Happy Birthday Mitch!  Enjoy the walk with the family! I like your approach to training listening to the body, but also maintaining solid discipline. The long runs are what is hard too, because of the recovery time. Hope you find your formula.

Matthew, watch some videos of people crying with happiness as they cross the finish line of IM or Marathon.  This works for me at least...

Just got up and had breakfast, it is raining and my legs are still tired from the long run. Decisions, decisions. Might go on the bike for a change.

 Hope you find your formula.

I think this is a key lesson.  We are all different and I don't think there is a cookie cutter approach.  You ultimately do have to find what works for you.  Can't be afraid to experiment as long as you learn from your successes and failures.

Today I received my new speedplay pedals in the mail, after stalking them since Thursday. I was so excited to go home, put them on my bike and the cleats on my new shoes. I left work early for lunch, I could not wait.  Such a happy moment to find them  sitting carelessly in my mailbox. I was so excited I opened the package right there.

I immediately sped home, ran inside, found a screwdriver and got to work.

I am not an engineer, not a mechanic, in fact I freely admit that my skills are poor. My wife has told me that hell for me would to be a handyman or a plumber.

So I am fighting the first cleat for thirty minutes and I could not get it on. I then realized that it came with shim's on it already. So I took off the second set of shims, and assembled the cleat. I then proceeded to put the second cleat on. So, proud of my accomplishment, I start playing with on of the pedals to see how it worked, when I realized I put the cleats on the wrong shoes.

I thought no problem, took the cleats off and put them of the correct shoes. I again start fiddling with them when I realized I put them on upside down. I tore them apart again, put them together again. My wife then asked is your life insurance paid up, because I can see you face planting on the highway and getting run over by a truck.

That is when I decided to go back to work. I did break a sweat, mostly out of self irritation, so does that count as a bike workout?

I just got internet access again so finally able to update workouts over past week.  We are in Seagrove Florida (near Destin) for spring break.  Our condo looks over the Gulf of Mexico.  It is quite lovely.

Oops sorry, I hope not.  But much more then being a matter of luck/superstition, you should believe that when you put in the hard work and fully commit to pushing yourself both physically and mentally beyond what is expected, very good things will happen Wink

^^^ This is really funny James! Thanks for a laugh!

Just got back from a 1hr MTB ride in a pouring rain and gusty wind. The alternative was a run, but the legs were still tired from Sunday run.
The front tire has a way of creating a shower right in my face on days like this. Lovely.

30min run last night. Bike fitting tonight on my new bike. Hope that can be the motivation i need to have another big week.

Thanks Mark - I will have a look but i think its taken up so much of my time and my thinking and its taken so long to get here. every time i run or ride for longer then an hour i feel bad for leaving my wife with the kids or not spending enough time with the kids. I just need to keep pushing.

Happy Birthday Mitch.  Hope you enjoy your rest day, and do something enjoyable with the free time...

Today I went for a bike ride with my Dad.  I enjoy these rides as I get to spend some time with my Dad, while getting out and doing an easy ride.  They're always on the hybrid because my Dad doesn't have a road bike, and we spend a considerable amount of time on cycle tracks with variable surfaces.

Joe P - you are a machine...

Matthews - I always find Team Hoyt quite motivational.

Long slow run today. Just over 10 miles in a little under 2 hours. Heart rate stayed down (ish) and run felt ok. Followed it with an ice bath although kind of wished I hadn't

Thanks to all who recommended the speedplay zeros. Special thanks to JoeP I rode around a parking lot first, and learned to clip in and out of them. I took my first ride with them 12.5 in 37:30. Since I am posting this, I did not die, split my face open or get run over by a truck.

Back from Disney, and sad to say did not get a chance to work out. Partly crazy schedule, partly that after biking on Friday I had what I could only describe as a "groin pull" sensation. So decided to give it a few days rest (the fact that I was at Disney made that decision much easier). Today was the first day that I didn't fell any pain, so back to "work" tomorrow. Lucky for me this week is recovery, so will take it easy.

Not sure what is wrong but I have lost my mojo. Last few workouts have been a battle tonight a 30min run that was a struggle from the time I left home. Every time I go for a workout it's because I have to not because I love it at the moment. Doing the challenge is good as it makes me get out of bed to swim and then run/ride at night. Hopefully it comes back to me soon as I only have 6 weeks or so to my race and starting to question myself already. Have I done enough, can I do it, how will I feel feel.

Matthew,

These kind of funks are pretty common with me. Part of it is just me. I can be kind of grumpy. (Just ask my wife and kids!) But part of it is the training. Toning it down for a bit helps I think.

My happiest race was a Sprint tri last August. I was training for an early October marathon and hadn't swum or biked at all since June. But I did a 5 minute improvement over the last year and just felt wonderful. Basically, I went into the race not expecting much, outperformed my low expectations, and felt great.

On the other hand, and I'm NOT fishing for compliments here, I'm kind of bummed about my Saturday race. I ran 395 miles, including six 60 mile or greater weeks, in the 7 weeks between my half marathons and improved by 44 seconds. All that for 44 seconds? Intellectually, I believe the conditions were worse, but the idea is similar to yours. Whenever you work out a lot, there are bound to be times when you say "Why the hell am I doing this?"

Usually I push through it and it becomes very enjoyable again. Sometimes I need to tone it down, or do what I like until that happens.

So I would suggest to try both, one then the other. Try pushing through and see if it just becomes the case that you find yourself enjoying it again. If that doesn't work, take a few days off. Your race will be practically the same either way.

ernestov - 2012-03-19 11:23 AM Happy Birthday Mitch! Now go celebrate by running forty one times around the block, haha! Wink

Believe me - I googled birthday challenges - the one I saw said I needed to swim 4 miles.  Run 1 mile and bike 41 miles.  I was pretty much done a swim 4 miles.  In the spirit of trying to adhere to my training plans and goals I am resting today.  probably will go for a walk with my 2 year old, lovely wife, and schnauzer.

Why don't you reverse and make it easier- Run 4 Km, Swim 1 KM, Bike 41 Km, and drink 41 shots (funny how a shot is a shot no mater where you live)

Happy belated B-Day!

What is it about the workout that you are not enjoying? Is it the workout itself? The reason I ask is because althought new to all this, I have had two instances of "not loving this". However in my case, its the waking up ealry that burns me out (the only time that I can workout regularly is at 5:30 am - and I am a night owl); once I am actually working out I love it, and I specially love the feeling after the workout - knowing that the day hasn't started yet for many people and I already swam/bike/ran xx minutes.

As a noob, is a trial and error to see what works and what you can sustain for long periods of time. What I do when feeling funky is to take 2-3 days off during a week, or plan a couple of night/lunch workouts to give me a little more sleep. Althought we constantly talk about giving the body time to rest and adapt, at least for me the most difficult part is giving the brain time to rest so as not to burn out. And I also found that missing a workout due to unforeseen events is not mentally the same as planning to skip one. The mental break (at least for me) of the later is significantly greater.

- Samy, glad you enjoyed your time with Mickey and friends, now time to train again!

- Matthews, I've been on your shoes several times in terms of loosing my mojo to keep up with the training.  However, I try to look for ways to get my self pumped again (like interacting with the cool members of this great group) and then you get back on track!  Here are two good videos from the 2011 and 2010 Ironman World Championships which are always fun to watch (I particularly enjoy the age groupers stories):

Today I did a 7.9 Mi, 1:13 min run + 50 min indoor bike workout

Thanks all for the advice. I will give some of them a go. Because I did nothing this morning I am starting to feel edgy and I won't be able to do much tonight so tomorrow hopefully tomorrow I will be chomping at the bit to go.
I have watched and read the book on Team Hoyt and yes it is motivational.
I'm not sure what is making me feel down the last few days have all been running days and have been sore each time, Saturday i set a goal to achieve a 21km run but then run out of fluid and hydrated and on Thursday i had a 90km ride planned. Managed to do 80km but was sore and tired after so I guess there also those question marks going around in my head. The idea is as much as I need to follow a plan you still need to enjoy going out there and doing it not feeling that you have.

Since I am posting this, I did not die, split my face open or get run over by a truck.

Off to a good start!  Have you fallen over sideways yet?  I did fine on my first ride - made it all the way round with no problems.  At the end I cycled onto our drive, unclipped my left foot and tried to put it down, only to find that my weight was on the right.  I found myself lying on my side feeling very embarrassed...

I agree that you need to enjoy training overall, but some sessions are always going to be hard and feel less fun.  But of course at times during the race (especially longer stuff) you're not going to feel like you're having fun.  I think sometimes a hard training session helps prepare you for that.  And getting it wrong (fluid/hydration) just means that you'll make better decisions on the day.

I've had a look at your training logs and you're way better prepared than I was for my HIM last year.  I don't know if you have a time goal in mind, but you'll have no problem finishing, and hopefully will enjoy it as well.

My main motivation for training this year has been thinking back to how great I felt when I finished the HIM last year.  I also remember running past my Dad with 2 miles to go and saying "I just want it to be over now".  But that part fades into the background ;-)

Yes, but not on this bike or with clipless pedals. It was on my old bike and I was stopped at a stoplight in front of my office. I forgot to take my foot out of the toeclips when I stopped. I fell over onto my side. Luckily it was on a Sunday evening, so nobody saw. It was bad enough coming home bloody and looking like Christie Wellington in Hawaii this year and having to explain it to my family. Teenaged girls can be ruthless.
