Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good question for me. I am slow because.. I am slow. My fitness is not at a place (yet) where I can do much to speed up. I also think that because I am upping mileage I am self-moderating my pace. I've seen huge improvements, even though small. I do try to speed up when I'm running and I've tried some interval work. Slow and steady, right girls?? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() getting muscular endurance back post-baby makes me slower running, I had been comfy breaking a 10' mile just before my race and subsequent pregnancy and then there's that pesky thing that I'll slow down 'cause I'm worried I'm going too fast for endurance capability I'm pretty sure I need a heart rate monitor now, 'cause my RPE is usually too comfortable---don't know if that makes sense.

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Question of the Day One more running question. How many miles per week do you run? Are you consistent? |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK, I'll answer both since I guess I missed yesterday's. I'm not really slow- my 5K PR is 26:30 or so, and I did a 1/2 marathon in 2:08:3 or so. I run faster when I weigh less (that 5K was about 8 pounds lighter), and when I run more interval/fartleky training runs (i.e., when I actually run faster). I also tend to run as fast during the run of a triathlon, than when I run a running race only. When I did the half marathon I ran the last 5K at probably about my 5K race pace. As for mileage and consistency, it's been something I've been working on. My consistency has historically been...inconsistent... |

I just spit tea out of my nose laughing at this word. Didn't mean to derail the conversation.. I run.. uhh.. whatever Mr Higdon tells me to. Right now my mileage is going UP in prep for Austin. Dunno what I will do after that. ![]() Edited by Mammaren 2011-01-20 3:54 PM |

New user![]() | ![]() I have missed several questions of the day - I enjoy running although I'm not particularly fast - after my 3rd child I've rarely broken 10 min miles. But recently I've been doing intervals on the treadmill and it has improved my speed for short distances quite a bit and my stamina has really improved. Im most consistent with running but probably not consistent enough! |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So sorry about your grandmother, Tracy. I do love the image of her watching over you. I do have a running question. A few years ago I noticed that after a long run, I would sometimes get a really bad headache. Dehydration seemed like the clear answer, but I started being really careful to drink plenty of fluids and would still get them. They went away for a while, but I got one last week after my 6 mile run. I'd only run that far once before, but felt fine after it. Besides dehydration, any ideas else could be causing them? They can really knock me out because I also get achy and nauseous. For running speed, I'm waaaay faster than I was pre-baby. I think carrying all that extra weight then getting back to running with the stroller really strengthened my legs. I try to throw in some intervals during one run a week, and hills for another run. For distance, I also do what the good Mr. Higdon tells me to. Today was my first day back in the pool since the fall. Just spend half an hour taking it easy with breast stroke and the kick board because genius me forgot her goggles! Seven miles are on the schedule for tomorrow -- I've never run this far before! |

Do you run along a busy road? Maybe the car fumes are bothering you as your distance increases. |

Your headache after long runs might be due to low blood sugar. What is your diet like in the hours before you run long? What to you eat and drink while you run? Exercising for longer than an hour requires a little more planning when it comes to nutrition. Your body only has enough stored energy to sustain endurance activities for a little over an hour. After that, you need to be ingesting a little carbohydrate at regular intervals. Ideally, you should be ingesting 30 to 60 grams of carbohydrate per hour of exercise to maintain blood glucose levels. |

Suck it up, buttercup! Get off the computer and get on the trainer! Thanks! I did it. I often need to hear that exact first sentence you wrote!!!! Any time I missed yesterday's workout- I got called to go back into the hospital to evaluate a patient and ended up there until past nine. Then I got more calls (including 5 after midnight- conveniently spaced so I had just gotten back to sleep when the next one came. By the end of the night I was convinced there was a conspiracy), and just finished my rounding for the day. So I'm going to put my scheduled 5 mile run off until tomorrow, and if I get a nap and feel good, I may try biking. But I'm not going to push it. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I went on a super fun bike ride with the ladies this afternoon! It was SUNNY and WARM and I WORE SHORTS and I was TOO HOT!!!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ok. Right. I'm back in the game. I have moved - still lots of boxes everywhere but the time stresses have gone. Went swimming with the tri club last night and sat listening to the guys talk about having to loose a stone to get fit (they are all pencils though.) made me be a bit fed up with being the fattest and the slowest (actually there is one guy heavier than me but he still swims faster!). They are all very tolerant of my though. So, i need to loose 2 stone to get into the BMI normal weight zone so I need help with that. Also, went out on my posh super duper trek 1.2 road bike today. You will see I didn't go far but it was a lot quicker than the mountain bike. But the roads around here are sooo bumpy - my head was shaking so much I couldn't really see the next pot hole/drain to avoid. And I really have no idea what I'm doing with the gears - and every time I adjust my hands on the handlebars I'm a bit wobbly - but I can't wait to get better at it. So, I am a bit enthused st the moment. I will enjoy it while it lasts and wish all of you a lovely rest of the day. Jennifer (ps. I do feel better for getting all that off my chest!) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just looked again at my planned calendar and was stunned to see that I gave mysely TWO weeks between training plans instead of just one. So, um, thinkin' I'll hang 'round the gym a bit this week and try out classes for fun---that's assuming the childcare is available as it was not when we arrived today to attend Pilates class. The girls said a 15' wait which would've made me 20' late to a 1 hour class...and I've lots of housework to do today not to mention the post office, so we headed back out. IF the little girl gets her room picked up and organized we'll head back this afternoon ~4ish (that's her reward, to play at kidsclub). |
