OKAY....regarding the questions of the day.....

Answer to Dud's swim question was primarily for a balanced stroke.  However being able to bilateral breathe is definitely helpful in OWS with chop/ glare issues too!

Answer to my gearing question.....You want to be able to "spin up" the hills as much as possible. Taking a lighter gear but switch before your cadence drops too much.  Climbing with your butt out of the saddle isn't very effective use of the legs.  Mashing gears is also not good because you will feel it on your run!!

Good luck, Chris!

Judi - good question.  I am finding that I mash more than I'd like to on my tri bike.  I'm very good at sitting and spinning on my road bike.  So good that I often pass people who are mashing away and we are using comperable gears at the time.  (I love doing this!) I've been doing it for so many years that my body/muscles are well conditioned to generating good power from a seated position.  Standing feels so much harder to me.

The thing is, on my tri bike, I'm not that good with the gearing yet, so I find myself just judging how long the hill is and if I think I can make it, I mash to the top instead of shifting.  I know it's a really bad thing to do and I need to get more comfortable with the gearing/shifters before my first race (or brick off the tri bike!)!!  (road bike - Ultegra brifters on a triple, tri bike - bar ends on a compact)

I need dry roads, damn it!

IMO  the only reason to learn bilateral breathing is to look out the other side.   In the words of Bob Stocks breath when you want to. You don't regulate your breathing when you run or bike so breath when you want.  It can also be useful when you are in a crowded race and need to breath cause you hugged up with someone.

Judi says I owe a quote of the day.
So as I looked up into the sky with the snow falling I said " If this keeps up it will never come down."

Huge sigh of relief post PT.....they gave it a good evaluation and determined my gastrocs was fine on that leg......she thought perhaps last week she had me do a good bit of plyometric stuff before the run and that was too much on the leg that took so much abuse when the other one was favored.

I can get back on my bike this weekend and run next week.

papson14 - 2011-02-04 1:05 AM Looks like I get to skip a couple of workouts....Brielle (baby to be) sucked up all Mom's fluids so she's being induced.  A couple of days prior to being full term so not a "huge" deal, but we weren't expecting her for another couple of weeks.  I'll keep in touch.

Good luck Chris! ... im sure all will be great ... although I am not sure that is an excuse to miss training LOL

Question of the day (dince Dud thought I meant quote)

How often should you drink water/ nutritional support such as gatorade while riding?  (any ride, not just distance)

Not sure about the water, but on Gatorade or other nutritional support, isn't it that you want to take in about 200 calories an hour?

By the way, these questions are great--I read so much and take so much for granted, I tend to forget the 'whys' or the 'hows' when pressed.  This serves as a good reminder.

Anyone have any good training or race plans this weekend?

I am considering taking a Bikram yoga class with a friend on Sunday.  Hmmmm, hot yoga with hot flashes....not a pleasant thought. BUT, I am trying to be kindler and gentler to my body to avoid the injury rut that plagued me last season.

For water, I'd say approximately a liter per hour no matter what the activity - more if it's hot and less if it's cold, depending on sweat rate.  For other supplements, I don't think they are really necessary unless you plan to workout for more than 90 minutes (again, unless its super hot and you are sweating at a higher than normal rate).

At least, the above has worked for me.  I'm not a big sweater though - so I rarely need electrolytes in liquid form anyway.

I'm racing tomorrow!  5K tomorrow morning.  My first 'real' 5K ever (not as part of a tri or a team event)!  We are expecting a cold rain for weather, so it should be a good race for me.

I'm also going to run 5 miles on Sunday and hopefully get in a bike ride depending on weather.  Oh, and we will likely be hauling 80lb bags of cement for my strength workout.

Good luck Catherine!

Still no sign of the baby's birth in his log....

Answer to the how often do ou take in fluids on the bike  QOTD:  yes, try for 200 cal/hr cause if you are riding hard you will burn over 300/hr.  Every 15-20 minutes some form of liquid (water or rehydration supplement)  If you are a big sweat-er or if it is a really hot day, more.  Doesn't have to be a lot of fluid....cause you don't want to ride feeling bloated or hunting the portapotties (which I have done, was dangerously close to hopping in a cow pasture once!)

I was advised by someone who has done roughly 1023 more tri's than me (roughly) before I did the first one to get most of my hydration in before the race. It is evidently almost impossible to re-hydrate through a race, especially in heat, but you can maintain hydration.

That tri was a sprint, so was told to hydrate a couple of hours before, and just take semi-regular mouthfuls of hydration throughout the bike rather than big long drinks. I was so damn tired that I don't know if it worked or not, but I guess I made it to the end

Since my focus is preparing for a road race in March, it's all about running for me. Two easy-pace runs this weekend, one on Saturday, one on Sunday. I've been reading Jack Daniels' "Running Formula" for the last couple of days and I really like his training plans and suggestions. And I'm planning on not "pigging out" during the Superbowl. Cool
