Race report:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=454464&posts=1#M4348604

Could you give me some of your bike and run speed, please?

Come fix my swim and then sure.  It's all yours

Funny thing is that the swim matters the least.  I mean, doesn't matter how fast you come out of the water if everyone passes you on the run.

Funny thing about the local dynamics here though.  We have a lot of above average runners and really, really good cyclists so if I come out in the back of the swim I don't make up a ton of ground.  But if I were to come out in the front of the swim I'd have a fighting chance.  Perhaps this is why I feel a pull towards long course racing.  You have a ton of time on the bike and run legs to make up for a mediocre swim.

I see what you mean.  We all want to be great at all 3 disciplines, particularly if you put the time in; you know?  For me, I'm usually out of the water at  the middle or back of the FOP in the swim, and then I hold me own on the bike (not this last race but all of the others), and then women pass me on the run.  If I could have it any other way, I would sacrifice the swim for the run.  I just would.

I think for me half the battle is mental.  When you tell yourself you're slow or you can't run a certain pace for a long period of time, then sometimes you hold yourself back.  I know that's part of it.

I'm drawn to long course racing because I really don't think that sprinting is my strong suit.....never was in athletics.  I was a swimmer, a middle blocker in volleyball, a center in basketball, etc.  I was strong but never quick.

Great job everybody. I'm certainly glad I wasn't racing this weekend with that heat. Training in it was hard enough.

See Scott - you just have a lot of strong competitprs where you are. I'm with Jen - I'm usually MOP on swim, pass a lot of people on the bike, but then die on the run.  I'd give anything to be a stronger runner.

For the amount of time I spend in the water (which is limited, and was really very little this year) I'm ok that I'm not a super strong swimmer.

Nice racing everyone!

Well the RD said the course actually measured a little over 600m so I guess that makes the time a bit more palatable.

Just a comment .. If you say that you are front of the group going in the water and ending the swim MOP or BOP then I would say you need more OW practice. However, keep in mind that unless you do short races races all the time and they are your specialty, they are really kind of hard to gain any good rhythm or space to swim. Quit being so hard on yourself and focus on the A race!

Morning, all!  Up early for trainer ride and short run.  My HR was unusually high, and my quads were still sore from Sunday.

I keep checking the Eagleman site for 2013 registration but no luck.  I wonder what is holding up event registration.  Are you going to attempt this race with me, Michele?

I'm really getting anxious to exercise, but "coaches" orders I have need to take 2 weeks off. Cry

Exercise (especially running) is my outlet for work stress, and yesterday being my first day back to work, I really need to let off some steam!

Everyone else needs to run extra miles for me please.

Sorry I can't help you with miles. I have been ordered to rest as well Maybe only one more day coach?? I am itching to get started though!

Got some news for everyone...Scott this may seem like deja vu for you. The wife and I have been talking about adding to the family and we have decided to start trying this fall. Being the lovely wife that she is we have been discussing next years races and trying to plan things out around having a new one and we decided on Patriot Half in September in Williamsburg, VA. I figure that gives me almost a full year of training before hand. Now I just need to plan the rest of the season. How many races and what type should I be looking at doing? I was thinking a couple of sprints and possible a couple of oly's?

So I got my earplugs today.  Got both the cone shaped ones and the waxy ones.  Is one better than another?  Do they stay in pretty well?

Bought a nose plug too since I always get water in my nose on flipturns ... only a few bucks, can't hurt to try.

What I do (or try to do until people decide there are tons of races they "have" to do) is plan the season around the A race.  So I put in the A race and work backwards to put in other races that work well in the schedule (e.g. at the end of a planned rest work).  I organize the races to act as fitness check points on the way to the A race.  This is not the only way to do this.  I generally use a 3 weeks build, 1 week rest or 2 weeks build 1 week rest model and slot in an appropriate race at the end of the rest week.  However you can construct plans otherwise.

I think the thing to avoid is having all your "B" and "C" races dictate your season.  Racing is like ice cream, its really good in small quantities, on special occasions but eat it all the time and it will make you sick.

Had my follow up appointment with the Ortho today and got my MRI results.  The MRI confirmed that my shoulder dislocated out the back (a posterior subluxation) and that there is a partial tear to my labrum.  The good news is that because it was a posterior dislocation, PT should fix the problem.  The bad news is I still probably have another 2-4 weeks until  I can swim.

Did you see Missy Franklin's nose plug?  That thing is long!

I'm glad to hear that PT should fix the problem.  I'm sure with your swimming background you'll be in fine swimming shape in no time even with the 2-4 weeks off.

I guess that is a long time.  That sucks.  I guess your comfort once you do get back in the water will be affected by your injury as well.  Anything you can do in place of the swim in the meantime?
