Having been out of it for only a few days because of the flu...swimming was the most exhausting thing for me vs run and bike. Can't really say anything that helps Matt but I can empathize on a much smaller scale and it is very frustrating. If we all could have a crystal ball to provide some assurances that these bumps are not a big deal in the grand scheme - perhaps that would help. |

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED It is absolutely nuts here this morning. One of the bombers dead the other wounded and on the run. They were throwing bombs out of their car while being chased. 8 towns people are not allowed to leave their houses. That's probably close to a million people. A MIT police officer is dead. They killed the bomber by hitting him with an SUV and then filling him with bullets. All the colleges are shutdown. The MBTA (train and bus system) shut down. All the business told not to open. I used to travel to client sites in several of my jobs so I'm watching the news and know all of the streets. The two bombers are from Chechnya. I don't know if they're Muslim or if it's a political agenda but they obviously had planned for the possibility that they would get caught and weren't going down without a fight. I don't know politically why Chechnya would have an issue with the US but I'm sure that's going to come out if this wasn't a Jihad event. |

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED OK this was definitely Islamic extremists. There's speculation they were going to blow up something at MIT and the campus police officer tried to stop them and died in the line of duty. My heart goes out to his family. With Chechnya having so many issues with Moscow off another large country is pretty much going to spell their doom. There's no doubt they'll take out the training camps there and probably have some help. |

Bumps are not a big deal as long as you don't let them turn into mountains. My biggest issue with athletes is not that they're not willing to do the work, its that they aren't willing to back off when they're dealing with life issues, sickness, injury, etc. As I've said many times, getting in a single training session is not going to make your season but forcing yourself through a single training session when you are sick, dragging, etc., can break you. |

Good luck, Larkin! This is the Parkway Classic, isn't it? I'd come out and run this with you, but I think 10 miles might kill me right now, and also I'm running a 10K tomorrow morning myself. It does look like it's going to be great weather... |

Thanks for this, both of you. I know taking the long view is the right thing to do, but you're right, it's really hard to restrain myself. I've decided, though, that I'm not going to push hard to do a full-out training schedule before this race. I'm just going to do shorter or easier workouts between now and then, and then just go for the experience on race day. Since it's the first one, I don't really have any performance target I'm trying to beat yet, anyway. I've got another event scheduled for two weeks later, so maybe I'll be able to push harder by then. |

Regular 211 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED I went to the pool this morning to try out the new wetsuit my sweetie gave me for Christmas. I was struck by a couple things - (1) how much more buoyant I am in it than without it; and (2) how much more difficult it was to move my arms and shoulders in it than without it. I'm confident the sizing is right - I'm actually on the small end of the fit range for this size - but my arms and shoulders were really tired after just swimming a few laps. I found a thread at SlowTwitch that said you need to be really careful to pull it up high in the crotch to give your shoulders freedom of movement, so maybe that was what the issue was. I'm also realizing that I wasn't warmed up and that I'm not as strong as I have been because I've been sick. Even with these excuses, though, I'm a little nervous. Have any of you veterans experienced this at all? Is this just because I'm not used to swimming in a wetsuit, and it'll go away as I get more practice? [Third post in a row - sorry. I've been saving up...] Edited by Kuma 2013-04-20 7:00 AM |

Expert 1481 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED The wetsuit will break in and become easier on the arms. You'll also get used to swimming higher in the water. For me the wetsuit corrects my deficiencies so I love it. My first real year doing tri's I did a one mile swim race as my only warmup to my first two Olympics that year. I got in another 6 warmups before my 3rd Olympic that year. Year two, last year, I wanted to have a lot more OWS under my belt and did somewhere around 40-50 OWS. If you can I would get out there as soon as it's warm enough as much as you can. You'll get so much more confident and the spotting will become second nature. |

Saturday is usually my day off, but I had a "mom's" trip with some friends who like to hike... didn't realize how hard core they were and we ended up hiking for 6! hours (only a few short breaks)!... was fabulous... but I think there should be no long run for me tomorrow |

Matt...I am confused....you are not going to push it but you have a 10 miler too? Sorry to confuse matters. Mine was a 10K this morning - Larkin's was the 10 miler, also in the DC area this morning. I woke up feeling ok, but made the decision that I was going to follow how I felt and even walk if I needed to do that. That worked pretty well. I ended up running it in 49:06. It was hard, though. I could really tell I'm not as fit as I was a month ago. Splits were 1. 7:43; 2. 7:33; 3. 7:41; 4. 7:57; 5: 8:07; 6. 8.21; 6.2. 1:41. Overall pace - 7:54/mile. I faded toward the end, despite a fast, downhill course. What makes me feel good about it is that the overall time wasn't as bad as I expected given recent health issues, and even more importantly, I felt good after the race was over. A couple weeks ago I ran a shorter distance and felt trashed at the finish. I think this must mean I'm coming out of my health funk. Still planning to take it easy between now and my first tri on May 5, but hopefully I'll be better after that. Separately, I think I'm going to sign up to do the Savageman Olympic in mid-September. Has anyone else done this? Everyone seems to rave about it... |

Extreme Veteran 826 Bristow | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED So it was a good race today. I PR'd the course and my ten mile time today. I felt stronger than I thought I would be. I really like this course. It is rolling hills and an actual net downhill for the whole course. It starts at Mount Vernon and heads into Old Town Alexandria. My splits where 7:52 7:38 7:54 7:56 7:54 7:44 7:52 7:48 7:50 7:20. Overall a 7:47 pace. The goal was 1:20 so overall a good race. There was a lot Boston support and fund raising which was cool. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED Solid day riding today ... more confidence too. Was supposed to do 1 loop of IMWI course, but was cold and raining, so NO. Did local hilly ride. 45 miles. 1100 feet of climbing, about 35 degrees with windchill. COLD WEATHER GEAR is a must and saved my today (thank you pearl izumi for having everything I need yesterday!). Clothes after were soaked and weight about 2 lbs. Very happy with effort and that I was able to keep climbing til the end. |
