193 , California | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Ran 3 miles today after work. Also I previously lied when I said I was at 7/24 for Thor's challenge, as I hadn't counted my two 15-minute strength sessions thus far in January, so with them in now the count is 10/24. Welcome Lindsey. Be a wimp Dave O., run inside! |

13 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Did my first swim of the year. Only 650 to 750m (I always loose count). The pool was crowded, 9-10 people in my lane in a 25m pool. I guess a lot of people with new year resolutions who will soon give up. All doing different kinds of strokes at different speeds making it more a war zone then a pool lane. Had to do some sprints to pass people which was pretty heavy after 3 weeks of no swimming. anyway first training of 2016 is done. |

Member 220 Wakefield, Massachusetts | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Welcome aboard, Lindsey! If you need race recommendations, I've done a handful on the South Shore and South Coast, and our fearless leader Doug could list off a bunch too. Where in MA are you? Don't worry about the spin class. They'll shout a bunch of instructions you won't understand, so just copy what the person next to you is doing and remember you get to set your own resistance level. Instructor quality varies widely, so hopefully you've got a good one. -Dennis |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Originally posted by Qua17 Crappy run this morning. It was a slog which inspired the Question of the Week: How do you motivate yourself when you get really tired and want to pack it in? I have a couple of strategies: 1) I have conversations in my head. Back when this group started, Thor was the voice I heard a lot during races and when I was really sucking wind. He'd "tell" me something like, "Us Canadians could conquer this hill easier than sucking down a case of Molsen." Or I'd have a conversation with my grandparents who have past away 2) I tell myself, I'm gonna run to that tree. And then I run to the next three... 3) I bribe myself. Walk and it's a Coors Light Penalty. Finish strong and it's a trip to the beer store. 4) Think about how my effort will let me achieve my goals or crush my next race. 5) Pray 6) Recite this from memory: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbkZrOU1Zag |

Member 3143 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open #17--33 minute trainer ride this morning #18--3 mile run with the pup this afternoon #19--30 minutes of yoga immediately after my run My serious answer to DQ's question about strategy to keep going is that when I want to quit, I make myself go ten more minutes. If, after 10 more minutes, I still want to quit, I quit. What normally happens is that I get into a groove during those ten minutes and don't want to quit. This, of course, is barring any injury, pain, niggles, etc. i try to listen to those things and stop befor exacerbating and issue. |

193 , California | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open My answer to Dave's question about motivating myself. Couple things come to mind: 1) Think in small chunks like Dave mentioned. Get to the next tree, the next intersection, the next song if I'm listening to music. Just break it down. Many small wins equal a big win in the end. The mind is a powerful thing and even if I know I'm "tricking" myself it just works. 2) Stop thinking about the pain and think about the end goal. "WHY is this a good idea?" It might be a morning run and ill remind myself that how much it sucks now won't compare to how good ill feel all day at work having got my workout in. If it's a night run it could be the beer waiting for me at home or the kids asking me how far I ran. If it's a big hill on the bike it could be as short term as going down the other side. Just move your mind to the benefit of what you are doing now. Is there not a quote feature on this app or I am not technically smart??? -Matt |

193 , California | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open #11/24 just got a 35 minute swim in before work. Feels good to be getting back in the rhythm after a couple months out of the pool. But man is it rough! Note this doesn't count as my goal this week of waking up for a week day workout. I'm not going into work until afternoon today so there was no esrly morning alarm. I relaxed in the morning, walked my boy to school after breakfast, and came back for a 9 am swim. So I have two days left to get my butt out of bed or its a penalty for me! |

We've got the same goal! Riffing on the question of the week, if you have a good way to motivate yourself to roll out of bed early and get in a workout, let me know. It's especially tough for me when I know I can usually fall back on a lunch-hour run (even if morning would be better for my schedule). |

189 Quakertown, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open For my workout today I wanted to baby the knee since it still hurt walking in the brace, so I hopped on the stationary bike for the first time since my Oly. Strange, but the knee felt great on the bike. 1 hour/16.5 miles and a puddle of sweat later, I hop off of the bike and magically the knee feels MUCH better walking too. Immediate reward for working out. Awesome! |

423 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Bah! Every year I always miss the switch over. Anyway, hope everyone had excellent holidays and the new year is off to a good start. I have pretty big news. I'm going to be racing for a real pro team this summer. Not on their trade but the development team (farm team), which is huge for me. http://www.santeuniversellemarinbikes.com (It's a quebec based team so everything is in french.) And in true BDAS form, the team is sponsored by a local craft brewery (we even have our own beer) Speaking of beer, I visited 2 breweries over the holidays, Barnstormer in Barrie and Left Field in Toronto. Both were not bad but I've definitely had better. Wife and I are heading to Costa Rica at the end of the month. I don't know what the beer is like down there but I'm certainly going to have a look around.
Cheers!

Congrats on making the team, that's a huge accomplishment. You guys race both road and cyclocross? Gotta love a bike team sponsored by a beer company. Love it. Good luck in the upcoming race season, and have fun in Costa Rica. We are escaping the snow next week, heading to Puerto Rico. Cheers from New Brunswick |

Deep in the Heart of Texas | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Originally posted by Qua17 How do you motivate yourself when you get really tired and want to pack it in? Commitment. For me, I have to set a plan and agree to stick with it no matter what. Motivation is fleeting and finicky. Commitment gets me up at 4:30 for a run when I am motivated to stay in bed. |
