Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mitch, so sorry I missed your birthday. Hope it was great! Matthew, funks are normal. Twice when I was really tired before my races, these guys told me to take the WHOLE week off. I did and I had lots of energy after that. Jim, I love my speedplays. Ernesto et al, question. We now have a Computrainer at the gym and I'm going to get set up on it tonight. Should I take my road bike that has been Retul fit or my tri-bike that has been hand fit, but will probably get a Retul fit next week? I like them both equally. Opinions please? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Finally got my 14 mile run in today. There's nothing special about this run, except that due to time constraints and disorganisation I've been planning to run that far for about a month, but I keep finding that I don't have time. Also, following on from Jennie's success, I thought I'd compare my runs for this year. I looked at all the runs I've done over 11 miles, and it's really noticeable that there's a gradual improvement. I've compared them below: 5th Jan: 11.07miles, Ave HR=146, Ave pace=12.18min/mile I'm really pleased with that. Hopefully the improvement will continue. - Joe P S 8/ B 11/ R 9 Total = 28; 30:55:05" |

Longer distance, faster pace, steady HR. Again, AWESOME! I think that is my favorite feature of Garmin Connect - the ability to very easily filter activities and then compare and contrast in an effort to find trends. |

I will tell you though that towards the beginning of the season you have to take the tri bike more, it works the hamstrings a bit more. In the other hand the tucked in position on the trainer gets old quickly unlike riding outdoors.Mitch, so sorry I missed your birthday. Hope it was great! Matthew, funks are normal. Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Have to admit... there are times I don't feel I belong on the forum. My heart and drive is there along with everyone ones's but my obligations to being a Mother always seem to take the front seat(as they should). This does require me to miss workouts that otherwise would be part of my life. I am hoping that after we return from the kids spring break and our trip to Chas I am able to get my workouts accomplished within the smallest amount of time. I may not work but some times I feel that others don't realize how many additional thing I have to do within that time.... from 8:30 until 3 I am non stop, while trying to fit in workouts, and running the home from top to bottom... After 3 the kids get home so I am all theirs. I am stating all of this because I may step out of my hopes for a half IM this year.. Two Tri athlets in a home with young children may very well be to much! Will keep you posted though out my decision..... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jen- We all have those points were we are overwhelmed, especially when out kids are young. I don't follow a specific plan, because I can't. I do set goals and plan my training week by week and sometimes day by day, depending on what I have going on. Now is a slow time for me. We are between sports, and this is a slow time for me at work. That will change next month when the snowbirds come home (retired people who split their time between Michigan and Florida, summer here winter there). I think we all understand that life happens, workouts get missed. You have had some difficult kid issues, so stay strong do what you can and the group is here. I have realized that more happens here than triathlon talk. Its a support group, a sounding board, a place to vent, and learn a few things. Do worry about us, do what you need to do, and we will be here. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jen I hear you about having kids at home etc. I may not be a Mum but have a stay at home wife looking after the kids as well and I know how busy it is. Can you try be more flexible with the work outs?? Jim be aware of the rides when you get more comfortable with the clip ins. The first hand full of rides you are very mindful of the clips but after awhile you forget them and then also forget to un clip. |

![]() I did a pose run class today in Seagrove Beach, Florida. It was interesting and i think helpful. however, as i am practicing the new pose technique my heart rate is higher than it has been. Video of my running really showed that i was heel striking and i am trying to change to midfoot striking. Jen, when my kids were younger i was unable to follow a consistent training schedule. I did not want to miss being with them as much as i could; i worked full-time. Now that our 3 are teenagers there are many more opportunities for me to leave home without ever being missed. it may be helpful to remember that our life is a series of phases with different emphasis needed at different times. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Back on the horse! 48 min swim this morning. Jen, I know how you feel. Both my wife and I work full time, and with a 1 and a 3 yr old, once we get back home is kid's time. I either train at 5:30 am or, between kids and normal household chores, is a 50/50 I can get a workout at any other time. This week has been particularly bad, with my weekend trip to Orlando and my older kid with an ear infection, it definitely forces you to be very flexible with your training plan. But you definitely belong in this forum, so don't deprive us of your presence (and besides, you are beating me on the challenge, so if you don't belong, what does that say about me?) - Gabe S 7 / B 12/ R11; Total = 30; 42:38:38 |

You will have YOUR time, even if it's not this year. Don't fret. Do what you can and it will all work out. I have figured out that most people feel they have not prepared well enough for their race. It's tough balancing it all. I planned to do a tough track workout this morning preceeded by a swim. Neither my attitude or my legs were feeling it this morning so I stayed in bed until 7 instead of getting up at 4:45 to workout. I'm lucky that my job is flexible enough that I can dissapear for an extra 40 minutes to get my swim in around midday. Probably best that I rearrange my cycling and running workouts for the week to ensure my legs recover enough. It's all one big balancing act - work, family, life and fitness. I struggle most with feeling guilty when I skip a workout. I absolutely feel like I've let myself down and its incredibly tough getting msyelf to realize that sometimes the best course of action is to skip a workout. I will say you have to keep it all in perspective and realize that some goals have to wait until they fit in your life. My wife has made it clear that she has no interest in supporting an ironman bid at this time. She knows that I want to do it at some point but it will have to wait until my 2 year old is more independent - and I am fine with that. My wife and kid's well being is always more important. So I will focus on short course events and maybe a half ironman over the next couple seasons and longer running events (half and full marathons). I honestly can devote at most 10 hours a week and that's pushing it. So with that budget of time that's what works. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jen, of course you belong on the forum. It's not about how much you do, or who wins the challenges, it's about being part of the group, and providing help and support for everyone when they need it. I know how hard it is to get stuff done during the day. I actually think I find it easier sometimes to get my workouts done when I'm working, as i can't delay or get distracted by other things. I find the structure of fitting things around work easier than having to make my own structure and then try to stick to it. As far as your decision whether or not to do the HIM, do whatever feels like the right decision for you. I can tell you from my experience that you don't have to be super fit to complete it, but if you're struggling with consistent training then maybe this isn't the year for it. With everything that's going on with your son, I'm sure you've got a lot on your plate. I guess the question is, do you find training a relief from the stresses of life, or is it another stress on it's own? If it's another stress, then that's probably the decision made for you. Whatever you choose to do we'll support you. That's what we're here for |

Jen, we are not letting you go anywhere away from this forum as you are an important part of "Ernesto's little mafia" We've all been in your shoes at some point in time in terms of personal life challenges and we also have to remember that we are not Pro's and that we are not getting paid to do this (nor are we going to loose any major sponsors). It is more of a lifelong complement to our lives and it is very nice to be able to share and learn with this group as we move into new uncharted territory. So hang in there and don't worry about the HIM if you decide not to do it as there are many races going on all the time (especially in your neck of the woods)
