Regular 1781 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN @Robert, Not sure if your tri budget will allow for one, but an indoor trainer is a life saver for getting consistent rides in in any weather. Fully agree with staying inside in a lightning storm, but if you can get a basic/cheap trainer you can still get some time on the bike inside. Highly recommend. Enjoy the time away. @Gretchen. Nice work on getting through a tough ride. Always satisfying to get something ticked off you weren't 100% about. Did you go full Gretchen and bring your bike, trainer, wetsuit and running shoes with you for 2 days away? Or is this one a break? @Mike, The amount of time I have been on the bike (or not been on it more accurately) over the mast month I'm scared about how low my FTP might have dropped. So I feel your pain. Do you have a time goal for the 5k? Me, Currently half way through a rest week post HM. Feel like a total sloth. So far, 3 x '5 minute' body weight sessions, 1 x stretchy session, 1 x 30 min easy bike and 1 x 30 min easy run. More of the same sort of stuff to come for the rest of the week. |

1943 , Kronobergs lan | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN So, rest day today and tomorrow (just my 5 minutes strength) in preparation for Saturday, when we take on the mighty 2023 Nat. Times to beat S (a little more than 400m) : 9:35 T1: about 1 min B (21.5k) 40:44 T2: 38secs R: 25:45 Total 1:17:41 Honestly, I can’t see how I can beat that, especially the run, as I have been slower this year so far, the rest should be on par. Maybe a few seconds on the swim. So revised goal times: S: 9 T1: 1 B: 41 T2: 0:45 R: 26:50 (based on my 5k on Monday) Total 1:18:35 |

Expert 4933 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Good morning, all. As noted, planned day off today so will likely be a little rammy by this evening. Tomorrow will be a short bike, really short run, then a proper swim workout before my 5K on Saturday morning. @Andrew: 5K prediction? Other than pain? I'm guessing I'm capable of sub-25 and I'll probably know in the first 4-5 minutes. I plan on going out a little slow (like T pace - 8:30ish) then start hammering, which means I'll likely go out too fast and blow up around 4K. I'm still not really dialed in on pacing, but it's getting better; enjoy your recovery @Nathalie: I predict you giving 2023 Nat a run for it, but getting outstretched at the tape @Gretchen: enjoy your weekend off - ONLY bike and run LOL slacker @Nicole: hope India is going well - when are you coming back? @Robert: +1 on getting a cheap fluid trainer - my daughter picked up a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine for like $60 on FB Marketplace. Make sure your bike has the smoothest tires you can put on it (that'll help both racing and training indoors); stay dry the next couple of days as it looks like you're going to get soaked there |

399 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Speed work at the track this morning. 8x1:00 at 7:30 pace. Felt good and strong. Bulgarian split squats got re-introduced to my lifting routine yesterday, and now my glutes are unhappy. I've thought about getting a trainer, but not sure how well my mountain bike would do on it. I need to save up a bit and get a road bike and a trainer probably. Especially for the four months of winter that suck around here. We're already pressed for space around here, so I'm not sure bringing in a new bike AND a trainer would go over well yet. I do have a corner of my office I could re-arrange for it though, so who knows. Great work this week, everyone! |

1943 , Kronobergs lan | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN +1 on the trainer. I bought a second hand bike to have on it permanently. Very useful when the weather is crap in the Summer or when `i want to do a specific workout which can be difficult outside. |

399 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Day 1 of family vacation. Currently in North central Nebraska where my wife is from. @Gretchen, ignore the next two sentences. It's a lovely 65 and low humidity out currently. An amazing break from the Missouri heat. Improved :30 per mile on an easy 4, with a lower HR (avg 160). Loving this!! I will look into a trainer towards the end of the summer. We added a new patio to our house last month, and with a vacation and two race entry fees, the budget is a smidge tight at the moment. Edited by robertChiefsFan 2024-06-28 12:48 PM |

Expert 4933 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Hey, all. Picking up the pieces of our embarrassment of a "presidential" debate here in the U.S. last night. Got any room for us in New Zealand or Sweden?? I'm only half kidding. Anyway, life goes on with a race primer workout - 22 min warm up on the bike hitting all of the zones, 1 mile on the treadmill building the 2nd half to race pace, then a short swim to remember how. LOL Daughter might run with me - she just got back from Greece and I think the jet lag is going to hit her tonight so we'll see. Good luck racing this weekend, Nat!

1943 , Kronobergs lan | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Yeah, I feel for you, having to choose between a confused old man and a delusional, hardly younger one. (Deliberately leaving politics aside) I have nothing against old people, and I fully intend to keep racing at that age (mainly because I will win my age group all the time, all the other ones being dead) but why on earth would you want to run for president (again) at that age? 399 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Happy Saturday everyone! Good luck to those racing this weekend!! Easy Z2 6 mile run here. It was 55 when I took off, and was able to keep my HR in the mid to upper 150s. I'm definitely excited for that level of improvement compared to way back when I started in January! |

Member 3149 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Back at home after a long few days at my folks house. My aunt and cousin were visiting with three of my aunt’s grandsons (16-18yo). The boys had fun playing in the woods and fields. The adults sat at the kitchen table and talked…for two days straight. I am not used to sitting still that long. Had to though, as my aunt gets winded going to the bathroom (not kidding). A very good motivator to keep active in reality. I hit my planned workouts. Thursday I did a 2:15 run around the country roads. Friday I hit the bike trail on my drive home for a 5:30/60’ brick. All went well, even with trying a little nutrition shakeup on the brick. This morning I got up early and did a 2 hour Z1 ride. I took the chance to practice riding on the left and taking left turns at speed around the local airport, because at worlds in Australia, we’ll be riding on the left and the course has a lot of turns. In a bit I’m headed to the gym for a swim and strength session to finish out this week. |

399 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Welp, this is no good. Woke up today with a sore/stiff Achilles tendon on my right foot. I noticed something after my long run a week ago, but ignored it and pushed through. It was a little tight yesterday afternoon following my 6 mile run, so I stretched really well. Today it's not exactly sore, but more "noticeable". Seems like a great week to de-load and rest it a bit. Hopefully it's just from a bit of overtraining, and not something that's going to become a nuisance. |

Regular 1781 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN @Mike. 26:27 is a bloody good effort! Nice work. The return to running is going strong @Nat. Damn that 2023 Nat. She was a machine though. @Gretchen. Only half a Gretchen? Well even a machine needs a light weekend from time to time. Nice work getting it all in though. I can honestly say I've never taken a bike to train on with me on a trip away. Running yes, always net never a bike. Awesome commitment. Great job on your 5 x stretching streak. @Robert. I get the limited fun tokens problem. It's not a cheap pastime we've taken up. FWIW though, you will be able to connect your mountain bike to a 'wheel on' trainer. https://au.wahoofitness.com/devices/indoor-cycling/bike-trainers/kic... (not necessarily this brand, but one like this) So, although yes,a road bike should 100% be on your shopping list. You wouldn't need one before getting a trainer. Like Mike said, you can pick up a 2nd hand one for relatively cheap. Something to consider for the future Hoping that your Achilles is just a minor thing and feeling right tomorrow. Good job being responsible and resting instead of doing what I would do and training through it, until it became so bad I could barely walk @ME, Last week I picked up a bit of a head cold, so seeing as it was a rest block between training plans I shut it down, and had 4 consecutive days off for my longest break of the year. I'm improved, but not 100%, so still 50/50 deciding weather I start my next block tonight as planned, or have another really light week and turn the 18 week plan into a 17 week one. That would be the smart decision. Did make a bit of progress on the cabin project though. The 'foundation' concrete blocks have been laid out and poured. So ready to receive the cabin. We should get a date sorted for that this week, hopefully only a few weeks wait. For the week: Swim: 0, bike: x1 30min, run: x1 30min. Stretch: x1, Bodyweight: x3 Edited by bulfrog 2024-06-30 5:58 PM |
