I am just looking forward to most of my races this year.   We are team targeting El Reno Oly and Redman HIM.    Might go race down in Texas again, they hosted a great race.

Jimmy where are you in Texas again?   We will come down and race in Dallas a few times this year.   Hope we can join you in a race sometime.

What's in my Avatar, tri shorts and tri top, tri top has pockets in back.  I'm thinking about a tri suit for this year.  My tri tops are all short so my skin is showing between the top and bottom at times.  I heard there are some tops that are longer.

Then you're at risk for the tramp stamp sunburn! I've had quite a few of those...

My TYR top is fairly long. Have you checked those out yet? I ended up buying 3 tops from SwimOutlet.com to try them on, and I returned two. Probably lost about $4 in shipping, but I got to try on a much bigger selection than I could find in stores around here. You can do that from anywhere with a good return policy. Just make sure you don't keep them all!

I've considered the one-piece, but I'm not sure how I feel about it. It could work...

I'm usually in tri shorts and a top. Usually a visor or hat for the run!

I currently wear road cycling shoes, but I've been thinking about tri-specific ones. Anyone use those? How do they work for you?

I have only done one event and it was an Olympic distance. I wore a cycling bib and an under armor sleeveless top(whats on my profile picture.

I have been thinking about this quite a bit as to what to wear for a HIM. I have been thinking about ordering a one piece tri suit, but have been concerned about the fit etc.

Since I live in a small town, there are no options for shopping and trying on tri clothing. Next week I am going to Richmond and may find a place to try on some tops etc.

I hope you can find a tri store or two in Richmond! Ask around on the VA State forum if you want recommendations. Someone should be able to help you out!

Why I like the shami in the Zoot shorts,  Zoot shoes they are light and comfortable without socks.   Xterra wetsuit- it was on sale, but turned out great.

Sunscreen,  I dont like to burn but the funny tan lines are great.

Did you find the right set-up through trial and error? Did you research things first and find that they tended to work out?

I've worn a few different things, and it's been mostly trial an error.

Shorts I love to ride in might chafe while running.

Shoes I love to run in might retain too much water!

Very trial and error.   first shorts I wore were great in short distance as distance grew the pad did not feel good.   Shoes changed the most due to water retension and wieght.   Then I needed a shoe to be light and hold up for long races.    I only where my zoots for race day.

On I side not I worry about some people that are jumping up to big goals with only a few races.  I still learn something from every race and the experience is great.    if you are doing a Half with only a few races under you belt really try to simulate some race situations with gear and especially nutrition.   I have bonked a race on pour race nutrition plans.  That is the most disappointing when you know training was good and poor planning blows you up.   Ok I am stepping down from the soap box.   Everyone have a great weekend.

I know nothing about race nutrition. Can anyone recommend some website or books to look at that would help me out in that area?

Dave,

You are 100% correct in your concern. I have been road cycling since I was a kid. I have raced and and done just about everything cycling related. One year I did 15 centuries when I was single and lived in Atlanta. Even now, I still mess up on my nutrition during rides.

Now, I am one of those jumping into the goals with only one race under my belt and I have shared your concern because of the run part mainly. I know how hard it is going to be to simulate actual race conditions during training so my plan test as much as I can during my runs. Biggest concern has been nutrition and equipment. I am fortunate here that I have a seasoned triathlete who is a great resource for information. He was there with me last year during my first tri and walked me through it etc. I also ask a lot of questions on here.

PS, you don't have to step off the soap box. The reason many of us are here is for the advice people such as yourself can give us. I started this as a non runner. I posted a few questions on the forum and I got some great advice which I have used in setting up a training plan and build up plan for my event.

Bottom line, thanks for sharing.

good luck with the marathon tomorrow Elaine.   I will post up my race report later.  but for a short.  I improved about 5 mins over last year. and ran 6 seconds of the course record. With all that I still took 17th.   Course record was beaten 15 times today.    I had a great showing and felt good about my overall fitness.   Time to drive a little more speed work and I think I can get to the top.

Jen,

I'm in the same boat but I'm coming to the conclusion that I will need to learn some more about ME to determine this.  It will be different for each one of us and we will learn a bit more during/after our longer workouts.  Here's a recent thread I found in the Iron distance forum:

Question of the week:   I think I may have started something that would be a good discussion for us.

What do you do for Nutrition on Training and race day?

I really had to work with this last year.   I have an extremely high metabolism and have to take in a lot of calories so it might not work for you.    If I am running an OLY or longer  I increase my cal per day to about 4500.    it is about 700 more than normal for me.

Race day:   Large breakfast of about 400 cal 2 1/2 hours before race.   I consume an energy bar 20 mins before starting to carry the swim.   After transition I start on a power bar as soon as settle on bike.   It take about 10-12 miles to eat this.   Then a gel (accelgel)  every 35 mins.

I keep two bottles on my bike one with Pedilyte, and 1 water.   I aternate with each drink.

Gels:   Keep trying different gels that settle with you.   the accel gel settles with me the best.   I tryed hammer put it felt heavy in my stomach.  Others felt like the sloshed around when running.   I will only have two with caffine during a race.    If you have any questions please put them up.  I had to experiment for a long time to start getting something that worked.
