25 yard pools suck!  Too small!  There aren't any other options around here either, so I'm stuck with this one.  The only positive to this gym is that no one around here swims, so I have the whole pool to myself.  LOL

3 x 1000 (alternating 100 fast/100 moderate)....thought it would be a cake walk, but it was really tiring!!!  I need to decide what constitutes a moderate pace for me, as it seems to either be all out or easy.  Hmm.  I'm glad I have this swim workout again next week, so I can do it better.

Recovery run later today.  I'm taking the kids to the lake later this morning.  They've been begging me, but I've been putting it off because it's so hard to do by myself.  4 kids + giant pool bag + sand toys + having 10 sets of eyes so these kids don't drown.......I figured it was time to give it a shot.  Monday we went to the pool, yesterday we went to the zoo, and now the lake.....ahh, to be a kid again

I need some help with ideas.  This September is the 50th anniversary of the Hartford Track Club.  On September 22, I'm RDing (and the Hartford Track Club is sponsoring) a half marathon so we decided to have our anniversary celebration post -race (we figured we'll get more people and it will have more of a party atmosphere).  Race starts at 9 a.m.  Awards ceremony and celebration begins at 11:30 a.m.

Question for y'all -- what do  you think I can do to make this super special?  So far we have the half marathon (which includes a shirt and medals, both of which have the 50th anniversary memorialized on them), we're going to do a big post-race spread -- baked chicken, red potato, salad, apples and dips, cider donuts, apple pie and apple cider.  My mom thinks we should do commemorative water bottles for everyone as well and I'm trying to pull together lots of good prizes for a raffle (I'm thinking we give everyone 5 tickets and let them put the tickets in for the prizes they want -- I just need to work on prizes).  We'll also honor the founding members at the award ceremony and present them with something -- not sure what yet.

Any other ideas on ho I can make this a big event?

You have any old photos you can use, or just photos throughout the years?  Could blow some up or make a display on the awards table.

Here's the e-mail I just sent to the people involved with planning.  Any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

9 a.m. - Hogsback Half Marathon (Race shirts and medals will include the phrase "Hartford Track Club * 50 Years Running * 1962-2012."  My mother had the suggestion that we also do water bottles for the finishers with the HTC logo and the "50 Years Running" language.  I'm going to price them out as well.

10:30  a.m. - Post Race Celebration begins.

I think we should do "real" food.  I good contacts with a catering company in Waterbury and I would my father pick u pat food at 9:30 a.m. and bring it up to the Goodwin Dam.  I'm thinking baked chicken, red potatoes, salads along with the "normal" post race baked goods.  The catered food would run us about $400, which isn't a huge expense (and obviously the cost of the other food would go down accordingly).

In addition to the food, I think we should do a raffle in which each person attending gets 5 raffle tickets and can put their name in for various prizes (a "teacup" raffle).  Winner will need to be present to get their prize.  We have some prizes we can put out and I'm working on soliciting donation for other prizes.  Runners, spectators and guests will all receive tickets.

Wall of honor.  I think we should start three "clubs" of Hartford Track Club Members: Founding members/Gold club and then the silver club for people who have been members for 25 years and the Nutmeg club for people who have been members for 10 years (I'm open to other suggestions for the 10 year club).  I think we should publish the names on the website, in the newsletter, at the celebration and honor each of the members at the celebration itself.  We can probably use the race medals, if I can get the design right.

In addition Lee mentioned at the meeting that he had a lot of memorabilia.  I think we should have an exhibit on the history of HTC.  Lee -- would you be interested in pulling something together?

11 a.m. -- Family Race

I think we have a .5 mile family across the dam.  No entry fee, every child finisher gets a medal, the finish line will be next to the actual race finish line.

11:30 a.m. -- Awards Ceremony & 50th Anniversary Awards

I think we do the top three male and female, then acknowledge the 10, 25, and founding members, then do the age group awards.  I'm wondering if we also have "special" awards for people who have made significant contributions over the past 50 years.  My knowledge only goes back 7 years -- Peter you're in a better position to make suggestions on this one.

11:45 a.m. -- Raffle

Hey Kelly! First, great news on the shoulder. What ever you do don't every stop the exercises after you finish PT. I did something similar in High School during a Judo match and even to this day if I don't keep up with my exercises and do overuse exercises like playing softball I end up going back to PT or focus on my exercises again.

As far as the race, that sounds awesome so far! I would come race it if I was closer based on what you have there. Also the more children things you have to do might give incentive for families to stay around longer aftewards. I am not sure if you have like a moonbounce or anything like that for kids.

I like the idea of water bottles of you can swing it financially.  I collect coffee mugs because I love coffee so much, and I think a lot of people do the same with water bottles from big races and special events (yes, I have a Chicago Triathlon water bottle AND a coffee mug....I know, I know, I'm a dork, but I'm cool with it).

Food is a biggie.  It sounds like you have good eats, and that's important.  I would sign up for a race if I knew they were having roast chicken, red potatoes, and salad after  A bowl of watermelon and some pretzels isn't special; you know?  Plus, this is a race to honor the history of the track club.  Right?

Wall of members sounds great.  Scott had a great idea with the picture montage video of past races/history.  Everyone loves those, and they get all maudlin and happy.  It doesn't take long to make either.

Sounds like you have a great event planned!

I am doing 70.3 Raleigh if Eagleman doesn't get its act together and put up a registration date soon.  We'll take the family to vacation in the Carolinas the week after the race.  I grew up staying at Bald Head, so I'm familiar.  Registration is August 31!

Jen - coffee mug is a great suggestion.  I too like coffee mugs, and bought one at Vineman.

(I still stand by my beer pint glass suggestion from last time - I love those too!  But I might have a beer problem.)

Raleigh?! Did you say Ironman in Raleigh? How did I miss that? My wife's family lives about 30-40 mins east of Raleigh. That would be something to consider...

Travel coffee cup>>>>>>water bottle.  Just sayin.  Probably pricey though.

Good swim this morning.  Not sure whether to be frustrated or encouraged.  LOL.  I will say that I find myself falling in and out of a rhythm a lot.  Maybe a ton more time is really what I need.

Jen- not sure about Eagleman. I'm not sure I can do that distance yet or if I should do another year of short course. Kelly- do you know anything about Rev3 Maine? I love their lobster claw medal and we are thinking of going back to Maine next summer.

That medal appears to have potential as a bottle opener.

Kelly I'll email you tomorrow where I got my water bottles for my race. They were only $1. Pretty basic water bottle that will fit on a bike, and it included a logo. Just a black logo though. Nothing fancy. But can't beat $1

Bike is not super hilly, but its a lot hillier than Eagleman.  Eagleman, however, is always super hot.  Rev 3 Maine has to potential to be pretty temperate, although the swim could be a bit cool depending on the year.

Intervals on the bike this morning + some Z3 running later on today.  Hit my intervals on the bike, so I'm a happy camper.  Body feels recovered after last weekend.  I'm ready to attack my training sessions.

It's raining so I'll be spending the day unpacking boxes (and breaking up fights among the kids).  I am summer girl.  I LOVE it, and I am at my happiest/best when it's warm outside.  Having said that, the kids are going crazy with the unstructured, endless days, and I'm ready to move along to school start.  Any other parents feeling the same?

I've been so scatterbrained lately that I forgot to put $ in Madge's tooth fairy pillow 2 night ago.  Yesterday morning I experienced the wrath of Madge.  I had to explain that the tooth fairy probably didn't know we'd moved and must have gone to the old house.  We wrote a note to the fairy and put in the mailbox, explaining that Madge has a new address and a new room.  LMAO  My husband put an extra buck in the pillow, bringing the total to $3.  What ever happened to just getting a bunch of coins?

so when is a deal not a good deal?

When you pick up some light action speedplay pedals off of craiglist for about $30.

Well imagine my surprise when I go for a ride and the cleats from my ZEROS won't unclip the light actions without spinning your leg about 90 degrees!

Oops

It's probably too late to get it done but a cool idea would be a custom hydration running belt with the event info on it. Sweat Vac does cool custom running hats.
