Y'all might not remember me.  I'm signed up for IMLP this summer, but have been sidelined by a small, benign brain tumor.  Kind of like that pebble in the road when you're out training, and you hit it just wrong and . . . Cry

Tumor was diagnosed in January.  It's small, it's benign (won't spread), it's slow growing, but it's in a nasty spot wedged between my brain stem and my inner ear.  I had Cyberknife radiation treatment for the thing in March and still thought I might make IMLP, but my normally low blood pressure shot up after treatment and has refused to come down.  So today is the day that I'm sending out the emails letting folks know that IMLP is a no-go for me this year.  2011?  Not sure . . .

I've been kind of depressed and not really in triathlon mode, and not on BT for months, but today I'm stopping the pity party and working on Plan B for the summer.  Lots of sprints, maybe some training for a big HIM in the fall.

Will likely be cancelling my motel reservation within the next couple days. Small, cheap kitchenette in Upper Jay for a week?  Let me know if anyone's interested in picking up the reservation and I'll coordinate with you.

Even a "small, benign brain tumor" can have huge affects on a life.  I am happy to hear that you are keeping such a positive outlook.  Keep it up.

LazyMarathoner - 2010-04-26 6:59 PM 416.65 bike miles Missing my long ride last weekend due to weather and this weekend due to work travel have taken me out of the challenge. I have a couple rides on the schedule this week including a long one Friday so at least I'll end with a solid month thanks to you guys giving me a push.On a celebratory note, I ran 12 continuous pain-free miles this morning! This is my longest since last August so I'm thrilled.Papson, hang in there and congrats on your start today. I didn't run a step for over 4 months and was able to make my way back slowly, you will as well!

Great news!

Thanks for all your words of encouragement.  That's what my coach/mentor said yesterday . . . "Maybe 2011?"

Mmmm . . . Honey/Sugar Smacks.  Don't know how long it's been since I've eaten those . . . that's because I would eat the whole box, too.  I've always said that if someone would come out the night before the IM, and would lay down one Oreo cookie and a shot glass of milk at each milepost, I'd be a formidable contender!

Yup, Kathy G, it's an acoustic neuroma.  I had mine zapped rather than cut out.  We'll see how that works out for me!

I'll be following you all on race day.  Thanks again!

X 2!!!  You Rock LM!!  I know running is your original passion so I can empathize with how rough it must be to not be able to run for so long.  So happy for you!!!!

Gosh, a guy takes one vacation day and misses a bunch.

1. congrats on more continued success from all the race results of peeps in this thread.

2. sexy bikes are... sexy!

3. Endurance nation: I think they nailed it on the bike, and then made the mistake of applying the same thing to the run.  This ignores good info on how one would train for those things in a stand-alone fashion.  I do agree with their philosophy, however, that the first thing you need to do is figure out what can fit in your life, and then design your training around that.  Despite the inflammatory language, I also think their thoughts on race-execution would save LOTS of people a lot of misery on race day.

4. I love running in the snow... these were taken on some 10+ mile blizzrd runs here in MD this winter:

why do you think EN is off with their running approach?? Too much intensity or too short?

Jeebus, I can't write that well with a PEN!  That's some good aim/control my friend!

Indeed!  Oh and that little bit at the end... I don't have control issues, there was just a gust of wind at an inopprtune time (um, it was a frickin blizzard after all)

TMI alert - given the conditions I wasn't writing with a pen I was proud of either (um, it was a frickin blizard after all).

The EN bike plan = bike harder, not longer, for the same amount of work.  In my opinion that is a valid approach and they do throw in some ?longer? bikes as race day approaches.  They believe this will make you a faster cyclist than just slogging away for hours at conversation pace or slower... I agree.

But if you take the same plan for the run... run harder, not longer (or more)... especially if you don't have years of base running in your legs... I think you risk injury at worst, or short term improvements followed by a plateau at best.

I looked into EN last off season '08/'09 and was a member for awhile.

I followed a bunch of EN folk's training and they shared many of the members got run injuries.

I think Josh's take is spot on..bike hard as we recover well from that and run more often but be cautious with speed work.

Oh, turns out I will break 600 miles for the month. I'm at 550 and have 100 miles to put in before Thursday as we are away at a wedding this weekend.

thanks for the input Kathy and Josh. Yes, I can see that injury risk maybe high with their running program. I am really impressed with their bike training though. I bought a plan and think I am going to use it modifications to the run program as my body dictates. I believe they have made some modifications this year on there running intensity due to the feedback of past athletes.

PennState - 2010-04-27 2:47 PM All right, what's the consensus on the May challenges? Hours, miles, yards? As said, we can have multiple challenges in the same months. Just curious to see what people want?

I say we go with separate challenges

I like the multiple-challenge thing. Mix and match, pick and choose. Some might do one. Some might go for all of them!

Josh, you do have better handwriting than I do. Very impressive!

Also, congrats to all of you who are recovering from run injuries and were able to run long recently! I hope it continues to go well for you and you enjoy every mile from now on.

I've been away from a computer for days and am catching up, just wanted to say how happy I am to hear your tumor is benign and you're already moving ahead in a positive way. A healthy dose of perspective is often needed while training for an Ironman and your story provides just that. It will make me look differently at having had a lousy day of training or missing a workout because life got in the way. Just keep your eye on 2011!

Multiple options might be good. I'm a distance girl myself, prefer miles/yards/meters over time since we race in distances as well. I can firmly say I won't be joining any swim challenges though!
