That is silly that they didn't let you in. I was a swim coach and I would pair less experienced swimmers with the experienced swimmers. It was amazing how much the weaker swimmers caught on and improved. Most of the time they would improve faster that way than with individual coaching from me. But that is just my 2 cents!

Hopefully they will let you into the other class! Good Luck!!!

Well yesterday I finally got to go to the gym! Hooray! First time since the fire. I did a 30 minute bike and a 50 minute swim. Everything felt great.

However, I was going to run this morning but my left big toe was killing me. I cannot put any weight on it and I am currently walking on the outside part of my foot to avoid the pain. I have no idea what to do I am going to try and elevate it tonight and put some ice on it. It is a little swollen and it has small bruise kind of where the toe and the foot join. Hopefully it will be much better by tomorrow. I am going to continue taking it easy tonight and tomorrow and see how it feels on Monday so I can get back to running.

I may try to swim and bike with some strength and core training tomorrow. We will see.

I am really worried about it because I have a half marathon next Sunday.

Ugh, 2012 is not starting off too well for me

Lovey - 2012-01-07 3:57 PM I got into the Development Masters Swim class! Yeah! My first class was this morning at 6am and runs for an hour. It was a good workout. My running group starts at 7am but I had to start a little later due to the swim class. I ran about 5 and a half miles afterwards. It was even slower than my slow run. HOWEVER, I kept running and I could breathe. In the past, running after a swim was almost impossible because I felt like I couldn't catch a breath. Great morning workout. Have to decide what i want to do tomorrow morning. I haven't pick or settle on a training plan yet. How many of you use the BT training plans? Last year, I combined Hal Higdon half marathon and the Zero to 1 mileprogram together then added in biking in the free days. Still figuring it out. Lovey

Congrats on getting into the class, and the improvements you've been seeing in your running!

I tend to use the BT training plans. They help me stay focused, and definitely prepare me for the race.

Is everything taken care of from the fire?

Yesterday was beautiful here. I got in a 4.15 mile run outside. It's the longest I've done in a while, and it had some nice hills. My splits were 30 seconds faster than last saturdays run (that was shorter and had no hills). So, I'm happy with that.

Today, we're taking the kids to see the Muppet movie! Has anyone seen it yet?

Nice job on the run, Heidi.

We haven't seen the movie yet, although Kids XM was really pushing the music while we were on vacation (almost 5000 miles in the car means a lot of Absolutely Mindy). Let us know what you think about it.

We may get a little snow/ice/rain today, which I guess will be okay, but I've enjoyed the 50 degree temperatures.

I'm hoping for a 5-6 mile run this afternoon, and I need to get back on the trainer. Swimming starts tomorrow (I hope). I meant to say in my previous post that the pool will not be open at noon.  I have my day structured around that noon swim, so doing it early morning or after work is going to take some adjustments to my thinking.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day today.

Jenny, how did the weekend go. You had a bit of a list between spin class, swimming, etc. I'm sure you had a great time.

Sarah, keep going on the bike and swim. Nice to hear that it was good, even with the time off. Do you know what is up with the toe?

Nice running, Heidi. Cool that you were able to slice off 30 secs per.

Felicia, I hope you get your run in. 50* is nice running weather, snow/ice/rain, not so much!

I got in my 7 miles this morning, it was a sunny 65*, which means more sweating. And chafing. I had no shirt on by the end, and that isn't a pretty sight. But it is done and I am off to get the leaves off the lawn.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Beautiful warm weekend up here in CT.  Had to work on the mountain Saturday, but I'll take a day skiing without my incredibly heavy jacket any day!   Made sure I got out for a 6 miler this morning.  Working on slowing my pace from last year and really take it slow on my long runs as to avoid injury and burn-out.  Felt great..dusted off the garmin last night and got everything ready for the new training season.

Early swim tomorrow and then a ride on the trainer.

Everyone have a great week!

No movie for us today! My little guy woke up with a fever at 6 AM. Had ibuprofen and fell back asleep until 11 AM. He's spent the day on the couch, watching videos.

I bought a HRM today. I got the New Balance N4- designed for women. It got good reviews, but wasn't very expensive. Does any one have any experience with these?

Hey everyone...hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I had an interesting run today...I had intended to do my long run of 8-10 miles but I felt so great that I did 13.1. That's the longest that I have ever run, in addition to my one and only half marathon in November. I also took 13 minutes off of my half marathon time...so I'm pretty jazzed! The amazing part of it is that I decided to skip out on lunch at a restaurant to go for a run...and I never pass up food! What's wrong with me! LOL

Sorry to hear about your little guy...seems like all three of mine have come down with something at some point this winter.

How warm was it on the slopes? The ski resorts here are having a hard time making enough snow, and the upper lifts aren't open at all at most of the resorts. It has been a really warm, dry 6 weeks in Utah.

Whew! I think I am well on my way to an entire page of my own posts. LOL.

I am so glad to hear that everyone is doing well getting their workouts in, or picking a training plan. I am struggling with that. I had an arm/shoulder injury about a year ago, and it has recently flared, so I've been going to physical therapy again. Tomorrow I get to call around and find a new sports med doc/surgeon to get a second oppinion and hopefully an MRI as well. So, the shoulder issues are making swimming difficult. And biking, and well, even walking. I feel like I should tape my arm to my side and just GO. lol. Seriously though, I am able to do quite a bit, I just get these random twinges that make me unable to use my arm for a few minutes. I was surprised that the pushups at boot camp didn't hurt (until I had done about 30), but I have a hard time wiping off my kitchen counter without hurting myself. So. Frustrating.

I had a great workout yesterday morning. However, yesterday evening from 5-7p, I had to take my 13 year old to part 1 of 2 youtgh gym certification program.. It is required at my gym for them to use the equipment.

Since they were were going over strength machines mostly, I decided to hop on the hip adductor, hip abductor and calf raises.
Since last night, the outside of my left knee gets a sharp pain whenever I bend it all the way.

DARN! DARN! DARN! I told myself I was easing in gently but did I listen, nnnoooooo!!

I have my first bike training in the morning and I am worried I may not be able to do it.
This is an 8-week paid training program with no refunds.

I plan to ice it tonight or do you think a heating pad would be better? In the past, I have always used ice for injuries.
I rested today instead of doing my planned short run.

Lovey

Oh no! Ice for the first 24-48 hours. Elevate, gentle stretches of hips, quads, calves, glutes, and hamstrings. Do you have a foam roller?

eta: don't beat yourself up too much. It will all be ok.

I usually use Body Glide. I had some on, but it seems like anything over 1 hour and it is useless.

3 miler at 5:00 am this morning. Pretty quick (for me). I love the beauty of 5:00 am, so peaceful with a full moon this morning. It is really nice.

Enjoy the week. Train hard, train smarter!

Hey Guys! I hope everyone had a good weekend! Sorry I wasn't around to post much...

I got my spin classes in on Saturday and a run on Sunday. I had hoped to swim over the weekend, but it didn't happen... We DID, however, manage to get all the Christmas decorations put away... Always a little sad to see them go, but on the other hand, nice to get the house back to "normal".

News from my parents is good - my step-mom is doing much better, and they hope to release her from the hospital early this week. Dad says she's still pretty weak, though, and it will likely take her a while to get some of her strength back. I wish they were closer so I could help out more...

----------

A few replies to some of the weekend posts:

Tracy - Hooray for starting the new Master's class and sorry to hear your knee is bothering you !! Take it easy for a few days - are you icing it? I hope it feels better soon... It sounds like you have access to a pool - you might consider replacing some or all of your runs with aquajogging for a while until your knee feels better. I may be doing that myself - I've been having some minor heel pain lately (bursitis, I think) and would like to help it resolve before training really begins to pick up for me....

Maria - Enjoy your taper, and good luck with the Marathon! Can't wait to hear how it goes!

Felicia - Good job getting back on track with your running! How did it go over the weekend?

Sarah - How's your foot feeling?? I hope it feels better for your half-marathon this weekend!!

Heidi - Hope your little guy is feeling better...

Chris - Nice run - sorry about the chaffing -- ouch!!

Maggie - How was the skiing? It's been so warm here so far this winter that we haven't really even attempted it yet. My son went skiing with his scout troop over the weekend. They had a good time, but it sounds like conditions were not so great - mashed potato snow...

Karl - Wow! A 13 minute improvement over your HM time is huge! Isn't it nice to see when your hard work pays off? Keep up the good work!

Amy - Sorry to hear about your shoulder - that must be frustrating!! I hope you find a good sports med doc to help you with it. Let us know how it goes!!

----------

As for me, I'm trying now to work out what kind of general schedule will work out best for me when I officially begin IM training in a few weeks. I will be incorporating elements of the Don Fink's "Be Iron Fit" and Matt Fitzgerald's "Essential Week-by-Week Training Guide", but I will switch days around to fit my schedule. My goal is to try and fit in 5 runs, 4 bikes, and 3 swims per week (most weeks - I won't sweat it too much if I need to miss a session here or there) - I just need to figure out how best to fit them into the schedule. For now, I'm thinking it may be:

Monday - Bike/Run
Tuesday - Run/Swim
Wednesday - Bike (easy)/Run (long)
Thursday - Swim/Bike (spin)
Friday - Run/Swim
Saturday - Bike (spin)
Sunday - Run

I'll try that out for a week or two and see how it goes... That means two-a-days M-F, but leaves my weekends more open for Family stuff. I may need to readjust that schedule, though two-a-days 5 days in a row per week might be tough... I may also be replacing a few run sessions per week with aqua-jogging. I've been having some minor heel pain lately (bursitis, I think) and I would like to help that resolve before training really picks up.

Happy Monday Morning all.  Hope everyone had a good weekend.  We had a really nice weekend up here in NH (for January).  I was able to get out on a 4.3 mile run on Saturday.  Was ecstatic about it because at this time last year, I couldn't do more than a 1 mile run on the treadmill let along anything outdoors with hills.

Also got my wetsuit on Saturday as well.  Got a great deal through the website bonktown.com.  It is one of those deal a day sites.  This one focuses on Triathlon gear.  Recommend taking a look if you are looking for anything in particular.

Have a great week of training everyone!

Jenny -- I'm glad to hear that your stepmom is doing better. That training schedule looks intense, but I did many two-a-days in the spring and summer last year. I really liked it. In fact, during spring break last year, I trained three times a day -- morning, lunch, late afternoon. It felt awesome.

I ended up not swimming this morning. I didn't wake up in time, first of all, but second, my sinuses are still not quite right. I decided the water would just complicate things for me, so I'm going to give it a couple more days.

I hope everyone has a great day today. It's cold out there this morning for us, but the expected high is 56, so I can't complain too much about that. :-)
