michelle - if you have your shoes, your bike and your goggles you have everything you need.

Powertap is similar to a heart rate monitor in that it displays and records how hard you're working.  The technology is based on pressure sensors that measure stress and strain as a result of forces applied on the crank or on the hub of the rear wheel.  It's expensive tech.

For me It's important not to train too hard.  Tools like HRM, GPS and Powertap help me to go as hard as the coach/plan requires but not harder.  When I first started training I was concerned that I would go all out and have a heart attack.  So I used a heart rate monitor to get my heart rate up but not too exceed safe limits.  Remember I was not always fit.  But I am now! wah ha ha. evil grin.

<edit>
Garmin foot pod is compatible with most garmin wrist devices and it tracks your foot speed and cadance.  useful to record speed and distance (indoors) and cadance (everywhere)if you have issues with foot strike or stride length.

Oh I know...I haven't been doing this a long time but long enough to "need" new toys I was just wondering what the powertap and foot pod was for although I know I have no intention of ever getting one. I do use my HRM a lot as it really helps me (as well) know when its time to slow down and i've noticed it helps me after i've been sick to know that i'm not completely back 100%. I have a tendency to go all out even when I should be taking it easy.
Thanks a ton for the tech lesson...Now if I could just learn by osmosis more about my bike than changing the tire ~ kind of like if the whole swimming laps thing could actually work

Morning all!
Thanks for the bike/power explanation Mark! I am not a real numbers person. I have never really trained with a HRM. I have a Garmin 305 but I just prefer RPE.  I am going to start using my HRM this year because I think it will help me with intervals and improve my speed. I had my Garmin for my bike during my IM and I had a second one for the run...but the run Garmin apparently wasnt sitting on the charger and was dead about 15mins into the run. I was really glad I spent most of my training going by RPE Laughing

Yesterday I was able to get out of the house and into the pool. Did some strength training too. Today I hope to go for a short run. It really is quite beautiful here. The trees are covered with ice and it sparkles when the sun comes out.

Wow, everyone is so quiet in here...I hope all is well!

Marianne, i love running when its like that outside. I even have some trax that I acquired when I was stationed in Alaska and I love them. Anyway, i'm glad that you can actually enjoy the snow...even if only in between shovelling

I have plans to get on the trainer again today unless it stops raining as I can't handle riding in both wet and cold.

Oh I forgot to mention the whole water thing ~ I realized as I was heading to bed last night that I didn't get the last of my water in for the day so I guzzled a bunch. Thankfully I wasn't up all night

Another long day at the computer at work. I will be happy when its old hat. Swam this am I really need to get in the pool more. I'm only able to 1/2 of a lap doing the crawl. The whole breathing thing gets in the way. I love the back stroke and side stroke, pretty sure thats not going to get me 1/2 mile in open water. I read a few of the articles last night and they all seem to say the same thing. Get in the water and keep working.

Missed the mark yesterday on the water, better today.

I agree its very quiet around here.

I have been slacking...   I over did it and needed to take a couple extra rest days.  then I donated blood (aphresis and double reds) and didn't have the energy to work out.

BUT!

my lady friend got me a 2.2L jug to help me with my water goal, so I've been doing that for the past couple days.

and I got a first hand report on the Warrior Dash.  It is apparently a rip-roaring good time...

now I just need to be able to do a 5k.  :~)

Terry, swimming is like anything else...the more you do it the easier it gets!!! When I first started swimming I couldnt get from one end of the pool to the other. It took me about 3 months of regular swimming and I was easily able to do 750. Dont get discouraged, just keep at it. There are swim plans here on BT that have good drills to do to help you build endurance.

YAY One Faller...glad you are back. Overdoing it is one of the down falls of doing this sport. You want so much to train and complete your first race. In doing so, you over do it...get sore and/or injured ...it puts you back on the couch. It can be a vicious cycle. Be careful. Its great that you have a supportive partner. It is a HUGE bonus when your family and friends support you doing this sport. Its great that you donated blood!!!BE CERTAIN to DRINK your water over the next few days. Although it doesnt seem like they took a lot of blood it is a decrease in your overall volume and will leave you feeling a little weak until you generate more red blood cells. Also try not to do any speed work over the next week. This type of work inceases oxygen demand and you are low on your oxygen carriers!!!

Michelle I am impressed with all that you are going through that you have been able to train. Training can really help with stress, but its hard to get that foot out the door to start the workout!!!Nice work!!!!

I have to work this weekend...joys of being a nurse! I will train as much as possible this weekend as next week is a couch week while I let my knee heal.

Hi All,
I met a trainer at the gym the other day and he offered me a free session so I did that today. Pretty much a one hour boot camp workout. Kiked my butt! I didn't think I would be able to get my swim workout in after it but I came home had a meal then when back out for the swim. Proud of myself for not giving in to easily.
One Faller- great job on giving blood. I work with the Canadian Blood Services and see first hand the need for more blood donors. Giving double reds will be a stress on your body but just to meet the requirements to give a double means you have a higher than average iron level to begin with. There was actually a thread a few weeks back on how people get through their training and still donate on a regular basis.

Hello to everyone else. Hope everyone is geeting their workouts in. I know I am counting down the days until March when the weather the weather should improve enough to get out on my bike.

Awesome day at work today but man I'm pooped. Need to meet my water challenge between now and the end of the night. Will be at the gym tomorrow and am really excited for some time out of my head.

Tonight is the UFC fight - woot, woot!
Cheers, Julie

Feel under the weather today, everything hurts. Took the day off today. The body says it needs some rest. Hopefully back to it tomorrow.

A trainer is a great way to push yourself one step higher in your training. I have 3 sessions I'm saving for when I feel like I'm not taking it the extra step.

Plus I'm waiting for the ribs to heal. They are much better.

Hi everybody, sorry I've been MIA lately!

I've been still doing the once per week cycling classes. My swim coaching sessions seem to be deteriorating because they keep getting cancelled by the instructors. They always offer to reschedule with another instructor, but I keep thinking consistency is important when doing 1:1 sessions. True to form, my greatest challenge in this sport is scheduling- getting the time to do what needs to get done.

I have decided to do the Shamrock Shuffle 8k April 10 and the Galena Duathlon in May.

Thanks for the suggestions on keeping trainer rides interesting. I need to overhaul that scene because my typical Hulu watching is getting too boring, and with all this the snow, the trainer is becoming indispensable.

Marianne, best wishes for your surgery. You gave a really strong effort on self-healing, but it sounds like surgery is really called for in this case.

Julie- How is your mom doing?

Took yesterday off as I had an out of town funeral to attend and still very sore from the trainer led workout. My arms and legs feel pretty good but my core and my chest are so sore I feel like I have a horrible chest cold! Guess I know where I could use some work.
Hoping to get a spin class tonight. If not will be a run.
Mav- think your surgery is tomorrow- speedy healing.

I think we should post our totals every week!
Bike:38
Run: 5.4
Swim:4200

Even though I am having surgery tomorrow I am going to try and hit the HIM totals. Likely I will have to walk the run!!!!!

Glad everyone is trying to stay positive and train during the "off season". I find this time of year the hardest to stay motivated. When I know I have a race coming, I never miss a workout, but its easy to blow it off this time of year!!!

Tomorrow is my 5 year anniversary of quitting smoking!!!!! I cant believe I smoked ... I find it absolutely disgusting now.

I have been making the water challenge every day and my weight is down...happy with progress on this front!!!

@MAV - I'll be sending my most potent healing vibes to you and wish you a speedy recovery.

@All -  My attempt at balanced training's not working for me.
I find myself slipping back into training my strengths and disrespecting the run.
Results from last week. Swim: 4800, Bike:96.2, and Run: 16
My goals for this week are swim:7500, bike:75 and run:35.

Mav good luck tomorrow and speedy recovery. You know you need to follow your Dr's advice closely for good healing. Great job with the weight loss. I'm going in the other direction. Will try harder with diet this week.

Great numbers posted, makes me jealous. I feel like Thomas the train, I know I can, I know I can.KissLOL.

Heya Onefaller and Marcy ~ it does seem like its been a while since we've "seen" you so it's good to hear from you

Marianne ~ thanks for the kind words. It has been harder than usual to get out the door lately but I know that I will feel tons better once I do!

I am still kicking butt on the water front but my IM needs some serious catch up...

Swim ~ Zip, zero, zilch
Bike ~ 12 miles
Run ~ 5.03 miles

Luckily I have made a vow to take Sammi over to a sitter for a bit each morning so I can get (at least) something in. I am still trying to play catch up on homework and I still have a midterm to take so her nap time is pretty much filled up with that ~ UGGG!

I have a 5k planned this weekend but instead of actually "racing" I asked my hubby to do it with me and I will push Sam in the stroller. He agreed so i'm pretty excited that we will all be doing it together. Next month is my 1/2 mary and there is a .5mile kids fun run so I talked to my hubby about signing up Sam for that and he can run it with her since she screams when she comes to my races and can't go with me...makes me proud that she enjoys being so active!

I'm just the opposite...I find myself running all the time and my swim, well lets just say is sporadic at best (as you can see by my stats!)

Wow, where is everyone today? Don't tell me...everyone is off working towards their IM, right?! Other than that, what is everyone up to?

I am taking Sam to her ballet class then off to swim I go. My shoulder has been bothering me a lot the last few days so it will be interesting to see how it feels doing laps. I guess I should get off my butt and start up with my PT again...I have a love/hate relationship with him and even call him my sadist to which he takes as a compliment! He does more of an ART type PT than traditional but boy does it make my shoulder feel tons better!!

@All - Hope everyone is feeling better.  Todays a great day to feel the energy.

Here's my Tuesday morning ?swim report-?

RTB Master Swim (2600Yds)?
wu: 6x100 Swim?
dr: 8x25 (25Fist,? 25Swim)
ms: 3x500@10:3?0
   3x100@2:10 (5?0Hard, 50Easy)

Honest Workout t?oday.  No reason to draft with just two of us in the lane.  During the 500 I let my friend get to the? ?wall before I left.? ? ?W?e? ?a?r?e? ??e?v?e?n?l?y? ????????matched.  We usually pass?? ?e?a?c?h? ?o?t?h?e?r??? at the center line of the pool.  Easy t?o tell whose slipping.  In the first 500, I just caught her at the 475 turn.  Second set neither of us gave an inch.  Third set I thought she was going to catch me at 400.  Determined not to get caught, I focused on my catch by dropping my finger tips to the bottom of the pool and stayed clear.  Lots of fun.

THanks for posting about Mav.

Completed a 25 minute continuous swim tonight. Felt good but was really having to dodge people. I'm not sure if it was inexperienced swimmer nite or what but there was slow swimmers in the medium and fast lanes and the guards had to keep moving people around.
Trying to get strength training completed on lunch so gave that a whirl today as well.

Hope everyone is well.
