It wasn't the worst time I have had but I was very disappointed. With more training and losing weight I am aiming for a sub 3 hour half by this time next year. I can do this!!!! Tomorrow is my off day but Tuesday I will begin training for my 5th sprint triathlon. I did 5 last year however I never trained for any of them. This time I am focused on losing weight, training, and getting faster. Now that this half is over I will be on here more. Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend! Congrats on your half marathon. Do you do these races with friends or a group? |

New user 431 Hingham, MA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Sorry guys - Computer issues - actually from trying to download ispell for this site (from CNET) - any one else have issues? Anyway in at 177.5 - up a freaking pound. Didn't cheat at all on my meal plan and worked out hard. This week I did 2 hours of spin class, 3 hours master swim class, 6 hours of running and a couple of free weight training sessions. Well over 11 hours of working out (see log), no cheating on diet and I gain a pound! I have another meeting in a couple of weeks with my nutritionist and if I don't see any improvement I'm going back to calories in - calories out. Been eating only non-processed foods, whole grains, proteins and vegetables. I am 5'9' and want to get below 160 where my BMI says I should be. I am told we need our carbs to feed the engine but does anyone have any suggestions for me? I will post the weekly portly triathlete challenge numbers once I get my other computer cleaned up. Thanks in advance for your patience. Edited by JREDFLY 2013-01-21 12:08 PM |

Member 1083 | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED It seems like everybody has had busy weekends and we're off to a great start to the week. I have finally caught "the cold." It wasn't a huge surprise because late last week my son (he's 6) who already has "the cold" sneezed directly on my fact. It was gross. Little kids can be pretty gross. But even though I jumped up and went and washed my face immediately I thought to myself ... okay get ready for the crud. Sure enough Saturday afternoon it started. So I skipped my bike ride yesterday. I have previously tried to ride with a head cold and while it's certainly not impossible it's not much fun. Today I am again taking it easy - drinking lots of fluids and all the regular stuff. While I'm a bit stir crazy hanging around the house I'm forcing myself to take it easy and hoping I'll be better enough by tomorrow to do some light training. Oh well - tis the season for colds and I'm thankful I just have a cold and not the flu. |

Big but athletic Going to agree with DLB on this one, if you have even a moderate amt of muscle on you it throws the numbers off. I'm the same height (5'9) and i've always been below 20% bodyfat, but my BMI analysis that i get for my healthcare discount at work always says i'm obese. On a happy note, i signed up for my first real 5K (i don't count warrior dash) on 2/2

New user 431 Hingham, MA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Thanks DLB and Josephie on the BMI info! DLB - Sleep is huge for me, getting up at 5:00 AM to get to the pool by 6:00 is really hard if I am not in bed by 9:00-9:30. Otherwise it makes for a long day and I feel drained all week long. I was also running at 5:00 on the other days but l have been able to fit in some mid-day runs lately because it has been soooo cold up here at that hour. I can run in the 20's and teens but when it starts hitting single digits with wind chill below zero I got to wait till it warms up later in the day or hit the treadmill. Member 1083 | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Alright - forgive my u-verse sponsored absence from the online world. I was one of the lucky folks to lose phone service and Internet since Sunday night. I am recovering from my cold and yesterday I was back to the pool. Now the cold is inflicting its chaos on my daughter and husband. That's the way these things go. They are both off to the doctor this morning. In bigger news. I got an email from Ironman France today that it's only 5 short months away. Yikes. That's freaking me out a little bit of course. (That means it's about the same time frame for Nato777 for Coeur D'Alene, right? come join me in my slight freak out please) I'm running the Miami 1/2 marathon this weekend. It's such a crowded race that I'm thinking of it like a supported social training run. Otherwise I get too frustrated on the course. It's great to see all the weight loss progress. Stick to it guys. I have no weight loss advice to give but keep focused and keep working on it and I'm sure you'll see progress. |

Member 21 Raleigh, NC | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Hi Amy - Is the Miami half the same route as the rock-n-roll? I did the rock-n-roll in 2011 (inaugural year) and wondered to myself as a Miami native .... Why am I running through this part of town?????
Good luck this weekend! Martha (Now in frigid Raleigh North and missing the South Florida sun and warmth!) |

Member 1083 | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED It's sort of the same course. I think RnRoll starts and finishes on the beach, right? For ING We start by the AA arena run over the causeway - up south beach - back over the Julia tuttle - South past Camilus house and community partnership for the homeless :-) and then finish at Bayfront Park. |

New user 431 Hingham, MA | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED Swimming question: I have a hard time breathing through my nose while running and mostly take in air via my mouth, if I didn't I would be sucking wind after a half mile. This is due to having my nose broken a couple of times and my allergies don't help where as my sinuses constantly feel conjested. I did some reading on this and they prefer runners to breath in through their nose but I think the best advice I got was to suck in air any way you can. I have seen on videos that swimmers should breath out their nose which I have been doing but today I tried breathing out my mouth and it seemed a bit easier. I asked my coach and he said he prefers swimmers to breath out there nose but some people have to wear nose clips so it should be OK. Any advice and/or opinions on breathing out your nose vs. mouth? Thanks, James |

83 | Subject: RE: Mamma Amy Knows Best - Mentor Group Year One - CLOSED I have the same problem with broken nose. Once I got really comfortable in the water, I found that nose breathing actually was easier and made me breath more consistently. Breathing while running is a whole different story. I find a combo is the best I can do. Good luck |
