Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Generic - I can relate to the need to lose a few pounds before buying a swimsuit. I couldn't bring myself to buy one of the compression fit, mid thigh length bathing suits when I tried one on. It was too hard to imagine going into the pool wearing one that makes me look like a beluga whale. Gene (Sementi) You're right. I hadn't thought about the "New Years Resolutioners" at the pool and my gym. I'm a shy swimmer (somewhat competent beginner) - find it hard to start in a lane unless its empty - but I am determined enough to make myself get in somewhere. Just not looking forward to dealing with people who don't know pool etiquette. Junthank - I'll check out the site you recommended in a few minutes and you're the second to recommend a Garmin 305. I'll start looking for one. IM Canada gets a lot of US participants. This last year there were almost 400 from California alone. It is sure amazing to be involved in any way. My wife and grandson volunteered with me for 5 days this year and loved it - can't wait for 2012 and hope to tri it in 2013 if all goes according to plan. On a more exciting note I just registered for my very first event. A Granfondo in Penticton for July 8th (160K). We're expecting about 2,000 entrants. I intend to participate in a Duathlon in May and an Olympic event in Oliver on June 17th but I haven't registered for them yet.

Giro Selector Helmet! A trainer (the one I was using was borrowed) Spinervals DVD Road ID membership & Visor & Hat Some new Running clothes and much needed socks. However all of this was offset by the amount of candy that was also included haha. Well going to make use of the trainer now. Merry Christmas Everyone! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nothing tri specific for Christmas but we had decided to go low key anyway. We visited my Mom in Kansas and burned up some old ammunition my grandfather had accumulated over the years-made sure all the guns still did something. I just registered for my first Sprint of 2012 in March-The Mean Green Sprint at UNT in Denton. That race will during an important build phase since I set my sights on Kansas 70.3 in June. There are the usual collection of running events, they never really stop around here. I will probably wait till 1/21 for the Resolution 10k. Cheering my wife on 12/31 as she (probably) walks her marathon in Allen Texas. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Jeff - Kansas 70.3 in June, eh? I looked at that one and need to mosey on over to the race reports and see what people say about the heat (and wind). I'd love to try that one for my first HIM, but I absolutely hate the heat and Kansas can get just as hot as OK and TX in the summer. Have you heard good things about it? So super cool that your wife is running a marathon on NYE. Is it her first? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello All, Well it looks like some of you received some nice gifts for Christmas. Me I received 0. Me and the wife have not exchanged gifts in a long time. We thought we could use the extra $ to spend on the kids so they can have a nice one. To anyone that can reply - Question on HR. I know Steve and one other commented about seeing how fast your HR drops after the training. I was wondering, do I need to wait till it drops to a certain bpm and log the time it took to get to that point or give a cut off time (Do I say wait 10 minutes and see what the bpm is and everytime I run see what the bpm is after 10 minutes, hoping that it will be going down over time). Gene - Sorry to hear about your fall, I hope you are doing better. ** Forgot who brought up the discussion about wearing the tri shorts or something until you lost a few pounds. I know what you mean. Last year I wore tri shorts, but I also wore a blue nike swim trunks over the tri suit (from start to finish of the races) oh and I plan to do it again this year. Until I drop the unwanted 65 lbs that I keep around me, it will be shorts over the tri shorts.

It can be windy in Kansas but it's pretty much just like Texas or Oklahoma that time of year. |

I wouldn't track that piece of data George unless you were specifically worried about it or just curious. Obviously if recovery time improves for a given effort then it can be said you are fitter-however if you notice an increase then it could foretell a bout of over training or even an illness. Essentially you want to know how long it takes for your HR to get back to whatever your standing/sitting around HR is. I just go by feeling-how long does it "feel like" it is taking? Yesterday I wake up and it is mid 50's this morning low 30's, I guess tomorrow it will be in the 60's. No wonder I cannot get healthy and I walk around with sinus problems. Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GANG!! I'm back.....and I see there's been a wee bit of back-and-forth in the past five days. Ack! Actually, I knew that when I breiefly checked on the 25th, I guess it was, but both then and now I haven't really studied what all has been said. So, I have my work cut out for me! I will get to this over a few stints between now and ................. whenever I get caught up. (I hope this will be by tonight. Soon, I am off to Ottawa (weather permitting) for a Yoga calss and a swim. This'll be good, as aside from a ton of walking while in NYC, I've done nothing by way of fitness; I'm feeling slightly soft and expanded! Got in about 1 a.m., and then had to shovel a lot of heavy, wet stuff in prep of about six inches today. Not how I wanted to settle in, shoveling from about 1:40-2:00 in the wee hours. But, it's done, and I don't have to worry about backbreakingly heavy shovelfuls! Onwards?? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yo! I see posts on tri-realtred gifts, and I can add my two-cents to that. I treated myself to a new wetsuit top, which was at Jane's apt when I got there. It's a DeSoto (of course), and will be a welcome replacement for my previous top, which surprisingly made it through this past season. It features arms with 5mm of neoprene, as opposed to 2 or 3 as in previous of their tops, so that will take some getting used to. I have scrawny arms, though, so that added rubber should effectively increase my forearm "bulk", thus adding to the surface area of my pulling surface. That's the hope! Lynn never gets me any tri-stuff, partly because she doesn't know what I wnat/need, which is mostly because I don't tell her, because then she would know how much I spend -- and that might have disastrous consequences!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ove the past few years, i have tried (and largely succeeded) to get less "stuff", relying on what I already have and avoiding what I don't 97% need. This has been a good policy, asllowing me to avoid massive amounts of guilt, and feel righteous at the same time. Win-win!!! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() MATT - Have you posted twice in my absence? Two is what I have found, anyhow! Your approach of hjust doing something is a good way to handle an offseason, and how you have augmented your efforts is even better. Many times, when I have felt "flat", it's been enough to get myself out the door....and then I see what add-ons I feel up to tackling. I often surprise myself at how quickly I dump the funk and become productive, and the same seems to be happening for you. Nice to hear the swimming feels eaier than you maybe feared, and as for looking good in the swim wear, well, most of us secretely or not-so-secretelt lust after soemthing that evn remotely approximates a "beach body", so you are hardly alone in your self-image whilst clad in swim bottoms! Finally, great run, being relaxed and manageable. Relaxed is good, manageable is even better! Eight or nine miles --- here you come?!? |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JOANNE - I see your Newton post was in reponse to Sarah and barefoot running, and I will respond to that -- not that I ahve much to say other than I have been in Newtons since Nov '07. They have been phenomental for me, although there were several rough months of plantar fasciitis problems due to me not being smarter about breaking them in (or breaking ME into THEM!). It sounds like you are being characteristically wise in wearing them breiefly and then going back to your older shoes. I will, however, think about what you're saying about your toes, and any other breaking-in thoughts I have. I will say that they are not necessarily for everyone, or maybe another way to say that is that many, many people need to really take their time with them. Give me a few days with this topic, and I haven't come back with more thoughts -- rattle my cage some! Thanks for remembering my California questions, and I'm still open to any suggestions. I can't remember what all I said, other than maybe a brief outline of where we would be and a general comment that we tend to eschew "standard" touristy spots. More on that later, too! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SARAH - I haven't done any running that is truly either barefoot or ultra-minimalistic, with Newtons being the closest to either of thsoe.....ideals? My feet are very, very beaten-up, and I fear them becoming even more so unless there is some layer of protection between my feet and the ground. The biggest concern is with neuromas, as it wouldn't take much to get one going, I fear. And with Newtons, my neuroma temdencies mostly vanish; I think the four "lugs" on the soles serve to separate my metatarsals enough so they don't compress to cause a neuroma (or two, or three.....). All that said, i think there are rgeat reasons for most people to play around with becoming more minimalistic in their shoewear. I love the lightness, and also appreciate the very low heel-drop ratio; I can't see EVER going back to a shoe with a built-up heel. As you no doubt know, we humans were never heel-strikers back in the day when we ran barefoot, and if we run barefoot tomorrow, thsoe heels won't touch the ground -- not even brushingly, which happens even with shoes such as Newtons. If you were ever to try a pair of Newtons, you would almost certainly feel how they "encourage" a more midfooted or forefooted running style. It;s the darnedest thing, how they almost automatically "fulcrum" soemone into a more forward-based running position. The caveat to that, however, is that initially it can wreak havoc on one's claves......but that's where the recommended gentle break-in process comes in handy. But even in something other than Newtons, transitioning to a wither a forefoot- or midfoot-strike can bother the calves lots, so tinkering with your running style should be done with great care and patience. THAT sauid, though, and I will tell you that what I did to my running technique a few years ago made a huge difference in my running abilities, or maybe a better way to say it is that it worked to increase the life expectancy of being a strong runner. So, despite the various setbacks along the way, it was all well worth it for me!! ![]() ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JEEFTX - Won't it be nice for you if those pool improvements are permanent?! Pool-swimming can be a bit of a trial anyhow, without added health-related concerns. Here's to the porper ventilation of your pool! And did you manage to get in the bike and run, too? If so, well done on a "triple"!!! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok - the 22 people are gone (except for the ones who live here), the house is cleaned up, and the emails sent listing all the stuff that was left behind that I don't know who owns. I'm ready to concentrate on triathlon training. History: I am a 65 yo female, retired, married, one adult daughter, and live in north-central Minnesota. I was a couch potato until the age of 57. Started running using the "Couch to 5k" program. Ran the 2007 Twin Cities Marathon. Tore my miniscus the next year and had surgery. My surgeon told me to run less but said sprint triathlons would be ok. I learned the front crawl and bought a road bike. 3 seasons of triathlon. I asked my surgeon if I could try a 1/2 Ironman and she said it might be a risk but go-ahead so last summer I completed my 1st HIM (Racine 70.3). 2012 races planned so far: January 13-15 Bermuda Triangle Challenge (in Bermuda - whoopee) 3 races in 3 days, 1 mile on Friday, 10k on Saturday, and 1/2 marathon (me) or full marathon (my daughter and a friend) on Sunday August 26 - SuperiorMan HIM in Duluth,MN. This is a new HIM and registration just opened and I signed up because the 1st 75 slots were $99 + USAT (darn cheap for an HIM). The swim is in Lake Superior - they ferry you out to a ship and you jump in and swim a straight line to shore - sounds pretty cool.
I'll be able to keep up with the forum now and wish all of you good luck with your training. Denise |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() HOKIEJEFF - Nice haul -- almost enough so that I wonder if you are outfitting yourself, or building inventory for a tri store! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() DENISE - 22 people.....and I wasn't invited? Sheesh! Pretty fine race sched you have there! It may look like a mere two entries, but the fine print shows a very cool 3-race thingie in Bermuda (will I be invited to that one???), and a brand new HIM with the highly memorable swim start. Cool beans! Last season saw lotsalotsalotsa races that were wetsuit-illegal, but I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that Superiorman WILL indeed be wetsuit-legal. Call it a hunch......... ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SARAH - Lynn seldom notices the chlorine on my person, and mostly neither do I. Granted, it took many years to get to this point where I am oblivious to it, but when you get there yourself, the whole world will seem much rosier (even if you don't actually smell rosier yourself). That said, I do feel that I have to apologize to people who have to be near me post-swim -- physiotherapists, dentists, Yoga folks, etc. I guess I just don't want them to think I am emitting some strange form of old-man odor! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JOHANNE - I should've scouted further afield when I posted to you earlier today, and could've done it all at once. Oh, well. This past season was my first in forever that I didn't lose a single toenail. I'm not sure what the secret was to that "success", but maybe no more than reduced volume and intensity. Or, maybe, I just kind of figured out how to run while protecting my toes more successfully. Whatever it is, I'll take it! I suspect you've read that some ultra-runner solve the problem bby having all their toenails permanently removed. How's that for hard-core?? Good god almighty!!! As for the bunion and surgery, here's what I sort of know: (1) I had a bunion problem about 15 months ago, and my sports doc was very adament that I do not, not,NOT want to subject myself to bunion surgery. Notr only is it very painful, but can involve the insertion of a metal bar or something that can be a problem for years. (2) Jane's fiancee's mom had bunion surgery last spring, and spent months moving about on a manual scooter-type thing. It seemed to be a lengthy recovery for her.........although she is contemplating having the other foot done. (3) Looking at feet in my Yoga classes, my bunion (left foot) is relatively small, or at least less protrusive than many. I think my doctor was trying to make that point to me, that while mine might've hurt a fair bit, in the grand scheme of things it was quite minor. (4) That soft side panel in the Newtons sits pretty much perfectly over the bunion, so it couldn't have a more gentle surface to poke against. But, i guess there is a decent chance that your bunions don't line up as nicely as mine do with that giving meshy panel! |

Gross! I agree about the bunion sx in my case. I would try anything rather then have it. I'm really happy that so far I've been able to avoid it. Yes, I'm going to give the Newtons another try. I've had the same toe pain occasionally in my Brooks so I'm hoping it's not the Newtons. I think I'll try walking in them too and see if I can adapt to them that way. I'm back from 3 days away for a mini reunion with my husband's side of the family. We had a great time together. A few more days of festivities and life should get back to normal. My long run this week is 20 miles and I think I'm going to do it Friday so I can enjoy New Year's Eve and day There's a lot of good posts to catch up on. I think this is going to be a really good group. Good, good experience and info out there! 2012 here we come! Johanne |
