mpdiotte - 2011-01-25 1:10 AM Did 45 min in the pool, gave up after there was 9 people in the lane with 3 wide as two people tried to pass at the same time. Came home and ran for 40 min in Z2. Tomorrow a 1:10 ride on the trainer.

1800yard swim today.  Not motivated today - took a while to get out of bed and going.

Anybody have recomendation on goggles?  I have the cheapies from Dick's and I always know when I hit 700-800 yards.  They start to fog.  Then usually about 1200-1300 I feel the strap slide down and push on the top of my ears.  I have tried adjusting them and spitting in them before hand, not getting them wet before hand all the little tricks and it seems to always be the same.

I think it is time that I look at getting a better pair. Anybody have a suggestion?

. I got my goggles from Dicks as well, they are TYR. And like yours were always fogging up. I bought a bottle of Speedo goggle defogger and it has worked wonders. Just a drop or two let it dry and you're good for a few swims. I can't help with the slipping strap though.

NINE. Wow that sucks. 1:10 on the trainer. How much of that in aero/drops? Hopefully a lot.
I do almost all my trainer rides in areo I only sit up to drink and maybe change the T.V station. I am also taking my 6 years daughter to the pool so she can practise her flip turns. Hopefully it won't be so busy. I love reading the sweat test stuff and might try it tonight bit I read that it should be done at race pace. Is that right. I'm not sure if I can hold my race pace for an hr since I'm just starting my training plan.

Wouldn't worry about pace. If you want to try it then go ahead regardless of pace. I suspect most people will be surprised at how much they sweat at any pace/temperature. Let us know what you find out.

I have always used the Aquasphere Kaimens. I just spit it them and have no problems. I have a feeling that the fogging part may be kind of a person to person thing. I've been using the same pair for the last 2.5-3 years and they don't show any signs of wearing out yet. Trisports.com and amazon probably carry them as well as a million other online places.
A cap over the goggles will help them from coming down onto your ears. I do this for races as well so my goggles don't get ripped right off of my face.

With a swimming background, I started out with Swedes, then realized they cut into your eye socket when someone hits you during a mass start.  I made the switch to Speedo Vanquishers and have not plan to change any time soon.  I've gone through four pair in two years (because I lost them) and will get them again as needed.  I think you need to find one that fits your eye the best though.

I had a breakthrough yesterday.  I was doing my 55 minute trainer ride after going through all of the gears (in aero) and was in my final five minutes of my cool down and started to not feel well.  The next thing I know, I am making a break for the bathroom.  I pushed myself so hard, I had to throw up!  I thrown up following one race before, but never during an indoor trainer session!  I'm so proud of myself.

My goggles always fog up.

Here's a picture of the pool I swim at from last Thursday at 5PM - gorgeous January day in California, about 65 degrees. TWO people in the pool. It's not the world's best facility but I rarely have to split lanes, let alone share with 9 people!!!

Ok I see the picture. You are lucky. I have never had less than 4 in my lane. It really sucks. I'm slow but it totally breaks your rhythm when you are either passing or being passed

For Goggles, I use Speedos.  I tried Irongirl ones and the nose piece is solid and too flat.  It was pressing in the bridge of my nose and killing me.  On the fogging issue, a lady at the pool said to wipe the inside of your goggles with dish soap occasionally.  I haven't tried it, but I don't really have fogging issue either...

Did a 45 minute workout with my coworkers today, although I don't know if you can call it a workout if you don't break a sweat.  We used the tension bands to do a variety of exercises.  Interesting, but not too helpful.  So afterwards, I grabbed someone to run 3 miles on the treadmill with.  Ugh, 30 minutes on that damn thing felt like a torturous lifetime!  Didn't even have a TV to watch.  I think I need new shoes if I am going to go on longer runs.  These don't have too many miles on them, but rubbing my feet wrong.

Nice pool!! I use Aquasphere goggles, the Kayenne model. In fact today, I opened a brand-new pair on my swim! The last several weeks, my goggles had been leaking something terrible. I guess they really do wear out! No leaking today once I opened my new pair! Swam at lunch, maximal power intervals on the bike tonight after work. I too may need a barf bucket!

Another 33 minute run today with strides. Still coughing a bit, but I feel pretty good otherwise.

Goggles...I also use Aqua Sphere. Interesting thing about them though. I have two pair. Once is clear w/clear plastic the other is tinted with grey plastic. The grey ones leak all the time. It seems like the plastic is just a little stiffer in the grey ones. It's a bummer because the tint is really really nice when swimming outside early in the morning.  I've never had either pair fog up though and they are very comfortable.

Over the weekend and yesterday I got my training plan laid out in excel. I started with an excel form someone here on BT gave me and tweaked it just a bit (dates, times, added some features). If I'm going to do all the training I need, I'm the kind that needs it all written down. It's basically the competative plan from "Be Iron Fit". I'll post it (or email it) if anyone wants to give me some feedback on it.

Decent lunchtime run, quick pace to get back for a 1pm meeting.

I buy the cheap goggles at SwimOutlet and go through a couple pairs a year, but with them being a couple bucks each, I dont see it as being a big deal in throwing them out once they start to fail.  I forget what kind my race goggles are, but Ive only used them to race and OWS, so I havent had any fogging issues with them.

I wouldn't mind seeing a copy of that excel document.  I juggle my workouts between BT & a VERY raw spreadsheet I created myself.  Maybe I'll start using yours if I like it .  If you could email it to me that would be great.  I am [email protected]

continuous swim this morning and a 9 mile run. My legs are a bit tight from yesterday's run. Running around the track always messes with my 'inside' foot but I'm staying on top of it.

Nice workouts everybody. Looks like lots of goggle suggestions to be tried.

Here is a link to my excel - see below....

I created it from BT and it is for my IMKY.

It might be a good layout for some.  It is a 2 week base and then 1 week recovery.

Nice training plan! I dumped the BT 20 week plan into excel a while back. Here it is if anyone is interested in a shorter training plan (20 wks rather than 28 I think yours had...or you could just repeat the first four week block multiple times to extend it).

EDIT: Oops, it's too big for BT so let me know if you want me to email it to you. =)

Thanks for sharing all of the different plans that each of you are using. Having seen a ton of these I'll just give you my .02.

Most of the canned plans are usually pretty effective.

There are no 'secret' workouts that one plan is doing that another is not. For that matter there are no 'secrets' period.

Find/buy a plan you like and stick with it. Do not waver or change it drastically. Use it year after year and tweak in just a bit usually to emphasize your weakest sport.

Consistency over time is always the best approach. In my opinion the person that sticks with a plan over a long time will be farther ahead than the person that switches each year thinking that one plan has the 'secret'. None do. Just work.

About the only plans that I have seen that are truly different are the Endurance Nation plans. These are typically very high intensity done over shorter times. They are great for the time crunched person that is willing to suffer mightily. I also think that EN plans are best done with a power meter.

Just my .02. Find something you like and stick with it.

Jamie- you bring up a great point about picking a plan, a course of action, and sticking with it. I posted this on the IM/HIM message board last week and didn't get but a couple of responses.. My plan officially starts next Monday. I have been diligently working all winter on a swim/run maintenance plan- but improving on the bike (with some definitive goals in mind) by following Jorge's winter cycling plan v3.0. I am in week 8 of the plan. It is kicking my butt hard. And, my wattage has greatly improved. I train with a powertap. Jorge's plan is 20 wks. long. My question to you and to the group is this: do I start my plan next Monday as is.. follow it completely to the T or can I follow the swim/run part of it and continue with Jorge's plan and see it through til March then pick up with the bike portion of the plan (by then, the weather might be decent to start riding outside)? My A race is Muncie 70.3 in July. I plan to bump up to the Don Fink Competitive plan this after after using the intermediate plan last year for my HIM that I did at Cedar Point. I had good luck with that but this year, I want to get faster and train much smarter, with purpose.
Thoughts, comments welcome! Thanks!!

I just added a few things and tweaked some stuff to my goals/tastes
