Subject: RE: ChrisM's Mentor Group - CLOSED

I think I've got my running partner back in line, he showed up this a.m. and promised to show up Thursday.  Great un this morning, it's a 4 mile out and back, took the first 2 miles easy, then picked it up on the way back.  time was good for me (slow for others) of 36:50.   I did a 36:19 last week, my goal by the end of June is to go sub 36, which would be sub 9s.  Again, slow for others but an achievement for me.

Speaking of which, I am loosely following BarryP's 3:2:1 program.  More or less    3 slow easy recovery runs (usually 2), 2 medium runs (these are the 4 milers, one of which is tempo), and one long run.  Long is 3X short, medium is 2X short.

Traditionally, I get in the 90-100 mp/month range and get my medium run to a 9:15 pace or so, then get injured, pull a calf or a hammy.  I am right at that spot now.  Ran about 90 last month, would like to run 100 - 110 this month.  So far, knock on wood, so good.....

What do you do on a daily or almost daily or weekly basis to prevent injuries?  Roll?  Stick?  Stretch?  Massage?  I need to do all of these more regularly

Chris, I can't believe that you are as big as you are with all the training that you do. It seems like you would start wasting away!

gator22 - 2011-06-06 12:10 PM You guys/gals are all killing it. Congrats on all the hard training. I sprained my ankle pretty good on a trail on Friday. Hope nothing is broken, but I am definitely on the shelf for a bit.

UGH! So sorry to hear.   Make sure you start PT on that quick before it stiffens up!

Hii everyone!  Been busy being sick, then training thru it and dropping into bed exhausted!  My race is coming fast and I still have all this crap in my lungs making training challenging.  My HR tends to shoot up real fast.

Everyone looks like they are hitting it pretty good!  Good job guys...keep it up.  Will check in again sometime before my race on the 18th

Hope you get better! My ankle is feeling better. I should be able to start riding again next week, running I am not so sure. IT will be a good reason to get my fat butt in the pool!!

Hello all, to those sick or injuried....hurry back!!!

Chris, your answer to your massage/stretch question is I dont do much...I know I have to.  I am tight and very inflexible and I know I should be doing something probably more than anybody on here...

Now for my exciting news.....I got a garmin 310xt and used it today and works great....i even uploaded my workout on here.  So that is nice and secondly, I signed up and paid for the California 70.3 for next March.  I am pretty pumped but a little bit nervous.  I know I have a ton of work to do but I am confident I will do well.

Have a nice rest of the week.   Hopefully, I ll see you on Sunday Chris if you are still racing.

Brent

Laying in bed here in the golapagos listening to the waves crashing up on shore. Today we search for sharks. This trip has been a great confidence booster for my swim. I know know I can easily do a ows without my wetsuit no problem. At least in salt water. . Eating way to much though. They are feeding us well. Chris, I don't do much daily for injury prevention. I stare down my foam roller every now and then but rarely use it. I did for marathon training though, mostly on my calves. I do keep my hips stretched out cause of itbs. The main thing I do for injury prevention though is some strength training. Specifically my hip as that is what caused my itbs but I do full body regardless. Ugh forgot the iPhone posting ignores paragraphs.

COngrats on the 310 and more so on signing up for Oceanside!   It was my first as well in 2007, did it again this year so if you have any questions...  well, I might be able to answer, but might not, LOL.   just don't let 'em tell you the run is "pancake flat."  It's not hilly, but that would be a funny looking pancake    Plenty of time to get ready for it.   Training over the winter can be hard, even here in sunny so cal.  So you may want to think about using Jorge's winter bike training program here.  I modified it to 2X week plus one outside ride (it's 4X / week) and while I didn't go as fast as I'd like, my percentage placing went up dramatically from '07 so I think everyone didn't go as fast as they'd like.

Yes, I'm looking forward to racing Redondo again.  Pic is on my blog, I will be wearing a black Redondo Tri sweatshirt in the a.m., my wife is a volunteer so I have to get there wicked early.  I'll be racing in black de soto shorts and top.

I know, right?  Turns out I just like food.

Even in IM training, when I was doing 40K swim months, 4-500 miles on the bike and 90 miles of running, my "IM weight" was still mid 220s

Ha sometimes I have to entertain myself when I wake up bloody early to keep the peace. I'm on Isabella right now. We have 3 nights here before we head to santa Cruz before heading back to Quito. Was on San cristobal earlier in the trip and on the way over here had a quick stop on floreana. Tomorrow we hike the rim of Sierra negra. Having a blast so far

hoots - 2011-06-03 11:45 PMFinished in up the week with a 7 mile run tonight. Going to look at real estate tomorrow, need to find a way to get to the pool in the morning or after we get home. I am going to try and knock off 60 miles on the bike on Sunday. I had another breakthrough in the pool last night, 600 yards without stopping.
Wow! Congrats... I can do 300... it's getting better all the time.
I was stuck at 100 yards for a year, and once I felt like I was getting a good breath things have been getting better by leaps and bounds. I no longer feel like my shortness of breath is holding me back, more the muscles used when swimming. I am by no means fast, but was able to do 900 yards without stopping last night.

I'm inspired! and that's what this is all about. Thanks for replying and taking some interest. I will get there!!

I signed up for a 10k on the 24th. Ready to take the leap from 5ks. I hope. I ran 4 miles on Tuesday morning and my hip flexors are STILL sore. Oy... plug plug plug..

Good luck to you guys! I am hitting the training pretty hard this weekend. Lots of hill repeats! Taper starts on Monday and vacation to Lake Placid starts next Thursday. I'm pretty psyched.

I had to travel for work last week, so didn't get most of my workouts in. I have to find a way to be more consistent when I am on the road. I made sure to start out this week with a run and a swim today.

Thanks.  That was my wife I high 5'd.  She coordinates the swim exit/run path.  Too bad we didn't meet up. I heard your girlfriend, I wasn't sure who said it.

Race went well, got passed by the 3d place clyde with about 1/3 mile to go (i didn't know he was third, I hadn't seen any other marked clydes), no way I could have caught him.  I thought maybe if he was first I could get on the podium...  but nope, missed it AGAIN by one spot and :45.

My biking currently sucks, so my goal was to run a 17, and I ran 17:01 (without pacing it, it just happened), so very happy with that.  My best run at redondo and my best pace per mile in any tri.

Hey guys, checking in.....  My biking over the weekend Saturday and in the race made me realize I have to get off my a$$ and get on the friggin bike.  So, this morning, against every inch of will in my body, I got up and rode the computrainer for 1:10.  Sooooo glad I did it.

So, for this week, what's the biggest thing holding you back, and what are you going to do about it??  I am going to get up Thursday and do it again on my new schedule.  Then ride long-ish Saturday (this is not so much of an issue)

Actually, for me, food and weight are the biggest thing, I should probably work on that too

2 things....my swim sucks....I am going to Rose Bowl Aquatic Center for some lessons.

secondly, I love FOOD!!!  How I can combat eating bad is doing a food diary (on Livestrong.com) and hold me accountable.    Eventually i hope to over come both these.

This week is a recovery week for me!!

I need to improve my diet, as well. The problem is that my mind thinks after a long run or ride that I can eat whatever I want the rest of the day. I am also on the wagon, no alcohol until Aug. 7th after the HIM. Hopefully, that will help lighten the load I have to race with.

I use the livestrong site to log calories and it has been instrumental.  I weigh and measure all my food.  In the beginning its a pain in the but now its second nature.   I also follow the Zone Diet with the 40/30/30 ratio.  That only changes when cardio is over an hour long.

T minus 3 days to my uphill race.  Leaving fo Lake Placid tomorrow.  I love vacations
