Hey Cyndi-

could you do us all a favor and explain the transition prossess. i see its a saturday bike check in like all ironman events but there's no changine tents or gear bags. so we have bike check in on saturday and on sunday morning we can fill up tires and put nutrition on our bikes etc.etc.etc

my questiuon for you i guess is do we take all of our running stuff into transition on sunday too? i know transition always gets crowded no matter how big the event is, so do you get enough room for a small bag/towel or whatever?

Hi Nick,

This is a single transition race (T1 and T2 are the same spot). On Sunday we drop off the all of our gear (i.e. bike shoes, helmets, fuel, and all running gear) and pump tires. Your gear bag, pump and any extras then need to be put outside transition. Amy and I dump our gear bags just on the other side of the transition fence.

You'll have a small area under your bike for a small towel, that's about all. The space is basically the width of your pedals. If you're lucky enough to get an end spot (like I did the first year I did the race), you will have a little extra room. Plan for a very tight living area that day. :-)

Nice to be able to read and get some information regarding the race. Three of us are coming from Ontario to do Racine, should be a great time. We've done Muncie and Benton Harbour, hopefully Racine is as well run as they are.

Has anyone else done the other two races, how do the run/bike routes compare?

thanks

Did they change the bike check in time from last year?  For some reason I remember it being open until 8pm or something.  This year it closes at 5pm.  My wife works until 1pm on Saturday and we were planning to head up around 2pm from Chicago.  Still gonna leave me an hour or two but I don't remember it being that tight last year.

THe last 2 years were VERY hot.  No idea what to tell you about wind other than generally in this part of the US around Lake Michigan, this time of year winds are out of the west or southwest and will pick up as the day progresses.  In 2010 a nasty Tstorm blew through that kicked winds up very high for a bit.  But storm left as fast as it came in.  It didnt break the heat ither, which really sucked!!!  Last year I dont recall.  Developed what was later determined to be a blood clot on the bike, was more focused on finishing than wind speed and direction.

Good luck on first HIM

I think you are right, last year packet pick up was open later.  Coming up from the city you will hit some construction in Kenosha starting about hwy 165 (outlet mall) and North into Racine so be prepare, down to 2 lanes.

Hi, the Recon ride is tomorrow.  Meet at 7 AM, wheels out at 7:30, Barker Street at Lake Michigan parking lot-same transition site as the race.

It looks like 40+ people will be there so lots of people to ride with!

Quick question:  Do people typically put on the sunscreen before or after the swim?  I was thinking of putting it on after, but have one of those spray-type screens and don't want to be out of etiquette.

good morning Turner100. How was the ride this am? I keep reading about how brutal the road conditions are for the first 5 miles or so. did you find that to be the case today? Thanks for your insights. -pat

The first 5 miles are really not that bad, not real smooth but flat. At around mile 25 you hit a 2 mile mogul field... that is nasty!

Last year they had vols doing sunscreen at T1, right after wetsuit strippers. There's not much shade at all on bike or run, so it's a must. I have small spray too, as long as u don't spray someone else it should be cool. I would def reapply something before bike

If you're wearing a wet suit, you have to put it on after. The sunscreen could damage the suit. There are sunscreen applier people by the wetsuit strippers. They can apply it for you before you head in to T1.

Hi, the ride was great- got to meet Amy & Cyndi.  They had lots of great advice (Thanks Again!)

Yes, there are some bumps in in the first 4 miles, but it gets better. I guess I'm used to riding on Wisconsin roads. My only problem was after the water stop at mile 38, I started riding with a different group and ended up riding 72 miles instead of 56 Frown.  I'm glad that I did the recon ride, so I have an idea of where I'm going. I will drive the course the Saturday before as a refresher. Having said that, this is a fast course with not too many hills.

Afterwards, I went for a swim in Lake Michigan and it was cold!!! (maybe low 60's) I had trouble keeping my face in the water, although after a 1/2 hour, it did get a little bit better. I'm planning on getting in the water at least 30 minutes before my swim to acclimate. I really hope it warms up a little bit.

All in all, a good day!

It was great to meet everyone today! Looking forward to race day and hoping that the water heats up just a couple of degrees!

See everyone very soon!!!

Somehow didn't meet/recognize the majority of the group at the ride this morning. Though I deduce from Turner100's post that he was the guy that separated from our group at the aid station.  I hope you finally found some Advil.   Road conditions were rougher than I had hoped.  The pavement break every 50 ft was much more annoying at mile 54 than it was at mile 2.

The lake was barely 60 degrees, if it was even that warm.  Hands were stinging, and feet were numb for the 40 minutes we were out there.  The only benefit being I was able to walk across the lava hot sand, and not be aware that the soles of my feet were melting off.

Great ride today, the longest I've been on.  Going to have to adjust my goal time downward by 30 minutes.

Hi Bsantelik, we should wear name tags with BT'ers on it!  lol, We'll have to plan a meet & greet on Saturday before the race.  I finally did get that advil, and a large Jamocha shake from Arbys- I think that the shake was better Smile.  If the lake stays that cold, I am going to have to alternate between breast stroke and freestyle so my face doesn't go completely numb!

Nick, it was great to meet you too, I didn't connect you right away with your posts. It sounds like your going to kill it on the bike.

Easy day for me today, swim & aqua run. (in a nice outdoor swimming pool)

2 Weeks to Go!

Wow, I haven't been here in a long time.  I tried to catch up with all of the chatter and helpful hints.  For those of you who are worried about the water temp, consider a neoprene swim cap, fits under race issued color coded swim cap and yes it is legal (maybe someone already mentioned this).  I wore it last year with a long sleeved wetsuit.  The water felt very cold where I could feel it (hands and feet) but overall I felt like my core body temp stayed reasonable, and I am one of those people who is ALWAYS cold.

Can't believe this is so close.  This year I got in more 13 mile runs than the other years, and much less long bikes.  Since the bike is my weak link, I'm a little concerned.  Good news is I replaced my seat this year so even if I am slow, at least my bottom will be comfy!!

Thanks.  Wetsuit strippers?!  I actually thought they only had those at full distance ironman events.  How does that work?  Do you just run into T1, sit down, and they rip it off you?  lol.
