WittyCityGirl - 2010-04-22 4:05 PM Funny thing is(and I swear this will be the last time I'll bring up anything to do with time at LP)...I don't plan on wearing my Garmin.  I actually perform better when I'm not watching my pace! Craaaazy.

I actually dont think i plan on wearing mine either. I tend to have a better read of my body than i can find on a little computer screen. I pace better and do not obsess about HR and splits when i run without it

I don't wear mine for races.  But then again I don't even know how to work the thing other than start or stop.  I wouldn't have even worn a watch if it wasn't for wanting to keep my eye on nutrition.

My thing on time goals is most cannot adjust their pace due to external factors like heat, rain, wind, early on in a race, and by the time they do, it's too late.  HR/PM can help you take these things into consideration.....

PennState - 2010-04-22 5:02 PM So James, what splits do you need to KQ this year? (I kid, I kid)

I need some of that magic AZ dust.

bryancd - 2010-04-22 9:15 AM You don't race an IM to a specific time, you race an IM to a specific effort, however you measure that (pace, power, HR, RPE).

Well I don't mean to be the rebel here.

When you know what your “(pace, power, HR, RPE)” will yield as far as time at that distance why not race in time goals?  Or is it that old saying anything that can go wrong will, type of thing?

IMLP 09’ was my first official IM and I hit my times goals for completion, under for swim, bike and T2, and over for T1 and the run.  I purposely slow on the bike after racing Fred to Hazleton Rd.  My run was a marred with me being delayed in nutrition; but I recovered.  Was this my perfect IM?  I hope not!  But point being I did it on time.

While I was (and still am) a Ironman newbie, I am not new to racing and have experience.  Maybe that was my key.  Just thought I throw it out for any one like me.

Hey does anybody know of anybody on BT or St in the M45-49 AG that Kona qualified?   I would like to ask them a few questions.  Thanks.

You should know pretty much exactly what your splits will/should be. I have predicted and nailed all three of my IM pre-race estimates and time goals. Ask Fred, he remembers. I based those goals off of the results I had seen in my training in the weeks leading into the race. Swim is easy, you bike will be close in pace to what you ride your long training rides in, and then run will be within :30 of your long training runs, maybe a little closer.

My point is that DURING the race, I don't look to hit time splits or pace splits. I just manage the effort and the splits will be there if I have trained properly. It's much simpler than jacking around with GPS and computers, hitting lap buttons, whatever. My race plan is designed to be low stress and simple. When I got off the bike at IMAZ, I had a vague idea of what I rode, but I had to ask someone during the run to check it for me. I never paid any mind to race time. During the run, I never split any miles or loops, I just ran to the effort I trained.

I agree with Bryan on this.  having never done an IM, the above bold stands out to me.  For those that have, has this held true, and if not, why do you think that is the case?

You boys are such great assets to have in this thread. Your knowledge and perspectives are valuable for us newbies.

I will be up in Lake Placid with the Multisports Camp the first weekend in June training with a little lady named Paula Newby Fraser. Ever heard of her???

I would however love to go up another weekend and meet up with some BTers and take another stab at the course. Unfortunately I have a few weddings that are killing my weekends in May and June.

I expect to go up on a whim one weekend with a bike and a sleeping bag and no other plans and see what happens.  A weekend that a few other people are going would be just the motivation I need to have such a whim.  I'm not one for training camps.  I am one for training, hanging out, and chilaxin by a fire with a cold one in the evening.

All right, I know this has been brought up before, but who is going up to LP to train before the race?

I'm actually thinking of it this year and trying to see if there's any interest.

Late May or late June.

Any interest?

I was thinking of going up during the Firemanironman training weekend. Would be nice to have some support on the course.

Wow, I wish I would have seen that training camp before I paid for mine. Looks as good as any other and FREE. I wish I could do that too but going up there 2 weekends in a row is unrealistic.

I may be doing something similar on a random weekday in Early June as I'm on vacation.  Put the kids to bed and start the 4-5 hour drive up, then crash on an air mattress in the back of the minivan.  Wake up whenever and start the ride, then head home when I finish.  I'll probably bring the wetsuit for a dip in Mirror Lake and run a loop of the course.  Don't know if I'd do two bike loops or make my own Lake Placid Half Ironman out of the day.  The Odyssey may end up stinkin' real bad, but it would be hard core and good prep.

That just came out stream of consciousness, but the half iron seems like divine inspiration to me!  Gonna seriously work on making this happen.

This is gonna be epic!  Green light from the wife.  Tentative date of Tuesday, June 8th.

Anyone know if there are lifeguards there?  I'm not too hopeful for early AM midweek in June.  I may just suit up and take a quick dip if there aren't any.  A solo start could be quite a bit more hazardous than the mass start of race day.  I daresay I'm not that crazy.

Other than that, the rest of the day will be self supported with me, my gear, a garmin, and a cell phone with the number of the local cab company and police department programmed in it.  I'll be travelling heavy on the bike with extra tubes and CO2 just in case.

I like this...
