So I got a blister today right where my big toe bends at the foot. It has only happened one other time. Anybody have this happen and might know the cause?

kidtri33 - 2013-04-21 5:46 PM So it was a good race today. I PR'd the course and my ten mile time today. I felt stronger than I thought I would be. I really like this course. It is rolling hills and an actual net downhill for the whole course. It starts at Mount Vernon and heads into Old Town Alexandria. My splits where 7:52 7:38 7:54 7:56 7:54 7:44 7:52 7:48 7:50 7:20. Overall a 7:47 pace. The goal was 1:20 so overall a good race. There was a lot Boston support and fund raising which was cool.

Nice job, Larkin.  You were really consistent, and when you weren't, the inconsistencies were on the fast side.  That's great!  I need to take running lessons from you...

Yeh, pretty much. It only started out bad and cold for the first few miles. Really was not as bad as I thought it would be.

Larkin, hope your race goes well. Please update.

Matt...I am confused....you are not going to push it but you have a 10 miler too?

Sorry to confuse matters.  Mine was a 10K this morning - Larkin's was the 10 miler, also in the DC area this morning.

I woke up feeling ok, but made the decision that I was going to follow how I felt and even walk if I needed to do that.  That worked pretty well.  I ended up running it in 49:06.  It was hard, though.  I could really tell I'm not as fit as I was a month ago.  Splits were 1. 7:43; 2. 7:33; 3. 7:41; 4. 7:57; 5: 8:07; 6. 8.21; 6.2. 1:41.  Overall pace - 7:54/mile.  I faded toward the end, despite a fast, downhill course.

What makes me feel good about it is that the overall time wasn't as bad as I expected given recent health issues, and even more importantly, I felt good after the race was over.  A couple weeks ago I ran a shorter distance and felt trashed at the finish.  I think this must mean I'm coming out of my health funk.  Still planning to take it easy between now and my first tri on May 5, but hopefully I'll be better after that.

Separately, I think I'm going to sign up to do the Savageman Olympic in mid-September.  Has anyone else done this?  Everyone seems to rave about it...

Nice job, Matt!  Very speedy.  I hope you're starting to feel better.

Kelly - If I transition to a different shoe with a smaller drop (like the Mirage)....what is the protocol for breaking in the shoe?  Start by using it on my short, easy runs only?  Jump in and use it for every run?  Don't want to get injured just because I switch shoes.

Yep. Short runs first and then stretch out the time.

I run with Kinvara's and love them. They really helped with my cadence and over-striding. Once you make the move I don't think you'll go back to a regular shoe. I tried running with some true minimalist does and found that to be too much of a burden on the body. I still use them for the occasional beach or trail run but no road miles.

Thanks Everyone!

Matt, let me know anytime you want to run haha! I believe if I looked back at the course the faster miles, except the last one, were probably on more of a downhill but I will take it Monitoring my cadence really helps and the performance pacer on the watch does as well.

Jen, I am in the same boat as you. I have been using them on my shorter ZR runs. Eventually I will move them into full rotation but I might as well get every mile out of these ASICS I am in now

Start with it during short easy runs, then work into it gradually.

kidtri33 - 2013-04-21 9:03 PM So I got a blister today right where my big toe bends at the foot. It has only happened one other time. Anybody have this happen and might know the cause?

Is there something in your shoe (e.g. random stitching)?

Oh I also forgot to add it is on the bottom of my foot, not the top.

Not that I know of but I thought about it some more and the only odd thing I can think of is it has only happened with the thorlos experia socks. For all the Tri's I ran I used smartwools and I am pretty sure for MCM I used smartwools as well because Sandy was rolling in and I know those socks do much better when they get wet. So maybe it is the socks?

Sockless.  Build up callouses.  Problem solved.

Thanks Scott I don't know why I didn't think of that Seriously though I did try this last year and my shoe ended up bloody. It could have been those shoes though.

This great shows nearly perfect execution for a 10 mile / 13.1 race.  Popped the HR up right and the beginning and continued to stimulate the HR throughout the race.  Very nicely done.

You will get blisters as your feet toughen up but I run sockless up to HIM distance.  I'm going with socks for IMTX.

Scott, I will try with these shoes and see how it goes. I need to start now while it is a little cooler and not so much sweat making it worse.

Cool stuff. That just seems like such a long time to have that high of a heart rate when you haven't done it in a while.

That last spike into 190 was up the last steep short hill, I felt that pretty good and had to collect myself. I felt really comfortable for most of the race actually. I was surprised to see how well I slowly rose through the whole race. You may be right, I don't remember the last time I was at that HR for that long of a time. However if I didn't have the HR monitor and was going off of RPE then I would have felt good and continued at that pace anyway. So from your take, I am assuming it was too much too soon? What is the harm or even possible benefit from this?

I defer to the pros but I would think that if you can sustain effort at a high heart rate, great. You didn't have anything after, so floor it. I would guess the downside is not being able to sustain the effort and crashing and burning later in the run or bike etc.

Or one's heart could explode. But, again, I'm not an expert.

No you ran a great race. I was more lamenting pushing that hard for that long when you haven't in a bit. My last HM was 14 months ago and I think my average HR was 175. Doing HIMs you're pushing for a longer period but never at that all out level or maybe just the last few miles if you have it in you.
