OWS update.  After yesterday's less than spectacular effort I was back at it again today.  Much better despite less visibility and a good chop on the water.  Swam at location of race this weekend.  Would swim 50-100 then take a break with gradually increasing distance.  Able to establish a rhythm and more comfortable despite worse conditions.  Feel better about the upcoming race but plan to get back out in the bay 1-2 more times before Saturday.

Yesterday I ended up ditching my bike ride due to weather and tiredness (ended up not raining) - and went for yoga instead.

Today I had a great 10km run. I was even ready to go longer which next week I will be.

And I took the plunge tongiht and signed up for 3 triathlons - 2 sprints and 1 olympic. Now I just have to train my butt off for that olympic.

I will be signing up for more races I just don't know which ones yet.

Melanie - Nothing like having some races on the calendar to get you motivated!  That's one of the reasons that I registered for my 1/2 marathon so early (Philly distance run in September)...on those days that I don't want to run...well, I've already put the money out, so I better get going!

On another note, I've had a really bad week or two.  We had a loss in the family a week or so ago.  My wife's uncle passed away semi-unexpectedly.  It's really thrown us into a funk.  But we have been having a lot of fun remembering and laughing at old Willie stories....He really was a lovable old wack-job!

I'm probably being hypersensitive about this, but between the odd meals at odd times, the take out we've been eating, and missing a few workouts, I've put 5 lbs on and it's really bugging me.  I need to get that removed ASAP.  These eating habits are what caused those extra 45 lbs in the first place.  I don't want to fall into that habit again.   So......

This morning will be my first speed work run in a while - 5 miles total - and tomorrow will be an OWS practice as we'll be visiting friends who live in Rehoboth Beach, DE.  I'll be in the bay in my wetsuit first thing in the morning on Saturday!  Maybe if the weather cooperates, I'll do a 20 mile ride/3 mile run brick on Sunday....

What's everyone else up to this weekend?

Matt

Sorry for the loss in your family Matt.  That is tough but the time spent with the family is much more important than any training you can do!  The weight will come off fast once you get back in a groove.

It will be light training weekend for me.  I leave this afternoon for a campout with my two older sons.  There will be about 50 kids there and it will be a weekend filled with water balloons, water gun fights, and other activities.  Also, not a lot of sleep as it tends to turn into "awww, come on dad, mom won't know that you let me stay up so late!!".  But in reality, mom always knows when we get home on Sunday and everyone is grumpy!!

I may try and get a 15-20 mile ride in on Sunday when we get home.  1st race is a week from Sunday so this is taper time anyway.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Matt-sorry for the loss.  A week or two without training and not eating right are pretty insignificant in the big picture.  Easy to say as I know I would feel the same way you do.  If anything it sounds like you are even more motivated now. Just be careful not to overdo it-an injury at this point would be a huge downer.

Well folks, tomorrow is the day-first tri. Sprint with 600 swim/16.4 bike/ and 3.1 run.  Looks like there are about 70 male firstimers out of about 425 racers.  We are in second to last swim wave so that should be good-not as many folks swimming over me! Did total of 3 OWS this week to prepare-conditions forecast for race look good. A little anxious today but I know I am ready.  Have set some specific goals but dont want to jinx myself at this point.  Will report back sometime tomorrow afternoon.

A question for the veterans-where do you attach the number to your bike?  The number is on a card that folds over so number is visible on both sides.  They included a couple of twist ties.  Do I put on top tube, behind the seat or where.  Have a belt for the run and have already attached the number to it.

Thanks everyone

Randy

Matt - Sorry for your loss. Please don't sweat the eating "stuff" - as long as you are aware of it - you will be fine. Get back on track next week....no worries.

Randy - You can attach either to your top tube or your seat post - you decide. I always attach to my top tube, my husband uses his seat post...GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

4 hr ride for me tomorrow + 20 minute run.....Sunday is a 2 hr ride, then a semi taper for Mooseman next Sunday.....time is flying by!

Thanks guys.  Last week totally sucked.  Willy was the first of that generation to go, and it really affected my MIL and my wife's family.

Anyway, on a happier note, I got into the bay this morning in Rehoboth Beach and had an outstanding swim...figured out that warming up before a race in the water is somthing that I really need to instead of a short run or bike...took a few minutes to get used to the cold water to be able to blow out my nose under water...

Hopefully a 20 mile ride/3 mile run tomorrow...

congrats on everyone starting to get their first OWS of the season done.

Well I finally decided to skip my regular thursday so I could attend my triathlopn brick practise. Unfortunately as I am driving out to the practise it started raining. I am thinking to myself why am I still driving out all this way when it is raining. I went all the way out there, waited 2 minutes and then decided to leave (no one there yet) and go to my meeting. Supposedly more people showed up after I left and they agreed to cancel practise. But we are an eager bunch that we drive to park about (about 15 minutes) knowing that we aren't going to work out. We are all brainwashed I think. So I ended having no workout thursday.

Yesterday I had a wedding to go to so I had no official workout. I did try and dance as much as I could to burn whatever I ate and drank. That was my unoffical workout.

I do plan on going for a 2 hour bike ride later today to make up for my 2 days of no official workouts.

Tomorrow I am going to cheer on some of my friends who are doing their first triathlon of the season or for some of them their life. They will now be able to officially call themselves a triathlete - no more triathlon virgin.

and while they are racing - I am going for a run with a friend.

I hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Well, first one is in the books. Beautiful weather.  600 swim/ 16.4 bike/ 5k. Had set a goal of finishing under 1:30. Time was 1:24:21 good for 2nd out of 65 in male first timers.  Really pleased with how things went-got a bit of a break on the swim.  Had a blast!!!

Swim-this was more like an aqua jog. Low tide so water pretty shallow.  Everyone in my firstimers wave walked/ran at least half.  Penalized the good swimmers and was an advantage for folks like me.  I think I was 12 of 65 out of the water. Will continue to work hard on swimming with lots of ows this summer.

T1-race results said around 4 minutes. UGH! Could not have taken that long.  Lots of room for improvement.

Bike-went well on rolling course. Was only passed by 2 riders on rocket bikes and passed a bunch of folks although first timers were second to last wave -so more people in front than behind.  Averaged 20.8 on new Cervelo P1.  Thats almost 2 mph better than my ride on the course with my road bike with aerobars a week ago.  P1 is Cervelo's entry level tri bike-aluminum frame -been around for years as P2SL.  Huge difference from my Specialized roadie. Love the bike just need to continue to tune the engine.  Bike split was 2 of 65.

T2-better. 1:30+/- Better. Still not sure what happened in T1???

Run-first 1/3 mile is steep uphill.  Walked through water station at top of hill and was really whipped. Started running again and gradually got running legs.  Pushed it over last mile passing a few folks.  Time was around 23:25 for 5k.

Hung around, had some pizza, water a couple of beers and enjoyed the morning.  A great day in Fairhope on Mobile Bay.

Thanks to all for their encouragement

Randy

WTG Randy!  Great job!

Tami - The water was great...It was 66* which is just about what the lake was in my first failed OWS attempt.  Same problem in the beginning, but without the adrenaline of being in a race, I was able to properly warm up and after a few minutes was able to get into a groove and didn't have any problems after that.  The moral of the story is to warm up at the next race in the water and not on the bike or with a short run...

Great job Randy, hope to be posting something positive this time next week after I complete my first ever tri ...yea!\\\

Quick question, what should I be focusing on this final week before the race, remember this is my first time.  I plan on continuing my bike rutine, but cut back on the run and swim a little.  Any suggestions out there?

Congrats Randy

Well today I went to chear some of my teammates on who were doing their first triathlon. I didn't make it intime to speak to some of them before they started the race but I got to see the go in and out of transition. I just have to say that I was glad that I was not racing. I was wearing lots of layers today and I was still cold standing around. I even wore my running gloves. And the wind was insane. I did not want to be in that water today. I did leave for about 30 minutes and went for a quick run. At least I warmed up when I did that.

It was a great experience chearing everyone on. And the look on some of the athletes faces was just inspirational. You can tell for some for some of them it was a dream to do a triathlon with the expressions on their face.

I still have one month to go before my first triathlon race of the season.

Is it a good idea, for race day, to invest in a bike repair kit,  CO2 cart, replacement tube, etc.?

It's a good idea to invest in that stuff regardless!  In my underseat bag, I carry an extra tube, a tube repair kit, co2 inflator and 3 extra co2 tubes, plastic tire levers, a bike multi tool and rubber gloves.  Phone, ID, health insurance card and a little cash go in my jersey pockets for a normal ride, but stayed in the car during races.

well I cancelled my training session yesterday since I was not feeling that great. Today I decided to stay home form work. Although I could have mustered the energy to go, I wanted a day off. I didn't want to get better in 4 days but 1 day. I have arun practise tonight which I am still debating about going to. I want to go. I want the fresh air. But I don't know if I have the energy. It might be one of those things that once I am there I'll be fine.

Plus I am supposed to get some picutures from the race this past weekend that I need to upload to our website.

I'll decide later.

Plus I have a 5km race this weekend so I want to run today.

tire repair kit.....not only invest in those items and carry them with you religiously on training rides and while racing......but also PRACTICE changing flats.....specifically, your back tire. I do time trials in my kitchen practicing changing a flat. That way I know exactly how long it will take me to fix it and my times keep getting better.

There is a good video at expertvillage.com that shows how to change a flat....

he don't forget the safety $20 for the bike bag.....for a gatorade/water, food, post-race beer, cab, or...even a tire!  At a supported ride last year, my friend blew out her tube and tire. We had no credit on us, only my safety $20.  Althought the price was above $20, the LBS with a stand at one of the pit stops finally agreed to take $20 for tube, tire, and labor.  Phew----safety $20 is awesome.

Oh- and at the last triathlon, the safety $20 paid for a post-race beer

WHO'S RACING THIS WEEKEND?

On a serious note...I hurt my calf at a race last Sat. Problem is, I have a big race THIS Sat. So I need some karma sent my way. Its my right calf (in case your karma is L/R specific) and it's a torn medial gastro....something...something...attachment; anyway, it's the bottom/inside of my right calf. Any and all psychic and/or paranormal assistance would be appreciated. thanks. jeff
