way)

any suggestions/tips would be most welcome.

Do you wear the orthotics in the bike shoes as well?

Are you using clipless pedals or toe straps or just plain platform pedals?

No clothing switch here either.

You can losen shoes so that once you meet dismount area you go to transition with your socks/barefeet.  Have another pair with the runners waiting if it is messy.

You have to leave helmet on until bike is racked (this is how I have seen it so make sure this is the rule at yours).  Other than shoes that is really all you need to switch up (hydration belt possibly but I think it is a sprint right?)

BILL.  hey thanks for the response to my question....

heres the downlow.

i DO have to wear my orthotics in my cycling shoes, but im trying to figure out if theres a way to go without them.  would make the transition swiftier.  but im thinking, who cares, if i get injured it wont matter how fast my T2 was.

im using clipless pedals.  i have mt bike shoes, so they have a 'tread' on the bottom.

i dont feel proficient enough to have my shoes already on the pedals before i start my ride, nor do i feel competent enough to come out the shoes while im still on the bike/moving [maybe some day.....]

that said, i dont mind doing the barefoot/stocking foot thing in the transitions.  so i could give that whirl.

there wont be any transition w my clothes since i have tri suit (thankfully)

its actually a mini (even shorter than a sprint)

OBVIOUSLY I'M NOT A PODIATRIST ... just a thought ... for a mini-sprint, could you put inserts in your cycling shoes that mimic your orthotics? (It's worth putting in a call to your pod or ortho to ask) For example, I cycle (depending on the shoe) with Flat Feet inserts or those hard green ones for overpronators, but use my orthotics for running. And I have some of the worst feet that running shoe stores or my podiatrist (who outfits the Cal State LA running team) have ever seen.

As far as the barefoot thing, try spraying the inside of your cycling shoes and running shoes with TriSlide. (I mean, you can also BodyGlide the insides, but it's a lot easier to use the TriSlide spray).

HI MANTATEES.

first of four bricks today - swim to spin  weather is crappy, so outside isnt an option.  :P

ive done bricks before so i know what to 'expect' going in.  i always love them cuz they feel like the 'real thing'.

im super silly excited too.

i just got two invites for team get-togethers/meetings for the Masters Swim Team and the MS150 team.

having never been an athlete before, and never a part of a team, its a really cool feeling to be a part of something like this.

the Masters Swim Team is get-together for fun, so im hoping i start connecting w people before i start to swim w them on a regular basis (this summer after the MS150)

the MS150 is a team/info meeting w FOOD.  oh yum!  most of the teammembers are complete strangers to me.  so im hoping to meet some folks and get the inside scoop/pointers on the ride.

HAPPY!  HAPPY!

YANTI.  its a thought (and one i hadnt thought of actually)  i just thought id go w just the insoles that came w the cycling shoes.  but....

theres a GOOD FEET store minutes from house.  maybe i can ask there.

im actually more concerned about the orthotics for the run.  but i didnt want to take any 'chances'.  my guess is i would feel more 'comfortable' ie not worried about it, if i had something orthotic-y in my cycling shoes rather than nothing.  [probably more 'psychological' than anything]

as far as the TriSpray, ill see about finding some (im sure online, but maybe at store nearby

QUESTION:  DO YOU WEAR SOCKS?

my spin instructor doesnt wear socks for any tri Oly distance and under.  though she said she has gotten blisters.

im not sure im that 'hardcore' as i hate the feeling of my bear feet on my orthotics

oh dear.  im HIGH MAINTENANCE ARENT I?

A HERPOTOLOGIST?

I have in fact been a herpetologist. Not a degree'd one, but one nevertheless. It does go on my resume when applicable. The whole upshot of the experience was "don't eat the newt" and that carrying three adult desert tortoises in a giant sun reflective backpack along with radio tracking equipment while hiking up and down cholla-cactus-infested sand dunes in 120F is, well, cumbersome. Excellent tri training if I do say so myself

I often don't wear socks for Spinning(R) class or short (under 1 hr) bike rides. I've not worn socks on runs before, but my feet were BodyGlided into a slithering slickness.

But I wouldn't recommend doing a tri without socks unless you've actually practiced it in training like that.

Subject: Socks and transition
Hi, Manatees!

Here's my very limited experience with transitions.

Just for the record, I didn't wear socks on the bike portion of my HIM. I trained without 'em. It didn't cause a problem during the race. But for running, I have enough problems with blisters when I do wear socks so I wore them all during training and to race. So you have to put them on sooner or later unless you train to run without. Something I saw on the a BT video on transitions was very helpful concerning socks, if you choose to wear them at any point. Take each sock and roll it down to the toe and put them in your shoes so when you go to put them on, you just roll them right up. Remember, your feet will be wet either from the swim or sweaty from the bike. I'm sure that saved me some time in T2 not to have to struggle with them.

Another tip is to put on really good waterproof sunscreen about 20-30 minutes before you swim. Let someone help you to be sure your back and shoulders are well covered. This is especially important during the bike ride if your trisuit has a racer back. I had aerosol SS that I tried to put on in T1. It was a new can and I didn't take off the lid or line up the arrows on the spray nozzle beforehand. So I struggled trying to get it to spray, and then when I finally did, the wind was blowing so hard that none even got on me. So I had a sunburned back, which is still peeling.

Other than that, practice. I didn't and I'm sure I could have saved a lot of time if I had. Also, practice running with your bike either barefoot or with your cleats on.

Good luck and have fun doing your bricks!

Good morning Manatees!

Well today I am going to get my little self to the pool. That is my goal. And other than the usual twice-daily dog walks, I have nothing else to do today ... so no excuses. ;-)

I'm actually really looking forward to it, and now that I've decided to take 2 weeks or so off running again I'm feeling a lot less pressure.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Yanti - as an aside - I did Green Sea Turtle Rescue and Research in Costa Rica in 2006 ... my experience in a nutshell: stumbling along a Carribbean beach in the dead of night is not nearly as glamourous as Hollywood makes it out to be.
That - and turtles are just awesome.
