Overcast
Total Time = 2h 02m 44s
Overall Rank = 146/253
Age Group = Women 20-24
Age Group Rank = 3/9
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast at 7am. Walk to the race site with a friend. Go to washroom in the Canadian War Museum, head to start site. Start watch.
Event warmup:

Chat with my friend. I wasn't racing this, I was here to combat the winter blues and to have fun!!
Run
  • 2h 02m 44s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 05m 49s  min/km
Comments:

3/9 in my age group.
47/113 in my gender.

In a way, this run was flawless because absolutely nothing went wrong. I started off strong, nothing hurt, nothing began to hurt. I just kept plodding along, slowly getting more and more tired. The laps took just a bit longer to complete each time, but I was pretty consistent. It was cold out there, though. Oof, the wind and blowing snow were scratching my face up some.

The run course was much, much longer than 21.1 km. I did 22.69 km in 2:02:38, i.e. a 5:24/km pace. Decent. The first 21.1 km were run in 1:54:09. New PR!

Nutrition: Gu blocks (3 of them), strawberry-cranberry flavor with caffeine (!!) did the trick. Took them with water. I should have taken maybe 1-2 more blocks.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much, maybe be more mentally prepared to race. I just went out and ran the thing. I have the hardest time getting mentally psyched to RACE, not just run. Also, get rid of Canadian winters, because they suck.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around, drink free smoothies, eat bananas, stretch, wait for my friend to finish, get a free 45 minute massage (the best thing that has ever happened to me, it was GODLY).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The snow, cold, wind. I was a teensy bit overtrained these last few weeks and, although the day off on friday helped, I still felt a bit tired.

Event comments:

It is a well organized race but they said we'd get long sleeve technical shirts and we didn't!! That was last year, and they hadn't updated their site. Instead, we got stupid cotton tshirts. WHAT THE HECK AM I GOING TO DO WITH A COTTON TSHIRT!?! But yeah, pretty good race. Plus, student discounts on entry fees, booyah.

Running

Performance: Good
Lap 1: 28:49 Lap 2: 28:55 Lap 3: 29:17 Lap 4: 29:24 (Consistency!!)
Course: 4 laps of a "5km" loop along the water, and an additional "1.1km" loop. I hate and love laps at the same time. I love them because they divide the course up and I know what's coming up ahead. I hate them because, god dammit, the tedium of it all!!

It is a PR but that's comparing to last year, when I still had knee pain from my surgery. We'll see how things improve over the course of this season!!!

Haha, Etienne, like you we had a winter whiteout. Those photos do NOT indicate that spring is coming anytime soon, eh?
