Hi Everyone!  Just checking in to see how all of the Fink's are doing?

With moving from the UK to the USA in a little under a month I'm finding things a tad difficult at the moment... I cancelled my gym membership about a month and a half ago and now the only pool I have access to is the 20m pool at work (and it's not open early mornings/later in the evenings or on the weekends) and my bike was shipped to the US at the end of April so the only thing I can do is either ride a stationary bike at work, or try to get into one of the 5 spin classes offered which are only 40 minutes long.  I've also got 10 days in Vancouver before moving to the US so I won't even have a pool during that time - though I think there's an acquatic centre within a 30 minute drive from where I'll be staying.

Any ideas or words of wisdom that might help?

Looks like a great opportunity for a month of run focus training. Were still about 6 months out so specific training is still in it's early stages. Use the spin bikes to do some hard interval work, you don't have to do what the spin instructor says to do. Just sit in back and away from the crowd. If you want to get some extra riding in, most places I have been to don't close the studios down with the spin bikes in them. If I have to spin I will usually go at a non class time and I am the only one spinning away for 1-2 hours in a dark room all by myself. As far as swimming? You will have 5 months to worry about that once you get to the states Best of luck with the move.

Agreed.  I wouldn't worry about it this far out.  Cycle when you can but focus mainly on the run.  The goal now is just to build base.  It's all about putting in the easy miles.  You might want to try strapping on a heart rate monitor and just doing high volume of zone 2-3.  This will allow you do put in as much running as you can without over taxing your body.  You'll build a great endurance base this way and will be able to add in race specific sessions once you get settled.

Thanks so much for the replies - I guess I'm a bit of a stickler for sticking to a plan if I've got one, but of course this would be a fantastic time to work on my run, which is definitely the weakest of the 3 for me.  Sadly, my Garmin has already been shipped so I'll just have to go with RPE.

Thanks again!

If you're still in Vancouver on the weekend of Sunday, June 03, 2011, A, head east to Oliver BC and enjoy watching/volunteering at the OliverHalf.  It's a very popular and scenic race in the heart of the Canadian Wine Country.

PS: 6 months and counting down to IMAZ/woot woot!

Sadly I fly into Vancouver on June 4th so I'll miss it - but being a born and raised Vancouverite, rest assured that I'm VERY familiar with Oliver, Osoyoos, Penticton, Naramata, and the whole area... along with a LOT of the wineries in that gorgeous part of the province as well

Got my first OWS in last night and the director hosting the event did IMAZ last year. If you've been reading this whole thread you may remember I had concerns about the water temp, when I signed up I didn't realize the water being that cold, i figured it's AZ it has to be warm right?

I prefer to do most races without wetsuit, I'm never gonna win anything so I'm not worried about the time I lose to those who do. I just enjoy swimming without. Anyways last night was probably my best wetsuit swim ever the water was 65 and didn't feel bad at all, no shock, was easy to get in, get used to and swimmimg, was actually warm while swimming, I can't imagine 60 being that much worse. I still have to train the distance, but if I continue swimmig like I did last night in my wetsuit I'll be fine.

I'm gonna go to as many of these sanctioned OWS swims as I can this year and use the entire hour they give us to get used to swimming that long in the wetsuit, last night was about 30 min worth. I can go an hour plus non-stop in the pool, same thing in OWS sans wetsuit, now that I feel this comfortable it should be a peice of cake.

I picked up one of those from IMSG and they are sweet. As pro Mary Beth Ellis tweeted from IM Texas where she had just picked up one, those are legit bags. Lots of pockets that are actually practical. Definitely a nice piece o' swag.

After seeing your comments post-SG, I was wondering how long it would be before the 140.6 started tugging at you again.

Regarding registration, if you really want in, take the lesson learned from me and don't risk it online if you're able to be on site. I wound up at SG after missing out on AZ registration by 10 seconds or so. I got clear to the last field on the last page, entering the expiration date on my credit card when the form stopped working. I went to the top and saw the message that the event was filled. Major suckage. If I can swing it, I'm going to get there to volunteer so I can be sure of getting in for 2013.

You're not the only one, I hate wetsuits and normally choose races based on water being warm enough not to need one. Guess I'll be wetsuit shopping in the fall...

Saw the backpacks while milling around IM Village this weekend - they are really nice looking!

The new Blueseventy Helix is amazing.  My pool stroke transfers over to it perfectly.  Try one on if you get the chance.

60 is a lot worse, dont fool yourself! But seriously, everyone has different tolerances to cold so you may be fine. I remember last year in the middle of the swim feeling extremely cold, but I tend to be a cold person.

Long brick sat for me. 2:15 on the bike and 40 run. Who needs a napie nap??? Hope everyone's training is going well I'm a but behind but a wife, 3 kids and a job can do that to you. How do you keep you HR down. My plan targeted the run in between 70-75% for me that should be appox 136-145 or so. My ave on the run today was 152 and that was with a 2 min phone call for work. The first half was 145 or so but after the call it spiked even after a conscience effort it was still 150. I think I'm gona take up speed walking...

Going for another run today ahead of the Soldier Field 10-Miler on next Saturday and the Madtown Marathon on Sunday.

That day really is going to suck. I'm undertrained and going to be suffering. Oh well, what's life without a little pain?

For those of us following the Fink plan, 4 weeks are in the books and 26 more to go.  How is training coming along?

I'm feeling pretty good at this point.  I've only missed one of the scheduled workouts.  I've had to rearrange many, but have gotten them in.  I've been comparing my weekly volume/time to my 2010 numbers when I did IMFL.  I can tell that I am improving overall  and that makes me happy.

It's going pretty well over here as well. Volume isn't too much right now, so I'm doing CrossFit a couple days a week as well for now. I'm feeling really good in the pool, starting to get the endurance back up on the bike and running pretty strong (I ran the LA marathon in March, so I am in pretty good shape there.) Happy for a rest day today though!

To compare how is your 30 wk plan volume so far. I am doing the tri fuel plan. Last week was a 11:25 hr week and this week is a 9:25. This is my first run at an IM distance but I don't see how I could fit any crossfit or cross training in unless I added it to my off day. That said I work a lot and have 3 squealers. I'm a bit behind In volume but feeling good and healthy. I realize the individual training sessions are getting longer but if I start going 3 a days my wife is gona flip on the laundry

Week 5 of the BeIronFit Competitive Plan looks like this:

Mon - Rest

Tues - :45 Run / 1:00 Swim (swims are 2500 total in Base Phase)

Wed - Brick: :30 Bike, :15 Run

Thurs - :45 Bike / 1:00 Swim

Fri - 1:00 Run

Sat - 1:45 Bike

Sun - 1:00 Run

I add CrossFit workouts on Wednesday and Friday right now. It's an hour of time, but the actual workout (or WOD) time changes depending on the day. I love it, so I am integrating it and will adjust how/where it fits as I go along in the Fink training.

The Fink plan seems a little light for me right now, and I miss the specificity of the BT workouts I used for the Half (they'd give you some intervals to do or a TT instead of just '1 hr zone 2'). So I'm thinking of switching back to the BT plan when it starts at 20 weeks out. I liked having the workouts uploaded so I could easily check what was on the agenda. Meanwhile, I'm mostly recovered from my marathon- just a couple of little niggles in the right leg. Things are heating up here (PHX), so workouts are moving to the wee hours - ugh!

For another point of comparison, Fink is at around 7-8 hours/week at this point; 2 1-hour swims & the rest pretty evenly split. I've been doing a couple extra hours until the volume gets back up to what I'm used to.

It is nice to see the comparison in plans, but don't get caught up in comparing what you are doing with what others are doing.  Even those of us following the same plan will have different volume of miles and yards due to being faster or slower.  Once you pick a plan that works for you, trust it.  The Fink plan is a little light on volume for me right now as well, but I remember from the first IM how tired I was in the later months of training, so I am enjoying the lighter load for now.

It's also getting hotter here as well (although not as hot as some places).   I'm hoping to avoid early mornings during the week for as long as I can, but I know it's coming at some point.

If you were to survey the fink crowd, I think you would find most of us are adding volume in 1 or 2 of the disciplines.  I'm over way over volume on the bike and swim with 6 bike workouts, and 3-4 swim workouts.  I am getting all of my run workouts in, just barely.  During Base, my concern is getting re-injured running and not getting to the start line in Tempe.

Speak of the devil - Time to go run 0:45@Z2.

That was my biggest hang up I had with the Fi k plan-swimming. I thought it was light throughout the whole program. Plus I thought the swim workouts themselves were over simplified and boring.
