I think that I would definately work on the bike and swimming more, but still get in a couple of runs in a week. To me it looks like your weakest area would be swimming. I would focus your plan around that. Swimming is mostly technique based (as discussed in this thread before) If you can, have someone look at your swim stroke and critique. I dont think your swim time is from a lack of fitness, but from a lack of technique. I am sure charleston or Andy could chime in more on this. Do you feel like your legs are dragging when swimming??? If you have a chance, check out www.totalimmersion.com Even their free videos online seemed to help me. I know some people that have the books and videos and learned alot from them. I would write more but I should probably get back to work. Good luck.

Thank you for your detailed response.

First, my swim technique has improved enormously since last year's tri. I really had not adequately prepared myself for the swim. Also, I had purchased an inappropriate (both in fit and use) wetsuit that had literally filled with water and sunk my whole body underwater. I now have a good wetsuit and a MUCH better technique. So, I will only do 2 swim worjouts a week to prepare myself.

I used TI and it helped me. For now I feel fairly confident that my swim will improve much in the next 2 months, and it has improved greatly the past year. My first tri I did it just to do it; this year I want to do it right and improve. As for someone critiquing my stroke and technique, I am going to look into that. I can't afford (either in time of funds) to hire a swim coach, but I know of a local swim school where you just show up and a swim instructor helps you with your stroke (for $25 a session).

Thank you for your advice. I'm always open to learning.

I'd say it largely depends on what kind of time you have. Would you be able to ride 3X, run 2X, and swim 2X per week? That would give you a good base for the tri.

You'll get the majority of time gains by focusing on the bike. With your run fitness in a good place right now, twice per week will be enough to maintain it.

Swimming-wise, twice a week is probably enough. I can give you some good workouts if you want them that will help with your technique, which would, in turn, help your form.

I'm here to help. Just let me know how I can do it.

Yes, I absolutely have a schedule that will allow me 3-2-2. I am a SAHM and my dd is in preschool, so I get most of my workouts in while she is there, or I take her with me and she hangs out in the kids' club while I get my workouts in.

The bike is my focus right now. Currently I am doing spin classes to get my workouts in, and each class is an hour long. It's just convenient for me to take a class. And, I should note, last year a cyclist got hit while out for a ride a month before my tri and...well...it spooked me. I'm trying to get over my fear of being on the roads. And I am generally a very fearless person (lots of friends and family think I'm a little nuts).

I have looked at your logs, Andy, and noticed how structured your swims are. I would really appreciate your help in giving me some drills. I do throw some technique drills into most swims (focus on high elbows, brushing my thumbs against the outside, etc.), but I think I'm sort of past the need for such drills. I'd like to throw in some speedplay, or something to mix it up. So I am definitely open to drills. Give me whatever you got and I'll do whatever you tell me to do.

I train by myself 100%. I don't mind that, but I tend to stay within my comfort zone an I want to get beyond that.

350 is a good number to upgrade on. Mine usually start going wonky around 400 miles. Once you hit 450, you might as well be barefoot.

Awesome!! I get more excited about going shopping for a new pair of running shoes than I do a pair of feminine shoes.

Me too.

Then again, I've never shopped for feminine shoes so I have no point of reference. The last time I went shopping for anything besides running shoes was a trip to Walmart last summer for some sandals, so I'm really out of my element.

Looks like I'm going to be retiring my shoes pretty soon though. I'm just over 300 miles now, with a marathon next weekend. Probably be getting some in mid-March so they are broken in before my spring A race in April.

So, hope everyone has a good weekend. I'm going to be working all day tomorrow at my father-in-law's cabin in the woods. He broke his foot getting off a ladder, so if I want to stay there in 3 weeks for a race, I have to miss a training weekend and do some work. Fun fun fun.

Train hard and smart campers!

Be careful on the ladder.

What marathon are you doing next weekend. What's your goal? How do you feel a week from race day?

Just got back from Skiing in Colorado for the week. Tried to run today - and had no lungs - I think getting back used to this altitude may take a few days.
Anyways, good to be back and getting back into the routine.

I'm doing the Cowtown Marathon with my wife. It's her first, and due to lots of stuff happening, she's not at all well-trained for it. We're just going to run together, take it at her pace, and have fun with it. We did this for a half marathon a year and a half ago. Other than her wanting to shoot me about mile 10, we had a great time. So I figured going another 13.1 miles would be twice the fun...

Best of luck to your wife! Is she nervous? Excited? She sounds like a tough lady. I'm already proud of her. Will she post her rr on these boards?

My first marathon I just did what I needed to do to get through it. I took it nice and easy, and took it all in. How wonderful that you are doing it together.

My husband would love to do a triathlon with me, but he has a really bad back and running messes him all up. When our daughter is much older I want to buy a tandem bike for us. It'll look a little funny, though. I'm 5' and he's 6'5". Heh.

At this point she is just ready to get it over with. She's ready to get back on the bike and into the pool. She doesn't have a schedule that lets her train as much as I do, so she's had to forgo everything but running.

Here's her blog BTW.

Fantastic

weightloss over ten lbs now (many still to go)
still not smoking
can run double what I could when I started
got roommate training (girlfriend still won't go near)

I love the accountability and the resources this place provides, if I could get the weather to cooperate with my training schedule all would be right in the world.

I hope everyone else is doing well. Off to watch Clemson beat up on FSU (after a quick run of course). Good night

I am dead - I started with a swimming coach this morning - There is a big difference in going from a 25 meter to 50 meter pool -
I think it is really going to make a difference in my endurance. Doing a brick tomorrow.

Yikes. I think I'd drown in a 50 meter-long pool. Great job.

I had a most excellent workout today: Hour-long spin class followed by 725 meter swim. I could have done more, but I do my swim while my daughter is in her music class, and I still have to shower and change before I pick her up. But I had 23 minutes scheduled for my swim and I did my 23 minutes.

And I FINALLY got some clipless pedals and shoes. I'm so excited to figure out how to use them and not get killed. I enjoy spinning classes (it helps me really push myself), but I want to get on my bike. I know that it just isn't the same as being on the roads. My next investment will be tri shorts and a new helmet. Then a cool biking jersey. Then I'm about as geared up as I can currently afford.

Hope everyone is doing well. Not that I'm finally *ahem* back into tri training, I'll check into this thread more often.

Go get 'em, Tigers!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and I've decided to layer tri training and marathon training. I can't help myself; I'm infatuated with running.

April triathlon, June marathon and then my big goal this year is to log an ultra (50k or 50 miles---it depends on what I can convince my husband to let me do). Hah!!!

I'd like to to an ocean tri, too, somewhere in there. The possibilities are endless. I anticipate 2008 will be a bang-upyear for little me.

Way to go - I am down 23 pounds since Nov. - getting up those climbs on the bike seems to be getting easier without all that weight - Keep it up!

Ill keep my fat picture on my desktop to remind me!

We all mentioned our weight loss goals when we started in the group. How is everyone doing?

I'm back to my ideal weight (except for this morning following a DELICIOUS but late tex-mex dinner with the hubs last night . It is SO HARD to stay on track when I'm out to eat or faced with in-office temptations like girl scout cookies. I took one box of girl scout cookies and left them in the gym this afternoon...cruel, I know, but I couldn't handle it.

The best thing about going to a 50m pool is it will improve your endurance. Not having that wall at 25m to take a breath and recover is tough at first, but it will really help you with your breathing.

Also, not having a wall to push off at 25 will help you when you have open water swims. No walls in a lake you know, unless you are swimming next to a spillway, in which case I wouldn't do the race.

Everyone sounds like they are doing a great job!

It's getting close to race season here in Texas. Let's try something to get everyone motivated and give everyone an idea of what everyone else has planned. Post your race calendar for the next couple of months, say through April. Do a "Quote" instead of reply and plop your races to the list chronologically. If it's a tri, list the distances.

I'll get it started:

  • Feb 23 - apw0397 - Cowtown Marathon
  • March 8 - apw0397 - Athens YMCA Sprint Triathlon - 300m swim, 13.2 mile bike, 5k run
  • April 13 - apw0397 - Playtri Half Ironman - 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run
