Mcluvin22 - 2010-05-04 8:30 AM So I have good news and a question. The good news is that I ran the Long Branch Half Marathon this weekend and posted a new PR of 1:37 and that was after an 85 mile ride and nearly 2 mile swim on Saturday.

But my question is why is it that after every running race I get such awful stomach cramps? I literally feel fine the whole time running but as soon as I cross that finish line it takes all of about 5 minutes and then I get cramps. I am hoping someone can give me some insight on why this happens or how to avoid this. I drank water at every aid station so I don't think it could have been dehydration.

This won't necessarily answer your question, but I thought it was a decent source of info: http://www.trifuel.com/training/health-nutrition/tri-gut-check-avoiding-race-day-gi-distress

I'm having a tough time trying to research studies and post on BT at work!! Anywhoo, my take  on cramping that  you mentioned (but some folks with more medical knowledge then I do *nudge, nudge* could probably answer better) was that when splanchnic circulation (blood in your gut) is diverted to your working muscles (legs, arms) for racing and then redirected back to your gut it can cause cramping and nausea.  Your muscles are like a blood pump and if you don't cool down properly then it gums up the pumping system....

So, one question I'd ask is "What's your cool down like after a race?".  If you go from HIGH intensity to sitting down with the family in the shade then your boday may react with WTF?

Last year I forced myself to cool down because I got sick of getting sick (throwing up) after long runs (because I'd get home and go right to the shower to cool off) so I started taking the dog for a walk right after my long runs (over 7 miles) and it helped.

Just a thought.

lesleyann - 2010-05-04 8:06 AM ok, I need some opinions. I am going up to lake placid the first weekend in june for a training camp. the next weekend is eagleman which i am registered for but still don't have a place to stay. my question is, what is more beneficial for me to do: 1) race eagleman or 2) go up to lake placid again that weekend for the free endurance nation camp. thanks

I'd do Eagleman I think.   As gopennstate said you'll have got to know the LP course the weekend before.
I'd use Eagleman as an intense training day to test out things like nutrition in an adrenaline spiked enviroment.

Who is following the BT plan for IMLP????

I need guidance from someone following it!  I started early and now I'm on my last week of training before "tapering"...so I need to figure out if I need to just cycle through the last couple of weeks again as is or add to what I've already done the second time around (and then wait until July to taper).

TIA!

I'm not but my thoughts would be (and this is without looking at the plan):-

Depends on which plan you are doing - looks like there is beginner, int and advanced
I'd figure out on your plan where you should be right now (with an end date of Placid), also looking at the next level up plan and slightly adapt your one using a few ideas from next level up one to dovetail in til taper begins.
I also think it would be ok just to repeat training blocks if they are solely endurance based but that could get a bit boring and it is nice to think you are progressing/ getting stronger by doing something new.

What's more beneficial will depend on what you feel you need to work on. If you want to test our race day prep and strategy and just have the experience of going through transitions and so forth, Eagleman would be great. If you feel you have that nailed then a long training weekend is always more beneficial from a fitness standpoint. I don't think you need to do it at LP unless you live nearby and it's convenient, as others have said, you'll have checked out the course and likely feel pretty comfortable with it.

I say do Eagleman.

LP the swim is flat, the bike is hilly and the run has some hillys other than that you can drive the bike course and bike the run course when you come up to race.  You have plenty of hilly in Central PA to train on untill then.

Have you checked Salisbury MD for rooms.

I need to eat after races.  I get hunger pain after races, but thats me.  Drinking water is great but your body need food.  I also eat like 1500 cals a few hours before BIG races, but then again thats me.

Try hotels in Easton.  It's only a 15 minute, 20 minute tops ride.  In stayed in Easton when I did Eagleman last year.

I was wondering if IMLP 2010 was going to have a BT shirt made.  When I did IMFL one of the BT'ers designed a shirt so we could recognize each other and it ended up being pretty cool.  I actually wore mine yesterday which is why I'm bringing this up.

Thank you everyone for your insight on the GI issues I have been having. WittyGirl, that article makes sense b/c on race day I go from performing at a high rate to stopping and standing around for others to finish. I plan I trying to get a proper cool down and see if that helps. Thanks

The front had the BT logo in the middle.  The back had a diamond shape outline with all the disciplines and distances inside it.  IMFL 2008 over it.

Since it is my job to post pictures in the IMLP thread, I found a bootleg copy of the fishing pictures - there are some IMLPers in these shots:

I'm in for EM. Found a hotel last night.

We got BT shirts for Florida this year too and it was really nice because we could identify each other at the OWS's and stuff. They were bright orange tech shirts that were really nice. We even had ones for family members.
