Expert 4933 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN @Andrew: read your RR - man HMs are tough to pace - I've blown up around mile 10 twice (once pretty spectacularly). Have you thought of carrying liquid with you? I've done that in the past (as well as in training) and you just get used to the extra weight and then you won't have to rely on the course supplies as long as it's cool out. @Gretchen: Nice (metric plus) century, and usual you're the best good samaritan out there. @Robert: the heat has been no joke so far this year, run early and easy @Nicole: hope your trip is going well @Nathalie: looking forward to your race results this weekend, I'd love a short swim race Day off yesterday and then almost 4 miles outside this morning (65 degrees, about perfect for summer - weather changed dramatically in 48 hours). Main set was a bunch of 30 second kick-pace intervals (so just a little faster than R pace, maybe like 7:15/mile for me) then 45 minutes of lower body, core, and physical therapy work with The Wife. Weather is looking acceptable for Saturday so a Park Run is in store for me. I really want to see where I am running-wise and haven't raced an open 5K without stomach issues in a couple of years. |

Member 3149 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN I am here to report that at 8am this morning the weather in Carbondale is hotter than it is in Cairo at 4pm. AND...Cairo is currently experiencing 12% humidity, while Carbondale is checking in at a measly 78% (which will rise, as will the temperature!). It is beyond gross here, which is why I got up at 3:30am to get in my 1:04 Z3 interval run before going swimming (1500m recovery swim). I am OVER summer already. As you guys know, we had to put our dog to sleep last month. Let me tell you...I didn't think that dog did anything but sleep, but she was the best at keeping the wildlife at bay. Seriously, since she has been gone we have an entire family of groundhogs (aka woodchucks) living in our shed, we have a nested pair of birds with babies living in one of our patio chairs, and we have the resurgence of a hoard of squirrels living in our pin oak tree. We have also had deer inside our fenced yard for the first time ever (that I know of). It is like a mf Disney movie around here! I am just waiting for the moment they start to do housework! |

I think I've mentioned her before, but my daughter's former swim coach (and my Masters coach) is swimming from the Chesapeake Bridge to the Baltimore Inner Harbor today - 24 miles in about 12 hours or so. Her name is Katie Pumphrey if you want to look her up. All the local news outlets are covering it here, and they had a Harbor Swim over the weekend to celebrate the cleaning up of the harbor over the past ten years.
Whoa!!! That is amazing. I can't even fathom swimming that long. |

I'm annoyed by the difference between two "precise" tools that cost a lot of money. If they were cheap things, I'd understand, but come on! These things are expensive and they should work!! Mike--two sided and seemingly sending data to the watch independently, which is weird, My old Powertap pedals had the right as a slave of the left--right would send data to the left, which would send data to the watch. If this keeps up, I might actually have to read the directions that came with the pedals! |

Yes, dogs (and cats) do keep wildlife away, our neighbours have moles, rabbits, etc. We have a dog and 2 cats and none of the other mentioned. Went swim running tonight with the club, 1.2k run and 330m swim x 3 it’s nice and hot here (and by hot I mean not as hot as you guys have it, so it’s nice), perfect weather for a swim-run. |

Excellent translation of my rambling. Yes, A is what we want. But, because of what they are, how they're made and the fact that different options measure different things (pedal, crank, wheel, etc.) none of which is what we actually want to measure, which is the rider they're all B to some degree. |

Gretchen made a similar comment under my race report, and you both have a good point. Although I've never carried water in a race, I do regularly use a 500ml handheld bottle on training runs which is enough for a 2 hour run in most conditions. I'm not sure if it was the only factor in my pace fade, but judging from my post race bathroom visit I was definitely quite dehydrated. Thinking about it a bottle doesn't just give more opportunity for water, but it is a lot easier to get the water in your mouth at pace than from an aid station paper cup. Next race is Auckland Marathon (19 weeks away) so something for me to think about, I am a heavy sweater and both HM's this year I've faded in the 2nd half and finished dehydrated.... |

I have found that for longer distances, when I bring my own hydration and nutrition, I'm way more successful in the run/race. I don't have the risk of trying a new flavor at a race, and I know what I'm already used to. I'm also a heavy sweater, so having my own hydration is crucial for me too. |

Now the funny thing there is I'd be way less concerned about carrying hydration in an Ironman run. I'm going so slow at that point I'm always going to be walking aid stations so lots of time to get drink down. Ironman also has a lot more aid stations (IMNZ every 1.5 miles approx) so there's a lot more support than a typical stand alone run. |

Get out there on your metal bike in the rain! :D This reminds me of the very first time I ever hit 17mph on my bike. I had driven to a bike trail system to ride a long ride, which was three hours at the time. I failed to check the weather, and about an hour and a half into the ride, when I was as far out as I was planning to be, it started raining. I had no one to call, because everyone I knew locally around this trail system was on vacation. I had to ride home. So I did, and about halfway back it started lightning. Being dumb, I just pushed as hard as I could, and rode back to my car. in hindsight, maybe I should have stopped and waited the storm out. But I was so happy to see 17 mph! |

Member 3149 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN The chances of getting me into a dress are about the same as the chances the wildlife will actually start doing housework. Early morning double for me. 2750yds in the pool, mostly sprints, and then 72’ cycle with 4x10’ of Z3 intervals with the new FTP. It was a tough ride, but I managed to execute it as written. I feel accomplished after that one. Now…into the car for a two hour drive to visit my folks for a couple of days. That ought to stiffen me up some! |

Expert 4933 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Dead legs on the trainer this morning even though I slept well...tried to do 3 x 6' @ 100% (which if I'm being honest is probably more like 105% right now as my FTP is probably dragging a bit), first one OK, second ugh fail, third another fail - still a decent workout and then we did a bunch of dumbbells and planks. Felt fine on the strength and core work, legs just wouldn't listen. Planned day off tomorrow as part of my recovery week (and also a tiny taper for Saturday's 5K). |

399 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Got my lift in today at the gym, feeling great there. Speed work at the track tomorrow morning, then we take off for family vacation until next Friday. Should be able to get some running in here and there, but no cycling, and probably a deload week on strength training would do me some good. We will be up in Nebraska for the weekend and then Colorado Monday through Friday. I wasn't a big fan of Shrek, but I do like Puss in Boots quite a bit. Not Disney, but still a fun animated movie series, imo. |
