Veteran 282 | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George : Official Thread Feeling really good. Taking a fair amount of info from Phil Maffetone's Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing and applying/hybrid'ng it with Fitzgerald's week-by-week intermediate plan. Recovering well, staying injury free (knock on wood), and feeling like I'm getting the little things dialed in on the bike/swim. Anybody else? |

Feeling good, on target and thoroughly enjoying training. Well, I'm still not a big swim fan, but I'm there three days a week sticking to the plan and seeing clear improvement. I hope everyone else's training is going well. Brad |

I've stayed injury-free since I started this whole Tri gig several years ago..... so to have it hit me now, just before my first 'mother of all distances'.....it's been extremely frustrating. From what I gather online and in my circles...... it's an injury that is temporary.... everyone just keeps saying 'be patient'. With IMSG less than 90 days away, patience is a tough pill to swallow. The one positive is that I have increased my time on the bike, which, after riding the course, may be a blessing in disguise. - That aside, I'm with Brad. I have been enjoying the training - Fortunately we have had record-breaking high Temps here in No. UT (It's not uncommon for highs to be in the mid-teens this time of year - - this year we've stayed in the high 30's). I've been able to do all my bike training over the last couple of months outside. So continued happy-training to everyone. Cody |

Member 28 | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George : Official Thread Traing is on track. The swim is a bit of a struggle, but I'm seeing slight improvements. In the next few weeks, I will be off the bike trainer and doing hill repeats at Morrow Mt. The hill thing is a bit of a challenge in central NC. Hopefully, a little extra volume will help. Here's to staying injury free...Good luck to all! |

Cody Cody, I have to agree with everyone that has been telling you to be patient. In the grand scheme of things, 90 days is a long time. You are so much better off nipping the issue in the butt now so that you're healthy come race day. If you try to push through it now, most likely you'll the issue will persist or it will get worse. Don't forget that you can also maintain/increase your fitness level swimming and biking right now then once you get better, it will help you with your run. |

I battled ITBS after my last race in November. It sucks. I could swim and ride all I wanted, but was stuck at 45 minutes on the run so I just ran more often but shorter distances. Looking back I did not loose much ground on my run. I'm sure you've done all the research but you really need to rehab it aggressively as rest alone will not fix it. After weeks of really focusing on hips, glutes, hamstrings, calves, rolling and certain stretches, I was liberated from my 45 minute ceiling in the beginning of January and have been building distance since. The funny thing about ITBS is I really don't know what specifically got me better because I was doing so much to address it. However, I still roll, still do shuttle drills, still use the band, still do one legged drops, still do certain stretches, and of course, ice. |

Veteran 468 STATESBORO, GA | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George : Official Thread Like 3aims I am not sure what made the change for me. It simply may have been time training. However, one thing I think made a difference with me was incorporating strength training into my workouts. Early in my training I thought it was silly to do leg presses or squats as I spent so much time running/biking. However, when I did start leg workouts my it band tremendously improved. I still get problems at times (mile 15 on a marathon this year). However, it is minor compared to before and not a show stopper. I have read, I think in Joe Friels book, a IT band issue is due to a weak butt. I would not start the strength training until the PT clears you. Also, I realize this worked for me and may not for everyone. I also always stretch at mile 2 on training runs and stretch like crazy pre race. I tried the custom orthotics to no avail. Good luck it is a major pain in the rear or side of the leg! |

I only wish I could do any tri before IMSG, let alone a HIM. There's just nothing on the schedule in the early spring in these parts. I don't want to travel so it'll just be training and some running races for me. Brad |

Regular 112 Logan, Utah | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George : Official Thread It's been good to read everyone's feedback on this ITBS. Keeps me positive, so thank you. As far as prep HIM's..... I won't even be able to squeeze in an Oly or Sprint let alone a HIM. I'll probably just do a couple of race simulation workouts. |

Veteran 490 Dallas | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George : Official Thread I am doing the Memorial Hermann 70.3 Texas with my buddy Lance Armstrong. It is going to be circus with him racing. It's 5 weeks out from IMSG which is a bit too close if I had a choice, but I will use that week leading up to the race as a recovery week. Two more heavy weeks after that. Then taper bliss. |

Member 18 | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George : Official Thread It's always cool to see the range of training plans. I'll be doing an Oly at Lake Havasu in March which will help clear out the cobwebs. With work being so intense, I'm getting in about 5-6 hours a week, not nearly as much as I should be, but I have a reasonable base to work from and a good set of training partners. The swim feels good, and here in Northern Arizona I'll have a lot of chances to get used to Sand Hollow water temps when the ice finally clears. For the bike I'm doing hour repeats of the 64 to 85 km course on the computrainer, which includes Eagle Ranch, the Wall and Veyo hill plus the nasty false flats people talked about earlier. Those workouts will get longer, but I'm trying to be gentle on a problematic knee. The run is already planned as a walk/run, if I can make the bike cut off, I think I'll be able to finish in under 17. That's pretty much my only goal for this (my first) Ironman. Always nice for to get on a visual on these much talked about hills. That's a nifty little kick. From that picture and the second one, it looks like it's pretty short and ends just a bit around that corner. Is that correct? |

Thanks for the pictures! Always nice for to get on a visual on these much talked about hills. That's a nifty little kick. From that picture and the second one, it looks like it's pretty short and ends just a bit around that corner. Is that correct? Yep, its short-ish and steep. A mistake a lot of folks make on it is use the approach to as a launch pad-they bgo flying up the bottom then try to drop gears super fast and go spinning into the stratosphere when their chain drops. Everyone fixates on 'the wall' but personally this one is nastier since there is a nice flat, fast approach the it goes straight up. Flipside is a nice downhill which for me gives just enough recovery before hitting Veyo, since I don't care for tons of downhill when I'm doing a lot of climbing. Veyo is longer but it gradually gets steeper with the little bit before the crest being steep. It is extremely humbling to lap the BOP on these climbs since these folks are either walking or weaving-and many have little hope of making the cut off. |
