jcarmody - 2011-12-28 8:36 AM Hilde / Vera happy Birthday.  Mine is 12/30!

That's kind of funny, mine is 12/31- appears we are heavy on the post xmas birthdays in this group!

Louise...happy Birthday to you too....wow...lots of b-day celebrations..cool...

On the bike topic....I think the better you look on a shiny bike...the faster you will go.....This is why Hilde and a few other of the fancy girls match all their $hit....That's my thinking....and the more expensive it is...well damn...you know it's gotta be faster!! haha...  Don't we all wish it were that easy.... Yeah...my engine has much improved over the two years.....I hope to continually get better with smart training and losing some more weight!!!  I'm all for buying the bikes used too.....I would have bought my Tri bike used...but I feel in love with the Look 576 and they aren't as popular as the B16 or P2.....so I had to buy new...I did wait till the 2012 models were making their way in...so I got mine 20% off....that helped some!

WHat's wrong with bra and panties, lol.

Hope the new suit comes soon. I usually arrive without underwear to change in to after (I put the suit on at home under my clothes) but it's sort of technically part of training for the tri right?

haha....I agree....bra and panties would be okay by me....but hell - just go buff....that way you make a big SPLASH!!!  I would cheer you on in my pool....this is why no women swim with me in the pool....they are afraid....LMAO!

sounds like a good day. Have fun at the LBS.

Jen - How short are you? Good luck with the bike.

I am about 5'0"  or so, give or take 3/4 inch depending on how tall I'm standing day to day.  The bike for sale on classified's won't fit me, based on the geometry of the bike for sale (what did we ever do without the internet?). BUT........

So...I went to the LBS to get fitted.  Turns out I was partially right about what size bike I need.  The frame size I need is 45 cm, but because I have the torso and arm length of someone about 3 or 4 inches taller than me (evidently I'm part gorilla), the top tube has to be longer than on most bikes of that size.  The fitter and I looked at the geometry of the used bike I was looking at and determined that it would be the right height, but way too short along the top tube for me.  We looked at some other catalogs and the fitter gave me some suggestions as to which bikes would be good fits for me.

So, I'm wandering around the store after my fit, wondering if I'm really going to have to break down and spring for a custom frame, and I see one of the bikes that I've been looking at online as an option.  In the size I need.  For $1300.  Too rich for my blood.  But wait!  The exact same bike next to it, same color and everything, just a bit bigger.  With a sale tag on it.  So I ask if the shorter one is on sale.  It is.

So, after about 45 minutes getting fitted ON the bike, (turns out I am a bike fitter's worst nightmare), reversing the stem, and putting on new handlebars (the ones on the bike were too narrow), I have a new road bike!

Pictures to come.  But I finally got a road bike.  After 2 years!

Jen, awesome job of snagging a new bike!!!!  Can't wait to see the bike porn....did you start to decide what type of outfit might best accessorize the bike....some new colored tri-top or shorts????  What accent colors can you cue off of....very important stuff...I think Turtle and Hilde can help you for sure on that one..haha...Congrats on the new purchase - very exciting stuff....

Kelly....congrats on signing up for the OLY!!!!! Let the fun begin...lots of good resources in this group to help you along!!!

Ok finally got a useful pic - here's my bike - not sure if it classifies under pron though, lol - way too basic

It has been used though - here's the evidence:

That's a close up of one of the pedals - I started wondering why my foot was starting to hurt on rides a little while ago and looked down to see this - only on that side though so I usually just flip it over and ride that way.

Oh and no matchy matchy stuff - I'm too cheap/poor,lol.

Brand: Malvern Star

Gears: Shimano but I don't really know how to use them right yet - I usually just use the right shifter to change up the numbers (1-5 or6 can't quite remember since I usually sit on 3 with occasional bursts up to 4) and leave the left one (which has notches/lines) on the lowest with some bursts up to the second line.

Still not totally sure what the type is - I looked at the malvern star website and it's either a cruiser or hybrid but I'm not quite sure what that means.

Anyway there it is.

Oh and I think I got this about 18 months ago and it was cheap then $200 but I'm not sure if that's cos it was old stock or the place had officially closed down - the joys of knowing shop owners,

Suzie, you have a bike!  Just keep riding and you will get faster, try and experiment with more gears, ideally your legs should be spinning around pretty fast.  Put it in an easier gear and pedal faster, it will be easier on your legs than riding in a higher gear and having to really push your legs to get your feet around.

I think that you might want to go with just the basic Sprint plan after your base plan as you go for the 12-week plan going into your race.  Running speedwork can be a recipe for injury if your body isn't ready for it.  I just started doing speedwork (interval type, run 1/4 mile fast, jog back and repeat so many times... building from 4x up to 10 although I haven't made it to the full 10!), but only after 2-3 full YEARS of running.  When I could comfortably run 20 miles a week, and then it's only one day, every other week.  The long runs are more important, they really get your body used to going longer, and those are as slow as you want to do them.  Anyway, that's just my 2 cents.

Suzie, I'd like to agree with both of Hilde's points.  I can add what I did to get to my first Tri.  I started out at 300lbs....couldn't walk at 4.0mph on the treadmill without my HR below 150...resting HR of 84....So sadly out of shape.  I used the "Michael Pate's Total Sprint" the plan is free and worked beautifully!!!! Not sure where you are exactly...but that is one option...There is another beginner sprint plan that is good that is free too.  If you are well beyond this...my apologies.

Let me reiterate a bit what Hilde said....go slow...build up to speed and train smart....Lots of zone 1-2 will be great - and also great for fat weight loss....plus the lighter you get the easier everything will be!!  I was not smart last season and ended up hurt for about two months...I didn't have the volume under my belt and tried to run a 5k all out followed by a Tri the next weekend -- that I ran all out.....my right leg was trashed for awhile....didn't listen to my body and was plain stupid...don't follow me..please!!!

Good luck in picking an appropriate plan...and be patient...Rome wasn't built in a day....Plus with a heart transplant....best to be slow and progressive!!!  I look forward to watching you journey!!!  ROCK ON GIRL!!!!

And that's it....Hope you enjoyed seeing my relatively new baby!!!! I see my arm pad is a little lower on one side...gotta correct that!

Happy New Year, everyone!!  Still fighting this nasty cold, boo!  I tried to "flush things out" with a nice little swim this morning.  Tongue out

Then went to test drive some bikes...  So far I'm leaning toward the Specialized Dolce Comp:

The Specialized fit me best.  And it has a red stripe, so it will definitely go faster and I can accessorize with this red accent like Wilson recommended. Red tape on the handlebars as well = fast, fast, fast!! Right?!?

I've convinced myself that I'd be better off with a roadie right now.  Maybe I'll have to upgrade again in a few years for a TT/tri bike, haha!!  Will most likely make the purchase in the next week, woohoo!!

Wilson, seriously dude, you're gonna need a catheter for all that liquid you're carrying on your bike!!  Ah never mind, just pee yourself, I'll be sure to make sure I'm in FRONT of you, we'll let Brad bring up the rear, ha ha!!  You sure had some sexy shots of your girl... Cheryl will be jealous!!  Maybe you should name her the "Slut"... because she keeps coming back for more and will let you ride her whenever you want.... or if that's too graphic, what's a good slutty name?  Candy?  Tiffany?  It sure ain't Hilde, ha ha ha hah a!!!!

Kristen, LOVE the specialized... I've always liked the look of them.  And Wilson is right, red, white and black are easy to match... the neon green thing is HARD.  Love that it already has red bar tape, maybe some red tires would be sexy!!  And with the red, you KNOW you are going to be fast, that's a given!!

Brad, we'll see YOU in 2012, sorry things are moving too fast for you... go use some hair product, you'll feel better....

And believe it or not, I rode my bike today!!!!  No lie... rode 30 miles with Tammy Tucker and her hubby.  (I had an extra 3 miles I had to do while they rested up the road because my Garmin launched and I had to go back to find it, which thankfully I did and it was still working!).  Legs felt pretty good for not riding for 2 months... neck and shoulders were a little unhappy, and I know my butt will be scolding me tomorrow for sure!  But it was a beautiful day for a ride, I think it was over 75 when we finished, a bit of a wind, some rollers but nothing too too hard... let's just say I didn't have to walk, although a few of them I was pretty slow!  Nice to get some miles under my belt again, and that was just enough to get some motivation going.

Wilson, love the pics!  Jealous of the tri bike, but that'll have to wait for me for a while.  I do have the little bento box on mine.  Love it for the fuel (or cell phone or both).  I've been wondering about fluids on a HIM.  The extra cages might be a good idea.  I usually ride long with a camelbak but how would I refill it if I needed to?  I see on the map of my race that there are several water spots for the bike.  I wonder how that works.  Besides, I forgot that my "bladder" for my pack had some left over gatorade in it -- can you say nasty mold?  So I threw it away and now need a new one.

Turtle who Tris - 2011-12-29 3:53 PM

I also registered for my first Oly tri--YIKES!! I can't believe I'm actually going to do this.  It's the New Jersey State Triathlon and it is on 7/22/12.  Can you look forward to and dread something at the same time??  For anyone who has completed an Oly before, is there a significant difference in how to prepare for a race of this length compared to a Sprint?  I will have a whole bunch of questions I'm sure as I get into this.

Hope everyone is having a great day, and I'll check back in tomorrow.

-Kelly

Congrats Kelly on signing up for the Oly!  I had originally hoped to do an Oly this next season, but then chickened out and am waiting another season.  But, I'm extra excited that you are taking the plunge!

hildekq - 2011-12-30 8:47 AM Oh I forgot to add... on training plans... I've found that for me, the training plans seem to be enough to FINISH the race, but not necessarily make you competitive for the bling (ie AG awards).  BUT, if you pick a plan for the next distance up, such as an Oly plan to train for a sprint, a HIM plan to train for an Oly... you will be better prepared.  Of course, you do have to have the base fitness to start the plan so if you are just coming back or just starting out, go with an easier plan.  And because the plan will be for a greater distance race, you can fudge it a bit if you are not feeling it and still get the benefits if that makes sense.  Now saying that, I'm not sure that the crazies that are planning for HIM's would want to follow the FULL IM plan, because that doesn't leave you much of a life unless you are fortunate enough not to have to have a job, but .... well you know what I mean.  And for you full out insane people planning an Ironman, seek medical help...

I'm going to second all of this.  I think on the BT beginner plans they say that you should be able to finish (but that might mean walking) the race, but more of a BOP with the plan.  I've used the method of training with the next plan up (oly for sprint, etc.) and have found it to work well.

NIIIICE BIKE PORN Wilson!! I see a couple gadgets I'd like to get for my husband that are on your bike, like the MAN seat for your "junk" and the water bottle holders behind the seat. He's been looking for some that don't cost half an arm....still looking! That wouldn't work for me since I'd probably FALL OVER trying to get my water bottle out or back in the doggone thing!

Looking forward to meeting your crazy self at Waco!!

Wilson - nice bike. Especially with all the pimping

K - Nice bike. Red always goes faster

Oh and my bike does not have a name - a) never knew I was meant to b) not really sure she's snazzy enough for one, lol.

Melanie - I find I like knowing what is coming up etc hence why I follow plans but I usually end up tweaking and frankenplanning too - combining a few different plans to find something that works well.

E.g - last time I did c25k I added the HH novice 5k LR's and this time I've tweaked month 1 of the c25k program so I'm actually doing some running before the official plan starts it and franken planning that with the beginner exercise program to get in proper tri training but I'll probably add some swimming earlier than the plan does so I can work up to that level again since I stopped being consistent and lost all my endurance there

Melanie, I have only ever followed training plans when marathon training.  Otherwise, I just get in the routine.

Wilson, I just grabbed a drink of water and came back to my husband drooling over your bike photos.  Oh well, at least he's drooling over the bike pics rather than the fat-man-eating-grapes picture.

Louise, Have a great birthday!

Kristen, That looks like a great bike!  And I agree that it will be exceptionally speedy with the red stripeSmile

Hilde, Nice job on the epic bike ride today!

Everyone, have a fabulous and safe New Year's Eve!

I've been doing a BT Winter Maint/Prep Plan (Oly/HIM maintenance) and then 20 weeks before my HIM I'll be doing the BT 20 week HIM plan.  In the past I completed the 22 weeks Michael Pates Sprint Tri plan that I mentioned to Suzie.  I love having a plan - makes it easy for me and I'm much more disciplined than without!!!

Erin, glad you husband liked bike porn..haha...and if he'd been drooling over my nasty man post....We'll you'd be paying for con selling not bike gear..haha....Whew...good for you!

TTucker, the rear mounted cages are from X-lab and cost me $50....about the same as the lower level Profile Design - but I liked the mounting system on the X-Lab so thought I'd give them a try. The bike bag was also included in that system.  And with the x-lab design the two cages aren't linked....so you can run one if you want.  The install is super easy!

Hilde, I know that's a lot of water...I love water and find that 48oz will only get me about 25-30 miles....at 50 miles or so I used the entire 96oz....or 4 bottles....So I thought that'd be a good idea and I don't have to plan a stop for water.  Isn't your aerobar system 60 oz or something like that??  My other option was to do like Peggy and get a Camelbak 100 oz system.  We'll see how I like the rear mounted stuff.....Time will tell.
