Subject: RE: Asphalt Junkies Spring 2013 - Closed DirkP - 2013-04-30 6:00 PM trigal38 - 2013-04-25 5:06 PM Note to self - never, ever copy a swim workout from Dirk's training log ever again! In case you want to go back on your word, I have another swim work out for you......... MS: This was the first 100's work out I've done for some time. It was a good one for sure. The wheels never came off for the entire main set but I was wearing down. I am sure I could have done another 5 without puking but after that all bets would have been off. I have been really trying to develop a solid head position during my entire stroke cycle but mostly when I breath. I have not been able to get any recent, useable video footage of what I have been doing for bad habits but I think I had been over rotating my head during the breathing cycle of the stroke. I have been really focused on seeing water out of the low side of my goggles on either side; meaning if breathing to the right my left eye would be able to see the entire underside of the water, while the right eye would see the side of the pool. It seems I have been reasonably successful in my endeavor. Another thing I have been working on is my left hand pull. I had been doing a little bit of an "S" pull that I believe was slowing my stroke rate slightly and wasting a ton of energy. I have mostly corrected this weakness and I usually only go sour after I get really tired during some ridiculous sets. With these corrections in mind I think I am doing some of my best swimming I've done. Race season will be what tells the story though! Especially in August! Ouch, I can't believe I am saying this but I'll give it a try on Thursday. I'm cringing while I'm typing this. I'll go on 1:45 though, well at least for as long as I can! I think I do the same thing with lifting my head too far when I get tired. Another issue I think I have when I get tired is my arms just go kinda flat through the water instead of having a catch and pull. But, right now I just need to swim more and work harder. Although for a just a few seconds sometimes I wonder if it is worth all the hard work! |

Subject: RE: Asphalt Junkies Spring 2013 - Closed Ran in my Hoka One One's for the first time tonight. Those are some crazy shoes. They are huge. Honestly I can't even look at them they are so ugly. They are really light and springy though. Surprisingly so when you see how big they are. I thought they would feel cumbersome but nope. I kept thinking that I felt like Mario from my kids Super Mario Brothers video games bouncing from step to step - boing, boing. Jeff I kept thinking of you with your heel pain and wondering if they would help at all. They certainly did seem to absorb the shock and my feet did not hurt at all. Of course I only went 3 miles so not getting too excited yet but there was a real difference from any other shoe I have ever worn. Oh, and my pace was a little faster. Usually if my pace starts to pick up my feet let me know but tonight I didn't get any of that negative feedback from my feet so what felt comfortable was about :30 seconds or so quicker than my normal easy pace. I don't know if that is good or bad LOL. It also could have been due to the nice weather and our first 80 degree day!! |

The first time I did it I thought what have I gotten myself into, I practiced more hills before the race and I was able to conquer it both time of the loop. I believe this is your first IM, like it was mine, so don't let the experienced guys fool you into thinking the hills are rolling, some are, but my idea of rolling was not the majority of those hills. I can't imagine how tough it is to have to go through that. I'm also glad to hear that your trainer is helping you with your swim. I think it's great when you can get a second opinion on your swimming. Nothing better than having someone watch what your doing. Thanks for the advice on the bike course. I know the veterans kind of down play the hills on the course which makes me a little nervous so I appreciate your perspective on this. In any case I am doing exactly what you are suggesting. I am going to do as many rides as I can that include hills. I need to improve both my climbing and my descents. I am planning on another 3 hour suffestfest this Saturday trying to do as many hill repeats as I can handle. Did you book a place for Syracuse yet? |

I had planned on taking it easy because I signed up for a 10k on 6-2, but now with the challenge laid down.... I'm going to have to go for sub-21! as for the HIM, I'm up for the challenge, but do I get any sort of handicap for the bike and swim time? Not sure I can catch up in this departments! If I even sniff at 5:30 time I would be ecstatic! Realistically I will probably be closer to 6:00. And would be happy with that!mambos - 2013-04-29 9:37 PM jgerbodegrant - 2013-04-29 2:19 PM Matt, I'm jealous. I wish I could take some credit for your running!!! I am so proud of your improvements over what seems like less than two years...right? Yep, been just a little over 2 years since I became "active", my drive is to keep up with the mentors of this group! You are definitely making some amazing progress Matt. I knew I had to claim my one HM win over you last year and that you'd leave me in the dust. I'm still working on getting one last 5k victory. If you don't lower that 21:25 too much on June 1st, I'm hoping to use my June 6 race to get one last victory. I'm afraid even 21:25 is a little aggressive given my current running fitness, but it'll be my last chance at the rate you are improving. On 9/8, you're on for another virtual half race! |

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: Asphalt Junkies Spring 2013 - Closed I guess my totals are little low from last month. Besides the marathon training coming to a close andsome recovery from the race, the rest of my schedule got crushed from additional unplanned conflicts but here they are:
I had hoped to have many more miles in the saddle after Boston but it seemed I couldn't get that going because of work and home activities and then swimming almost always relates to the pool issues with lane time that are ridiculously unavailable. I have learned that I have to at least attempt to go over there when only one lane is available. So far I've not been totally screwed. I've been able to get most of a work out in or all of it but a little bit more rest because I've had to change lanes to accommodate the club swimmers coming in. Now I am actually getting aggravated again! |

I hope I didn't scare you I just want you to be prepared. It's good to know that your oldest sister seems to be coming along well. I think it's perfectly fine for you to mention to Margie that making herself active in one form or another would help occupy her mind. You may be able to pose it to her as a question rather than a suggestion. Something like: "Do you think that staying busy would help distract you from some of the problems you've been having?" Dwelling on bad things all the time will have an adverse impact on a persons everyday life. Trying to make something positive happen will almost always have encouraging prospects and I imagine that's what Margie needs. Ways to help Margie along may be to provide examples, without being really direct in your approach, might be to find things in creation that are positive right now. "Hey, the snows over and warm temperatures are here!" Or something like......"The geese are migrating back to Canada." Whatever she normally has enjoyed, give it to her verbally and see if her spirits lift. I don't remember you having a triathlon coach. I knew you had a trainer but I didn't realize, or at least remember, that he has the expertise to coach in triathlon disciplines. Either way, enjoy the time with your coach. Getting pointers from him should prove beneficial in the time you're leading up to another HIM and then later the IM. Have a great time this weekend with your family at the HM. That should be a great time for you. Have a great HM this weekend |

Good luck at the pool. My old gym used to be like that, the new one so far I have not ever had an issue with getting a lane. And as far as my trainer, I am lucky to have found him, he didn't have to take his break to help me with swimming, it wasn't part of my scheduled training he truly looks to help people become successful with there health. He has a 4 year degree plus a bunch of other certifications so although he's not a tri-coach, he is more knowledgable than just helping someone lift weights and lose weight. Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: Asphalt Junkies Spring 2013 - Closed Makes sure you hit the pool Matt. The pool will keep you busy and allow your legs to recover too. Grab the bike for a little added recovery benefits but just do some easier stuff. The bike and pool may provide some added flexibility work by keeping your ankles moving without the impact of running. |
