Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official ThreadMcluvin22 - 2010-05-04 8:30 AM So I have good news and a question. The good news is that I ran the Long Branch Half Marathon this weekend and posted a new PR of 1:37 and that was after an 85 mile ride and nearly 2 mile swim on Saturday. But my question is why is it that after every running race I get such awful stomach cramps? I literally feel fine the whole time running but as soon as I cross that finish line it takes all of about 5 minutes and then I get cramps. I am hoping someone can give me some insight on why this happens or how to avoid this. I drank water at every aid station so I don't think it could have been dehydration. This won't necessarily answer your question, but I thought it was a decent source of info: http://www.trifuel.com/training/health-nutrition/tri-gut-check-avoiding-race-day-gi-distressI'm having a tough time trying to research studies and post on BT at work!! Anywhoo, my take on cramping that you mentioned (but some folks with more medical knowledge then I do *nudge, nudge* could probably answer better ) was that when splanchnic circulation (blood in your gut ) is diverted to your working muscles (legs, arms ) for racing and then redirected back to your gut it can cause cramping and nausea. Your muscles are like a blood pump and if you don't cool down properly then it gums up the pumping system.... So, one question I'd ask is "What's your cool down like after a race?". If you go from HIGH intensity to sitting down with the family in the shade then your boday may react with WTF? Last year I forced myself to cool down because I got sick of getting sick (throwing up ) after long runs (because I'd get home and go right to the shower to cool off ) so I started taking the dog for a walk right after my long runs (over 7 miles ) and it helped. Just a thought. |
