Solid food is just a pain in the butt to pack.  However, if I'm on a loop course with a pit area, I like bananas, almonds, cashews, potatoes, english muffins, dried fruit, plain sliced turkey, chicken, or ham, CLIF builder bars....  I'm usually OK with anything plain-jane and stay away from fruits with skins, unless you want to be making pit stops.

So basically if you're doing a loop, you just set up a buffet at one point?

No, no, I might have given the wrong idea here.  Mostly endurance rides are done on a loop.  I will ride for hours (several loops) on prepared liquid drinks (protein-carb).  When I come off course, I will snack on one or two of those solid foods.  I usually shoot for only 300 calories/hours and never more than 400 calories/hour.  While I'm sure I could do the entire race on liquid, solid food definately helps with taste and fulfillment.

I know...I was just teasing...Smile

Once you got into the turkey, chicken and ham though...made me think of a buffet line.  The only thing missing was dessert.

Alright, I thought you were kidding, but just wanted to be clear.  I would hate for somebody to actually make themselves a Vegas buffet during the race and then blame me when it didn't work out right Wink  We can't all have GI systems like Bill's!

Somehow I get a mental picture of Bill ordering a pizza on his bike...then asking the delivery guy to give it to him while riding...and the poor delivery guy on his moped can't catch him.

Scary, isn't it?  I keep thinking of him pulling into the gas stations and picking his hot dog off of those rollers!

No hot dogs guys - just pizza

Hi Bill... you are not usually around on a Friday evening, are you?

So, speaking of Draper, you know those mountains that are right there (the Wasatch front, I think?! sorry if that's wrong)? Those are the first mountains I ever saw in my life. (Some life history here...)I grew up in OH, joined the Army and was sent to OK as my first duty station where I met my hubby. When we went to UT and I saw those mts, I was in total awe (and still am to this day when I see them or the Rockies!) I remember staring at them and my hubby asking me what I was staring at. I told him the mts and that "they don't look real. They look like something out of a movie, like they were superimposed or something." To this day, he laughs his arse off when that is brought up!

I was blessed and grew up in Colorado (denver) so I had the same wake up call everyday.  I didn't appreciate it until I left and came back home and saw Mt. Evans from about 1-2 hours outside of Denver - Awesome.

Now I can't get enough of them - heading there mid-April with the family - I cannot wait.  The kids have not been there for about 3-4 years so it will be great to take them up into the mountains and let them experience what I grew up with!

It is an amazing place ~ in every aspect!! I lived in CO for about 4 years and absolutely LOVED it. Ever since we left I've been saying we will return permanently but living by family (in WA) has taken precedence since having Sammi.

Where did you live? Where is your family (if you don't mind me asking)? I was in Centennial then moved to the Springs for about 3 months before moving here.

We live in WA but want to move to CO (about an hour east of Denver) to be near family.  But we have family here in WA too.  I have only visited CO but I really liked it!

Where do you live (I see somewhere SW)? I lived in Lakewood (Tacoma area) back in the early 90s but we will be moving to VERY north WA (Bellingham area) in about a month! Oh how I could go on and on about how GREAT CO is...

I did not get that swim done.  We had a bit of a crisis at the in-law's ranch.  The in-laws are out of town so sis-in-law is in charge of taking care of the goats who are beginning to have their babies.  This morning, she found one dead baby and one baby in serious jeopardy because it's mama rejected it.  She took the baby home and got milk from the farm store and fed her all day.  "Alice" is doing good now.  This evening, another mama rejected her newborn twins.  We did everything we could to get her to take them, but it wasn't happening.  Sis-in-law now has three furry kids to take care of tonight!  I feel bad that we didn't take the twins.  My husband is running a 15K race tomorrow so we will be gone.  I think we will be on goat duty tomorrow night.  There is only one more pregnant goat left.  Hopefully she accepts her babies!

We live in Longview which is about an hour north of Portland or a couple of hours south of Tacoma.  The part of CO that our family lives in is high plains desert so it is not the typical  mountain scenery that people think of.  But it is just over an hour from Denver, so it is not too far from the mountains for a weekend trip!

That is a lot of bottle babies!  Is it typical that the goats reject so many of the babies?

pdbman - 2010-03-26 1:27 PM So I've been looking around at some of the old threads hanging around and have a question.  What is Nibbs?  I looked through history and the first reference I could find is Nibbs XIII but couldn't find anything that says what it is.

Nibbs was a challenge team that turned into a challenge thread TAN.

I am a Ghoulie but we still have monthly challenges amongst ourselves but Nibbs is where challenge people TAN without going to TAN.

Does that help?

Alrighty, call me slow but what the heck is TAN? This is about the 10th time i've seen this and I cannot figure out what it means!

I believe it stands for Thread About Nothing.

Go into Cup of Joe, and look for the most recent TAN thread.  It boggles my mind.

Aaaaah...thanks!

LOL Yeah, most people think of CO of being nothing but snow and mountains. That's what I love about the Denver area...it snows but because of all the sun, the snow melts faster than it can hit the ground (with the exception of that yearly blizzard!)

tri808 - 2010-03-26 5:52 PM Have any of you seen the 2009 IM highlights that was shown on NBC?

Do you remember the lady who was hunched over with back spasms and couldn't finish?

She's actually a Hawaii resident, and a local TV show was documenting her training from when she first qualified at the Hawaii 70.3 in June of 09.  Last night, they showed the episode of her actually racing Kona.  The problem she actually had was her sciatic (spell?) nerve.  She knew about the problem a couple weeks in advance, but could not pass up on the opportunity to race Kona.  She could swim and bike fine, but she couldn't run at all 2 weeks leading up to the race.  I think being hunched over on the bike for 7 hours caused that nerve to lock up eventually on her run.

So from the NBC highlights, you could see how she was hunched over...but the highlights from this local programming covering her was so much more dramatic.  It literally showed her crawling as she could barely stand up only half a mile from the finish (with plenty of time to get there before midnight).  You could hear the cow bells and Mike Rielly in the background and she would simply not give up.  She ended up getting blisters on her hands because she spent so much time hunched over and using them to keep her balance...basically moving about 25 feet a minute.  I couldn't help but tear up...no matter how many times she fell, and no matter how bad she looked, she would not quit.  Her boyfriend made a comment that was so true.  That he so proud of her for her fight...he said he would have been just as proud if she had finished in 10 hours (I believe her goal was in the 15-16 hour range) as he was of her even though she didn't make the cutoff.

For a AGer to show that kind of guts was simply amazing.  On a side note, her original goal (before qualifying for Kona in June) was to do IM Western Australia in December.  Someone told me she ended up completing that race withing the time frame.  Not sure if she had similar trouble with her back, but still amazing.

Super cool story.

I've always lived around mountains, Alaska and Utah, so I'm used to them and I laugh when I hear stories like this.  I remember we took a customer from New York on a mountain bike ride.  She had to stop and take a picture of an elevation sign that said 4800 ft above sea level. She said that is the height of the tallest mountain in NY. We were still on the foothills. We didn't make it too far up the trail.  She couldn't handle the altitude.

Man, I almost died when I tried to run that first time in UT. Then my hubby took me to Timpanogas (?) cave and I had to stop for a break on the way up. The altitude is no joke when you're not used to it!

Oooh, where in AK did you live? I was in Fairbanks for about 3 years. (yes, i've lived all over the place!)

Anchorage.

I was a little slow getting out for my ride and by the time I got back I had to get cleaned up to go out to dinner with some friends so I missed my run and will have to make it up Tuesday. Went to a Benihana type place. Lots of fun and very tasty. Third time this week for Japanese/Chinese food.

I saw her when I watched some of the highlights the other night.  It was pretty amazing...my family kept asking why in the world people would do that...It took a bit of explaining.

Sorry I haven't been around much.  I found another outlet for my time spent online...I've ventured into the world of E harmony and Match.com.  Just doing a trial run at the moment, but I have had some great talks with a few very awesome guys.  I was up 'til 2am last night with 3+ hours online conversation.

Don't worry though...I will still reach my goals for the month.  I am determined.  I will have to make sure to get a run in tonight.

Hopefully she accepts her babies!

wow...raising babies of any sort is a huge challenge...my mom took on a litter of newborn kittens that were rejected.  I think that there were four kittens...one died early on, but the rest made it.  They were soooooo tiny.

Just got back from my ride...47 miles.  I pushed pretty good the first 40 or so...but nearly bonked the last 5ish.  I was starving...first time that's every happened.  I had 2 bottles of gatorade and two GUs, but I suppose I should have ate a little more last night.  I just had a salad for dinner...not enough carbs.

I checked my computer, and it showed my max speed at 41.7 mph...I think that's the first time I broke 40.  Of course it was downhill, but still...

I don't know what I was thinking.  I just got back from my run and it put me over 50 miles but my goal is 55 so I have just under 2 left so it shouldn't be a problem. I have about 10 more miles on my schedule through Wednesday.  I should hit at least 100% on all goals this month.
