deehtz - 2010-12-06 10:15 AM My weekend started off as planned but then took an interesting turn.  Saturday afternoon was a Christmas party (morning spent cooking).  I had planned a 9 mile run Sunday afternoon in the absolutely beautiful weather.  But DH had a different outing planned for us.  We went and selected our Christmas present... another puppy to go along with our little one.  But this one will not stay little.... german shepherd.

Spent the afternoon up at the breeders having fun with the pups and the parents... so no run.  Today is pouring buckets and we have to go back up to the breeders after work to finalize papers.  We will get the puppy this weekend.  DH has talked about getting a GSD for a long time, so I guess now is the time!

However, if all goes well, I will get my 9 miles in on Tuesday, rain or no rain!

YEA!!!!! You will LOVE your GSD!!!!! They are SMART, though. Get some good training in from the start. It is worth the work later.

I can't wait to see pics.

I have to admit, I am both excited and a little apprehensive.  Mainly because of the size.  It will be in the house with us when we are home, so that means dealing with the hair and the big dog in the small rooms.  However, our labs did okay so I am sure the puppy will eventually learn to be mellow in the house also.  We will just have to be consistent!

We took our little dog with us to the breeders.  After a bit we brought her into the big area where some of the pups were.  It went very well.  Our little dog played well with them.  Of course at this point, they are still about her size, but that won't last!

They are great inside. They chew. Make sure there are LOTS and LOTS of indestructible (no squeaker toys, no stuffed toys) around. Get a crate and learn how to use it and when to use it. (It is never a punishment in itself, it is a place of safety and refuge. Once in the crate, nothing bad happens- Not to say you can't make them go in it when you want to kill them. Mine learned to run into it when she did something wrong- like a safe house ).

Ann- That is funny- Bing sounds like the perfect GS.  My last GS -Magnolia (she was a long hair white GS) did NOT like the water, but if I swam out too far, in she would come and "herd" me to shore.

That is one of the things I love about GSDs is that they do herd. Who ever is here at the time is the herd. If some one 'breaks he herd" by going to the bathroom or just leaving the room, she has to go check them out. Going between where they are and the rest of the herd. She HATES it when people are in two or three different rooms. Wears her out. Se also hates it when people leave. Her motto, the Herd MUST stay together.

Is it a German German Shepherd, or an American German Shepherd. The American ones are smaller, though still large. They love to run, so when old enough you can take it with you if you'd like. The needs lots of exercise. They want to learn and work, too. Take it to training classes! All of the ones I have dealt with are eager to please.

It is from German bloodlines.  I know the Americans are slightly smaller but we wanted to buy from a good breeder that was fairly local.   There were 3 females in her litter.  She is the middle sized one.  They are each definitely different sized.  Her dad is a BIG boy and very laid back.  100# at 18 months. (still doesn't compare with your Milo, though!     )   The mom is about 70#.  Both are black & tans.  The pups are still mostly black of course, but paws are tan and getting some nice tan markings around the head and such.  They are about 6 weeks.

My friends GSD's are herders, too. They take them to a place where they get to herd sheep on Saturday mornings.

They were over for a bonfire one evening and brought the dogs. We had a mob of kiddos running around like maniacs though the yard. The dogs spent the evening trying to herd the kids.

Yeah, both of our labs were crate trained, as is our little dog.  Hmmm.  I didn't think about the squeaker toys.  The little dog loooves them.  The labs weren't much of chewers.  We have tiny little tennis balls for the little dog that we will have to get rid of.  For now might be okay for the GS but would soon be too small.  That is okay the little dog like big tennis balls too.  She "skins" them!

When are you getting her? I think 8 weeks is usually the standard, but the longer they stay with the litter the better, she can learn manners from them, especially about biting and mouthing.

Milo will be 6 months on Thursday. I found out one of his brothers weighs 95lbs already. I'm going to try to get him to the vets this week and put him on the scale. He is a good inch to inch and a half taller than his one sister. I want to get pictures of him and my Christmas tree this week. I may go on a photo frenzy soon.

My lab rips the squeakers out of toys. Stuffed toys are no good for her or Milo either.

After my first GS, I learned the hard way. Have LOTS of really hard toys around. Real bones, Busy bones, Kong toys, Big rope bones, are all good. They chew EVERYTHING for the first 6 months. This time was fine. I made sure she knew what she was allowed to chew and what not, (Thank Goodness they learn quick) and there was (still are, actually) ALWAYS options for her to chew. Now she has the toys mostyly in lieu of a security blanket.

My friends dog died from eating the stuffing out of a toy. We just banned them. Not to mention, there is too much fun to be had by the dog spreading that stuffing to every corner of creation.

We will get her this weekend.  I had thought 8 weeks also, but this breeder (and another breeder (been breeding GSD for 40 years)  that she works with) say 6 weeks is fine.  And gives more socializing time in the owner's world.  I believe the pups will be 7 weeks by the weekend, but I am not positive.  I am planning on asking tonight.

Since our labs were not big chewers, we didn't think much about it.  However, we have thrown away several stuffed toys already that the little dog has chewed a hole in and began to pull out the stuffing.  I guess we need to go a different route with her also!

What do you think about the rope chews?  Are they safe enough?

Don't worry Robin, you don't have to run. I mean you are medically cleared to, and you have a treadmill at your house. I bet the weather isn't that bad so you could probably even run outside. You don't have to run though. I was going to live vicariously through you since I am medically unable to run. That's ok though. Stay inside. Don't run. I can easily hide my disappointment. I wish I was getting ready to run a HM in Carlsbad, but I can't. Maybe I can start living vicariously through those people who eat entirely too much food at events and call it a sport.

Sincerely,
Ann

The Beast LOVED them - she Still LOVES them. Get the biggest size you can find. I cut the ends off about an inch from the knot because the beast would eat them then we would see them again, if you get my drift. Don't cut too close or the knot will come undone. They are perfect, especially when they are teething. They are great to play with, too. They get a bit yucky to catch after a bit, though.

We have a couple of the ropes. They are one of the toys that my dogs have not been able to destroy yet, and it's funny to see them have a tug of war with it. Something like that would probably be good for her while she's young and teething. She can chew on it, but it's still got some softness to it.

ceilidh - 2010-12-06 11:10 AM I have not worked out all weekend. I MUST get my run and core in at lunch.

Feel free to send me the boot. Guilt works well, too.

Sincerely,
Ann

OOOOhhhhhhh, THAT was good. (It is gonna have to be on the TM, the weather sucks- 32 (0C for Melindy) for a high and 20 MPH winds).

The Canadian understands your temperature system now. Haha. -15C=6F, 32F=0C, etc.

After all your swimming this weekend, I didn't want to further tax your mind, even though 32 is the easy one!

I am required to think under fatigue. Haha. Imperial system conversion is the least of the taxing being done today...Haha.

We are going to a holiday party where my husband works. It is open to all faculty, staff, and students, and their families. We will eat, the kids will do some activities. They usually have Santa, and a group who does balloon animals/stuff. The kids enjoy it, so we go every year.
