Has anyone made a table/chart thingy with links to all of our logs? Anybody here know how to make one?

It's about time you joined the party Amy!

We do not have one of the little chart thingy's. That would be nice though.

I'll try to get to it this weekend, but I can't make any promises, I'm still working on music for you.

Morning Ghoulies! Welcome Amy!
It is absolutely gorgeous outside today. We have had so much rain and windy, nasty weekends. Got a short run in and the sun was just peeking over the trees when I finished.  I will be busy helping Mom move most of the day, but you can bet I squeeze a bike ride in.

So what's on tap for everyone today?

I'm planning on a 30ish mile bike ride, then taking my son to the movies.

I'm also planning to take a nap at some point in time, too.

Rest day here, well from exercising.  My parents are visiting on their way back from their winter place.  So I need to straigthen the house a bit and head to the grocery store to get stuff for a cook out this evening.

Heart Rate Monitor question.

I havn't been training to stay in particular zones but I've been wearing one and recording data just for fun.  Does anyone use a HRM during races?  If so, is there a zone you try to stay in?  If not do you go by RPE or just go all out?

Ditto on the bike ride, but I fear that there are no movies or naps in my future today. I've got cleaning to do. Yay.

Hey Mike. I do not use a HRM, but I know that there are several very lengthy discussion threads over in the Tri Talk forum regarding Zones vs. RPE and other such data. I haven't checked them out, mainly because all that stuff is Greek to me.

You definitely don't need to go all out every time though. Tris are endurance sports, so while figuring out your lactic threshold may be a valuable tool, what's more important is that you spend a lot of time marinating in the cardio region. The best advice I got when I started running was that long runs should feel fairly relaxed, where your heart rate is low enough where you can have a comfortable conversation with your running partner (or random street signs), but fast enough where you can't really sing. Since you do have a HRM you'll be able to find those sweet spots and fine tune to ranges that are right for you.

Hi all,

I joined a few days ago but never introduced myself.

Name: Tania

Story: I've been a casual runner off and on for a few years, entering a few 5K races when I could - nothing formal.  I was mostly running to keep weight off.  I turned 40 earlier this year and thought it would be cool to do my first tri this year.

Family Status: I'm married, no kids, with 3 dogs, 5 birds and a cat.  I work from home which is pretty freakin terrific I must say.

Current training:  I was following the BT 3X SPrint 20 week program pretty faithfully until a few weeks ago when I sprained my ankle.  I'm just trying to get back into the swing now and start running and biking outside instead of in the gym.  I also do krav maga 3-4 times a week - I'm level 2 and getting ready to test up to level 3.

This year's races: My first tri is the Got the Nerve tri on May 22.  I'm also signed up for the She Rox tri in Philly on Aug 1

Weight Loss: I'm not really too concerned - I'd like to lose 10 pounds, but I don't stress about it.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all!

I ran 10.5 this morning, followed by massive consumption of food at the local diner.  I definitely feel a nap coming on.  Tonight I'm taking a friend for her first *no kids* night out in some time.  She has 5 year old twin boys and a 3 year old daughter.  And is in the throes of a divorce.  I think it may be martini night.  Tomorrow should be an early morning swim followed by a bike.  We'll see how many adult beverages I have and how I feel in the morning.

Hope everyone is having a terrific weekend.

Hi Tania, welcome to the group.  I did SheRox in Philly a couple years ago.  It's a fun race and really well organized. The post race party was especially nice. They even raffled off a sweet Orbea bike (which I unfortunately didn't win.)  Last year I wasn't there but heard it was a du, as a result of rain, flooding and debris in the Schuylkill.

Gotta ask, what is krav maga??

Krav maga (affectionally known as krav) is a hand to hand combat/self defense system developed by the Israeli Defense Forces.  It's about doing as much damage when attacked to survive the attack and get away.  It's the best workout I have ever had and I am more muscular now then I have ever been in my life.  You can see a lot of the techniques by searching for 'krav maga' on youtube.

Hey Tania, welcome to the Village. I'd love to hear what you think of Krav Maga as a cross training activity. I have a little martial arts experience and always wanted to try krav or get back into jiu jitsu. My issue right now is finding the time to do it.

Welcome Tania. I assume the sprain is healing okay? I have heard of Krav maga before but never knew its name. That is the problem with living in a small town. No where to take such classes.

I finished my HM in 2:35 today. The time is about what I had figured I would do. I am slow and steady usually. I had drama in the morning that changed everything but I did the best I could. I had to substitute going to the actual race with running my own personal HM. The car died and there I stood with the DH long gone to a business breakfast. By the time he got back, If I had driven, I would have missed the start time.

I have AWESOME news my Ghoulie friends. I can RUN again! Thank God ! I went to a chirpractor yesterday who diagnosed my problem as chondromalacia patellae. He did A.R.T. Active Release technique, ultrasound therapy, gave me an adjustment, and applied kinesio tape. Yesterday I ran 1 mile and today I ran about 1.75! that is more than i have been able to run in 3 weeks. I am ecstatic! have a great weekend everyone! Nichi

Robin, congrats on the time and the htfu stress points for the morning drama.  KUDO's to you for doing your own race.  Your time is even more impressive in that you didn't have the crowds or water/aid support to boost you along the way.  I hope you wore that race number anyway with pride.

Sending a *finishers medal* your way!!!!  Next year, just invite us all down to your place and we'll run Robin's HTFU Half together.  Neal and Tom and all the other rabbits can have drinks and snacks ready for us turtles at the finish.

Actually, it's probably not the best because it is a full body work out and is really exhausting.  I get done and don't want to do anything else.  Plus that's how I sprained my ankle (which is healing fine, thanks for asking).  I also currently have a black eye from catching a wild elbow last week.  But, I'm hooked and I won't give it up.  I have a T-shirt that pretty much sums it up - Krav Maga is religion.

I'm so inspired by those of you who can run 10 miles and/or bike 50 miles!  That's so great!  I am excited that I can swim a non-stop 1000 meters (I couldn't swim 100 without stopping when I started), bike 16 miles in an hour and run a 5K (not yet all on the same day but I'm working on it).

Have a great rest of the weekend!

well, now that I am running again,Ihave a question. How many miles could I safely run in a week? go ahead and look at my logs. I haven't done much in the last 3 weeks. Before that, I was up to 12 miles for my long run and 30 plus miles per week. I do not want to start all over again.but, i also do not want to reinjure myself by doing too much.My plan is to do a 4.6 mile run on monday with some friends. i ran with them today and we did an easy 12 minute mile pace. The only thing i will do differently is to do a run/walk ratio of 1:1. i was doing 2:1 before my injury. I see my chiro on wed. Thanks for your help! it is greatly appreciated.Nichi

Hey, great job!  Sorry about the drama.  Just remembering everything I need is stressful enough.
