I've been living here for over 12years and every year is different, this seems to be the year of storms, the temperature is mild, 5-10C most days, very little frost, no snow at all so far (although one year we got snow in St Paddy's), but a lot of rain and high winds. I've been lucky enough to ride outside most Sundays so far, but my toes and fingers have suffered.... By the way, does anyone have any tips? I'm wearing two gloves and three pairs of socks and they seem to make no difference.
Have you tried using handwarmers?  You know those chemical packs that when exposed to air generate heat?  I know some people put those in their shoes during cold ride.  You could probably put them in between pairs of gloves or something too.  Around here you can get them at gas stations, Walmart, etc.

You need to block the wind too. Try toe covers for your feet and thicker wind blocking gloves. Joe's hand warmer idea is a good one too.

That said, I'm a wimp road biking when it's cold and tend to ride the trainer even when it's a little chilly. My hands and feet don't do well road biking in the cold.

i did not see that your having problems with cold weather cycling , i do just like what Joe and Mike and others would recommend. Just to add i would apply tape over the vents of my cycling shoes, particularly the ones for Tri are designed for good ventilation good under the heat bad when cold. I dont know about you , but i dont like cold wind in my face so i use a Balaclava. the first layer i use underneath my cycling jacket are the same ones for running its thin and light enough. If you can endure cold running you should be ok in cycling , but i do understand the mental challenge everytime im cycling cold i wish i was back in bed.

Today I swam and ran. Overall not too bad but in the swim I was swimming steady and only managed to cover 1550m/62lengths. In the next lane a much younger fellow than me swam 2500m in the same time. I'm certainly glad for him that he can swim so fast but I do feel frustrated that I can't swim faster than I do.

My run was pretty good (outdoors in the sun) and I ran nearly as fast as last Monday but I did feel I was having trouble maintaining my pace. My legs just seemed to feel heavier today. Other wise, I think it was just a slightly off day and I should be able to pick it up a bit over the next few runs.

Hey, me too!  And I swam with a dude who was faster than me as well.  This college kid in the local tri club who is knew to the tri scene I met at a recent meeting had been asking to swim with me.  Turns out he's a bit faster than me.  Not a ton but a little faster.  Definitely frustrating, but made me push myself harder trying to keep up with him and I had fun with it.  Made me really miss going to Masters, haven't been to a Masters swim in a few months.

I also found that if I ran and swam the same day, my second workout felt sluggish. Don't worry about pace, you are building fitness and the pace will come back when you recover.

ETA, I'm not a fast swimmer either. It can be frustrating, humbling and humiliating for sure.

Ok folks going to need some work out!

Being sent up north next week for two weeks and when I mean north I mean staying in the middle of now where with no fitness equipment and running at night is probably not advisable as I may be eaten by a wolves north I was thinking maybe finding some yoga dvds and i could at least do some yoga. I hear those jillian work outs are pretty good too!

I usually run after swim training and I used to find it really tough to keep the pace, legs always felt heavy, but since I started having a banana or an apple between workouts it got much better.
Went for my swim training this morning and as soon as I got out of the pool my neck and back felt really sore, cutting a long story short: it got worse as the day went on and I ended up in A&E, whiplash, told to keep moving but nothing high impact. I'll take tomorrow off, maybe try to swim on Thurs and cycle on Friday in the spin bike, will stay away from running the rest of the week.

Add some pushups and planks. I can post a link to some hip/core exercises later after work if you want.

Tay - I'm sorry you're whiplashed. Hopefully it won't be too much trouble for you. I used to treat people with whiplash among other things and I wish I could help. I would just caution you to be careful turning over in bed at night - go slower than you would normally. Keeping moving is good as you say.

Today was fairly easy for me. Just the cycling class which was fast and fun. At one point we were sprinting up to zone 5 and I briefly hit 49.6kph/30.8mph (sounds better in metric) and 115rpm.

Tomorrow, I'm swimming and hopefully running if my legs feel up to it.

I'm already getting cabin fever and it's only been one day of doing nothing. Going to swim tomorrow, hopefully I'm not too sore, and my father-in-law is lending me money to get a turbo trainer, I think cycling should be low impact enough but I'm still a bit dizzy, wouldn't feel confident to go on the road, also a good excuse to get the trainer sooner
George - how long will it take for the pain to go away? Is going to physio worth it to speed it up?

Hi Tay, It's always hard to know how long it will take to heal - especially from this far away. So whatever I say is just my opinion.

Sprains and strains are usually 6 to 8 weeks to heal but I would say that if you have full range of motion in your neck then you can hope to be back to normal sooner but if you have restriction/limitation of your ROM then it will be longer. To go swimming tomorrow would be a reasonable test to see how you feel BUT if you start swimming and feel pain - follow the DDT rule - Don't Do That. So if you start doing anything and feel pain stop.

Physio wouldn't be a bad idea if you have easy access. You can get a treatment and a better assessment of your injury and hopefully some advice on things you can do at home to help yourself.

Good luck.

Signed up to do a Duathlon May.10th. It'll be my first race of any type outside of 5-10km runs.

It's a 5km run, 20 km bike and a 2.5km run. Pretty excited.

Carlo - When you go swimming do you go with a buddy? I always swim with a fellow I train with and we sometimes swim across a local lake together. Sometimes we have a small group of 5 to 10 which is pretty neat as well.

Greg - The Du should be fun AND, it's the same day as my Du. Just a few miles apart. Last year it kicked my adz so I have to go back and do it better. My downfall was the second run after the bike leg so Bricks are my plan for this year.

@Greg and George
Good Luck on your DUs should be so so much fun!!!!

@ George

I swim just by myself , but make sure i am close to the edges if it gets too cold i make sure i cant get to dryland fast. I am always very careful with the weather nowadays normally if the air tempt. is 70s +/- 1 , water is like 55s to 60s and i am ok with that if air tempt gets to 50s or lower i wont even try to go to the lake.

Happy Training to you all 5 more weeks for the PRIZE!!!!

I need to stop recovering and get back at it :-). Stressful week at work, travel for work, son's birthday, and crappy weather were my excuses for not running. I'll get back at it this weekend. I am ready for spring though even though its a couple months away for us here in St. Louis.

Ugh, miserable swim today. My arms were tired going in, I had just finished midnights so I was wanting to go to bed, I hadn't slept well at all the day before. Just awful. Forced myself to do it.

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
