PennState - 2010-10-04 7:24 AM Btw, I was reading that the spring mentor groups are essentially over per the sticky at the top of this thread section. I plan on sticking around until the new groups form in December as we do have a few people with races coming up.I will be forming a new mentor group in the winter session focused on off season winter training.Just making conversation

As one of the late season IM'ers, I appreciate you guys sticking around!!

Lets talk about bricks.

It didn't occur to me until yesterday that since I merged a run only plan with a tri plan to put my IM plan together, it deleted all the brick workouts.  I question the value of bricks for the longer distance events, but I see some folks posting huge bricks with several hours of bike time followed by another multi hour run.

Do any of you guys have any thoughts on this topic?

Ken:
I'm with you on the late season IM, so I'll still be around (although I have been quiet lately)

as for the bricks, I see a benefit to bike/run bricks following a long bike ride.  But I don't know how valuable a long run following a long bike would actually be.  If anything it sounds more like that would be more detrimental to the training by taking away what you are capable of doing for training the following day.  I think there's benefit to teaching your muscles to switch gears from bike to run, but I think the duration you run after has an inverse relation to the overall benefit to your training as a whole. But an easy 2 miler after a bike ride has (for me at least) helped with how quickly I get into a good rhythm with my running.

Although, to play devil's advocate on myself, I could see a benefit with learning how much nutrition you need to take in during the bike in order to do a 10+ mile run after it without dying at the end of it. Doing a 2 mile run after biking doesn't show you whether you ate/drank enough during the bike.  But personally, I see non-A priority races as a way to figure that out since the effort level of training yields different nutritional demands than the effort level of racing.

Ken- I really, really see the value of doing SOME sort of brick.  I realized during IMLP that nothing could prepare my body for a 26.2 mile run following...8 1/2 hours of activity.... but I was thankful that my legs had the memory in them to remember how to run off the bike without feeling wobbly.  Since we know HOW important good nutrition is on race day, I think it would be a super idea to do a run after a long ride to figure out when you can begin taking in fluid/calories without detrimental effects.  I'm thinking less than an hour at RPE 2-3 effort would be sufficient.  It's not the effort that you're training for at this point, it's learning what your guts are going to do at this point!  I don't think you'd lose anything by this since you'd get your "speed" and endurance training on the other runs specifically designed for that.

What say the other guys??

Thanks for the brick advice!  I guess I hadn't thought of it from a nutrition standpoint, but I am using the same nutrition (Infinit) on the run as the bike supplemented with h20 off the course.  Maybe I'll through in a brick on one of my shorter run or bike days every week or so leading up to it.  I guess I can see the value of the brick in the shorter, higher intensity races like sprints or oly's where there isn't time to slide into the run like in the longer distances.

I agree with Fred on the running on tired legs.  It hadn't been too bad with the long rides in the 60 - 70 range, but yesterdays run was more of a challenge after 100 on Saturday.  Good idea to get some of the long run at MP, I am guessing that the suggestion is to have those MP miles in the second half of the long run?

I did quite a few bricks when training for my HIM and will probably do some when training for IMAZ next year. I like them. Running on tired legs is hard for me so I found that putting a shorter 1-2 mile run on the back of a lot of my long rides helped me get used to the feeling of running off the bike. We would also ride on Saturday and run long on Sunday which helped get used to the feeling as well.

One HIM brick workout which was a killer but I really liked was the triple brick:

Ride 18 miles
Run 30 minutes
Ride 18 miles
Run 20 minutes
Ride 18 miles
Run 10 minutes

That got me to almost HIM distance on the bike with about 5 miles of running (at my pace). I found it was a good way to get a "longer" run in after biking by breaking up the run into shorter segments. And by the final run my legs were ready to be done with the workout!

I think i am in the minority with my brick philosophy...but i like to run after almost all of my rides. Even if the run is only 10 minutes (which it usually is). Since i have started doing this a half year ago i have found i have a seamless transition and my HR stays in check...and i learn phyiscally...and maybe even more importantly,...mentally that i can run when i feel that i have nothing left...only to find out a short while in to the run that i really do have energy.

I know a lot of people do not do bricks...but for ME...i love it! Not to mention...it helps with practicing transitions

That is such a typical conversation with people.  "What's in an Ironman?" "What order are the events?" "What distances?" "Is it in Hawaii?" "How long will it take?"

It is ironic how people always make excuses why they "can't" do one.  But then there are people out there who would otherwise have a real excuse, like no legs or one arm, who are passing you during the run.  I might be a bit blunt (or maybe it's rude) to people sometimes and I correct them: "It's not that you can't do it, you just decided it's not worth trying to do it... there's nothing wrong with that, but you shouldn't say you can't, you just have other priorities in life you'd rather do."  I've been saying the same thing to my mom who's only 54 when she makes comments about the distances I run.  After two years of that, she's now out walking 2-3miles/day with my dog and even has started to jog short sections playing with the dog.  She still makes some of the comments, but she's also noticed that she now only has to take her blood pressure medicine once every 3-4 days instead of everyday... and it's only been 2 months.

I'll step off the soap box, the "I can't" mentality really annoys me.  I have no problem if someone tells me "I don't want to" and will leave it at that, but saying "I can't" really gets under my skin.

PennState - 2010-10-06 6:21 PM Had a solid run last evening. How's the training going for everyone else?

Having a good week for the most part.  This is the time in IM training where I struggle with the motivation to do the 2nd workout of the day.  Would much rather go home and relax a bit.  But it is only 4 weeks and a couple days so the end is in sight!!

IMWI just opened up some additional slots for Military/Police/Firefighters/EMTs.  Race next year is on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.  I have until the 15th to submit for a slot.  It is tempting, we shall see.

I'm just working my training programs but nothing too major as far as working out goes. I have just started my 1/2 marathon program and I have 14 miles to run this week. I'm also still trying to get in my 100 miles on the bike which I might be 10-15 miles short this week on that but I don't really care. I just want to get as much exercise in as I can.

We had a huge weather week her in AZ with hurricane winds, pouring rain and hail. We even had 4 tornadoes which is extremely rare for us. Needless to say, it has a been a busy week for me working in the news.

I am actually really excited to do the run volume that my program has on it. I have neglected the run so much because I sucked at it that it really hurt my in races. I don't want that to slow me down anymore so I'm really focusing on it for the next 6 months or so.

IMAZ should be great this year and the lake should be up and running in the next few weeks.

I just started running and cycling again this week and so far so good.  I'm not as slow as I thought I would be but I really just want to log in miles and not get hurt again.

I've had to change my philosophy about training from 'how fast can I get to 100+ mpw on the bike and 25 mpw on the run' to just holding my training at about 6.5 hours per week.  My plan now is to run low volume 6 days a week starting at 10 mpw, and ending at 18 mpw (6 days, 3 miles).  I'm planning on only cycling 3 days a week, at most 66 mpw (10,20,36), and even then I may cut short the long ride.

I'll hold these numbers until at least January and then if I feel comfortable going up I will, but I'm not going to pressure myself to up my training levels until April or so.

I sent off an e-mail today asking about the application process for the IMWI protective service slots.  If I get one I'm in.  Fred this is all your fault!  Seriously it would be really cool and a great honor to race in this capacity.

If only we had a former USMC member, who is a member of this mentor group, who could apply, that would be really cool.  Anyone fit that description?

Sounds like a great plan and it seems like the training is coming along nicely. Hurrican winds are fun to ride in, as long as your getting a push
