So I haven't really TRI trained in the last couple weeks, but last week I played 3 days of soccer, and yesterday I got in a long, hard 21 miles of mountain biking through hills and mud. I'm banged up, bruised, and hurting today!

Happy New Year!

I'm envious of the mountain biking - I don't get to do that very often.  Banged up, bruised and hurting sounds like a successful ride

brooksinc1976 - 2011-12-31 7:23 PM Well I ended the year being a weenie. As a houston boy 28 degrees at 7000' was night my friend tonight. Stuck in Aspen area for work. I'm going to have to run during the day when it's a whoping 34 degrees. Ha. Happy new year all!

I can think of a lot worse places to be stuck!  Plus, if you weren't stuck you wouldn't have gotten your pic with "fancy pants"

1st race of 2012 is in the books, completed 5k world race for hope today! Finished at 25:20 and thought it could have been much better, but ran into a 40mph wind at the turnaround that really knocked me down! Lost over a minute off the pace on the last mile, good part is my legs felt great and I am back to having no knee pain! Hopefully that sticks around! Now on to the next race in 2 weeks, 8 mile trail run depending on the weather that could be interesting! Happy new year!!!!

You are going to have perfect running weather - lows in the mid 50s, highs in mid 70s! Perfect weather for park going too.

Good luck!

Ann-Marie: I'm enjoying the mountain biking so much. If I don't do much else with this tri training, I will continue with it. I've discovered a new hobby! I don't like riding bikes on the road at all, but get me in the mountains and I'm like a kid again. Laughing

Great starts to the new year, guys! I got in one last round of "Kill The Coach" indoor soccer with the college and high school kids yesterday. I stood back and looked at the kids and thought about how much the sport has given me through them. I watched so many of them grow from little runny nosed elementary kids to young adults in college and post college as lawyers and such! So proud of them all. Cry

OK, so the real training begins. Not sure what's on the books today, but it'll be one or two of the three disciplines.

Have a great evening!

Blanda, there is nothing as rewarding as molding a young mind! Your post definitely brought back memories of coaching club/high school/college volleyball! As for today it was a nice pool workout around 2000 yards... Mostly what I refer to as mid distance sets (400's) with some brief interval stuff at the end... 2 mile easy run after. Good start to the week! It's cold and super windy here in St Louis, not looking forward to longer runs outside :-(

Well my right leg has been bugging me, just below my hip on the outside... I've self diagnosed it as an irritated it band. With that in mind I've decided to keep running, just wheeling back the mileage a bit. Long runs were pushing 7 miles, I'm gonna back those down to 5, and keep the rest between 1.5-3 miles. Today I did 2 miles at a relatively brisk pace... Leg reminded me afterwords to not do that! Lol. How do I treat this thing? Heat or cold? Compression? RICE? It's not "bad" just annoying... Like when I'm putting on pants standing up balancing on that leg irritates it.

Timmay: Sorry about the pain! I'd ice it after my workouts. I hear great things about the foam roller, though I haven't tried it.

I have swim team this evening. I'm nervous. I wish I wasn't having such a hard time with swimming.

I agree with the ice and foam roller. I have had some hamstring and calf problems this year and usually use the roller after a  short warm up or after a run.

X2 for ice and foam roller for the IT band.  Just know that the foam roller can hurt while you are using it.

I'm in full taper mode for my marathon, which is only a week and half away.  Did 4 miles on the treadmill this morning and felt pretty good.

Good luck to Lumber Dad who is going to do his Goofy run this weekend!  Safe travels.

Good luck n.k. and lumber dad in your upcoming races! Yesterday knocked out 2k in speed work in the pool. MS was 10x50 on :50 then 5x100 on 1:40, not ready to shrink the interval yet but maintaining speed longer through the set with 50's around :40, and the 100's coming in around 1:20-1:22... Once I drop a few more tics I'll drop to :45 and 1:30's... Ugh it hurts already! Running has been going better, no roller but have been massaging my it band and using ice post run for a few days... Run today was 3 miles that I felt would be around 11-11:20.. averaged out to sub 10. Another swim tomorrow, and a short run. Weather here was been incredible (I think we broke a record, 63 today in St Louis, I'm sure it will snow by Saturday lol

Timmay: Hope the pain goes away! Keep treating it till it does.

Last couple nights I've had swim team and each night I felt a smidge more comfortable swimming. I'm totally exhausted today. Had only a day's break between last Saturday's epic MTB ride and yesterday's swim. I'm going to rest and hopefully do something light tomorrow before another hard MTB ride on Sunday.

Keep it up, guys!

Well, I completely blew off my morning swim.  Turns out I like sleeping in!  I did get a 5 mile run in yesterday and plan on running about 12 Saturday.  I'll hit the pool after the run, at least that's my usual saturday, and then hope to get back into my normal workout pattern next week.

Happy Friday everyone!

6.5 and change on my run today and kept it under 10min miles. I picked jobs roller last night... Ouch, but it did loosen it up. Even after the run it feels better than it did last week! Might hit a mtb ride tomorrow...

Nicely done on a 6.5 at sub 10/mile.  That is awesome!

I did a 4 miler yesterday and have an 8 miler planned today.  My last 'long' run before next week's marathon.  Getting pretty excited!

Ooh,

can I join in too! I'm the same, had a mentor group and enjoyed that- I'd love some support in staying consistent throughout 2012.

I am in Melbourne Australia- so training is not that hard at the moment- it's usually pretty warm.
I just did my first ocean swim on the weekend- and really enjoyed it! And I do a couple of sprint triathlons each season (have been doing that for the last 3 years). ANd I have my first Oly coming up in October- so need to be consistent towards that.

Anyway, hope I am able to join.

Cheers

I don't see why not!! Knocked down 2200 in the pool this afternoon. 400 wu, 5x100 on 1:40, 10x50 on :50, 5x100 drills, 200 SPL cd (12-14) , short break to run some errands, then a 2.1 mile run... Just finished dinner with a foam roll and ice down of my ITB... I'll be happy when this goes away :-/ where's lumber dad? Anxious to hear about his races!

X2 lumber dad how was the race? Hit the spin class yesterday-and the kids now like the kids zone. Unfortunately, I have snuck Jackson in the pool with me to do laps (he's 3) and finally got busted-ha. He would much rather swim than play with his sisters...
