Can you put in the add that two church going christians are looking for a roomate?  You are discribing yourself, but eluding to the fact that you would want similar?

No - according to the Fair Housing laws, that's still a violation, to "identify yourself" as one of the discriminate categories. I think it's one thing to say "young professionals", which could be twisted to be "discrimination" against families or people without jobs, etc, but the religion button is a hot one...so that would get flagged. I don't even think we can say "active in our church".

We want other Christians because of certain shared values that are important to us - ie, no boys spending the night. For various theological reasons, we don't want these things violated! I understand why Fair Housing laws exist, but it's still annoying, since this is a free country. But apparently, housing posts are considered "commercial speech" and not personal, so freedom-of-speech does not apply.

how bout you type it like one of those poems where the first letter of each line spells out "christians only"

like

Chrissy is looking to

Have a new

Roommate that

In Norther Virginia, etc etc

So you can say single white female or divorced female or other discriptors, but not religion?

Maybe not 'white', I quess...

I would think this law would apply to the people doing the leasing (the home or apt), not someone who is looking for a roomate.  So the people who own the house, not you.  But I'm no lawyer.

I don't think Craigslist will let you post (or it'll get pulled) if it has anything that could be construed as discrimination in the post.

write up what you want and email to everyone you know and ask them to pass it on to everyone they know/anyone that might be interested.  then its private and you can say what you want.

I'm not sure that being a Christian make a difference in that, to be honest.  It's a personal choice.  I would wager that just as many Christians would violate this as non-Christians would adhere to those standards, if that makes sense.  You would be better forgetting the Christian part, and during the interviews, state the rules and see if they can live with them.  Chances are, that 9 out of 10 people, if not more, would say they are 'chirstian' anyway, so it really doesn't rule anyone out - I'm guessing.

Of course, if you really DON'T want a Hindu or Athiest in the house, that's another thing all together.  I have several Indian/Hindu friends that are as straight laced as can be, and would never violate rules like that.

Artemis - 2009-02-09 1:47 PM I think you're stuck interviewing people.  Personally, I think you're overreacting a little.  I might not be active in a church, but I'd be willing to go along with some of the things you're concerned about if I liked the apartment and the other people.

I don't know that many folks would like the "no boyfriends spending the night" rule. That's probably the biggest one that we need to follow. I can otherwise find, courteous, respectful roommates who don't go to church, but aren't crazy partiers or anything. It's really the "no sex with boys in the house" thing that puts a damper in the situation.

That is somewhat true, except we're not looking for "Christmas/Easter" "Christians". Take that as you will. My one roommate is also very conservative, and would NOT tolerate someone who had their boyfriend spending the night. And though I tend to have a little bit more lax an opinion on some of those issues, it's still not in my best interest as a witness of Christ, to turn a blind eye to those sorts of things. But let's not turn this into a theological debate. Plus, wouldn't you think that someone who maybe would NOT want to live with devout Christians should be aware that we are??? Would save everyone the trouble.

And I think the Atheist might be a little turned off by the ginormous decorative wrought-iron cross we have hanging on the dining area wall

Okay, totally different subject.

People KEEP calling me Christina. It's NOT NOT NOT my name. My given name is Christine, or they can call me Chrissy. So how do I go about telling them NOT to call me Christina????

It annoys me to no end, because I believe it is incredibly disrespectful not to make the effort to learn the correct form of someone's name. It means that you do not respect them as a person, or a coworker, etc. And if you do not respect someone, then you do not command their respect.

I'd also like to clarify that while it's happening here, it's not exclusive to this office. This happens all the time. Also constant is the misspelling of "Chrissy" even when it is written everywhere, and I sign every email "Chrissy". At my old office, for the LIFE of a few people, including my boss, they could NOT spell my name right, even when I flat out told them it was incorrect. I'm sorry if this sounds whiney, but it's just plain rude. I take great care to remember people's names and learn to spell them correctly. It's rude not to, imho.
