So how is everyone's training week looking?  Any big weeks planned?

I've got a half-marathon this weekend. It's called the WINTERMAN (very intimidating, lol)! Although I don't really have a time goal, only to negative split. The first 8-9k will be warm up, then I'll bring out a little speed and kick it a bit.

Other than that, in a little bit of non-tri related news -- I was just accepted to study a year in Australia! I leave in June/July! I've had a big grin plastered on my face for the last few hours. It's a very competitive field, and they usually only hand over 1 semester per student as a study exchange to U of Melbourne but I obviously knocked their socks off and they gave me a whole year!! Woo hoo!! I'm studying Wildlife Biology so to study Australian flora and fauna for a year is a bit orgasmic, to say the least.

JeffIrvin - 2010-02-16 5:32 PM That is very cool to win the relay --- did you get any cool schwag with the victory?

We got $100 for winning.  That almost covers the race entry, so I'm really happy about it.

Congrats Krystyna, that's awesome! I spent a month in Perth and I LOVED it. I home Melbourne is great. Really humid there, right?

That is pretty amazing Krystyna!  Congrats!  Sounds like you worked hard and earned the right to go to Australia so good for you.  And what better place to study Wildlife Biology?  You can probably get in some really cool races there as well!

What an opportunity! I lived in  the Colorado rockies and often wished I pursued that
area of study.

According to the newspaper I live in an east Texas county that ranked 185th out of 221 in health, maybe this is why most people look at me funny when I mention running, biking or swimming.  I am not shocked about the result because I work in healthcare and routinely see 350lb + people and have taken care of quite a few that have had heart attacks in their 40's
Sorry just had to say that, now I am off to the doctor to get my cholesterol checked then exercise again this afternoon.  Have a great day everyone.

Hey my county ranked dead last in Utah. Lack of good health care, no easy way to walk to the stores, smoking and obesity. Yet we have some of the best premeir biking, hiking and overall outdoors opportunities right here. Go figure

Lance, did it say where Montgomery County was ranked?  Lots of unhealthy people here, that is for sure.

I believe he goes by coachTroy Jacobs , out of Arizona. He has put out some very good training dvds.
And thanks for the encouragment. Sounds like you too took off some weight. I initially took off 48#. I,ve put some back on though as food does taste good. Honestly man I think what your doing is great. I don't know you, wish I did strides. I am looking at an indoor tri in march. This might be a good start for me. Has anyone heard of total immerssion swimming?

You hear about Total Immersion alot in the triathlon forums, so it must be popular. I've never looked into the details of it, though.

I read the total imersion book and watched their dvd's they helped me tremendously when I first started swimming.  I don't swim all that fast still but I can swim for quite a while using these techniques and not get as tired as trying to force it through the water,

so what is the primary concept of this swimming technique? It appears to be a very smooth and effortless
swim. And how did it help you out the most?

It helps by teaching efficiency in the water and yes increased efficiency does translate into a much decreased effort for the swim. You won't be fast to start with but repetition builds muscle memory and speed happens slowly. When I started last year around this time 25 meters about killed me, I just started swimming again this month after about a 2 month layoff and swam 2000 meters in 45 minutes the other day. Swimming is much more technique then strength. Last year there were some total immersion videos on this site

Tim, Lance hit the nail on the head about Total Immersion swimming.  Here is the link to the website: http://www.totalimmersion.net/

When I first signed up for a Triathlon I could not swim 25 meters.  It was bad - I actually told the lifeguard at my pool not to worry that I was not drowning.  The freestyle swim technique was completely foreign to me.  A friend of mine recommended Total Immersion.  I picked up the book and read it cover-to-cover.  Within a couple of weeks I was easily swimming over a mile at a time in the pool.  Now the beauty of TI is that it is easy to learn and you can swim a long time with minimal effort.  The ugly part is that you will not be fast, at all.  At the peak of my TI training I could have swam the 2.4 miles of an IM - no problem.  But it would have been a problem to make it in the 2:20 cutoff time!

Overall, TI is a great program if you are a beginner swimmer and want to develop a feel for the water and develop conditioning.  Highly recommended.  But if you are looking to become competitive in your age group of be a FOP swimmer than you may want to start with TI, but then consider taking lessons.  Just my .02.

Hey Group!

Wanted to get some opinions on a race selection and see what you guys think?

My main race this year is going to be the IronStar HIM in Conroe, TX on November 7th.

A good friend of mine has recently taken up runnng and is planning on doing the Baltimore Marathon on October 16th.  He has invited my wife and I to come up and run the race with him.  Now we used to live in Baltimore and my wife is extremely excited about the idea (he FB'd her before me - well played) because she would get to visit a bunch of old friends and run another marathon.

My concern is that the marathon is 3 weeks before my HIM.  So, do you guys think this is enough time to recover?

My thoughts are (and let me know if this is stupid) that I run the race with my buddy and be his pacer.  He will probably be around 10 mins/mile.  At this slower pace I could easily recover in a couple of days and pick right up with my HIM training and the marathon would just be a very long training run.

So, what do you guys think?  Does this sound stupid, and should I just skip the race and be the cheering section?

My real concern is that the race will begin and I won't be able to control my competitive impulse to race and will be less than recovered for the HIM -- I am a meathead afterall!

Hey Jeff is that a Purdue hat you have on? So for me making the distance in the swim is important. Once settled in I'll transition to be faster. What book or dvd did you use for the total immersion swimming?

Okay group, do you adjust your own bikes?  When switching from my large front chain ring to the small,I often have to click my shifter two to three times to have it move to the small ring.

Is there a half-marathon going on at the same event? Personally, it would knock me out. Everyone I know has had this sequence of events happen to them: run a marathon, get a cold. But if you're totally comfortable with the distance and WILL PACE IT NOT RUN IT (lol) then I say woohoo, go for it!!
